The Demon Queen's Contract
Chapter 38 - 38: Hiding in a bush

As the evening wore on and the palace began to quiet, I found myself restless. The events of the day had left me with a mix of emotions that I needed to sort through, and the confines of my chambers felt stifling. I decided a walk in the garden might help clear my mind.

"I need some fresh air," I told Anara, who was tidying up the room. "I'm going to take a walk in the garden."

"Of course, Queen Elara," she said, her tone filled with concern. "Shall I accompany you?"

"No, that's all right," I replied. "But could you please arrange for a couple of guards to join me? Just for safety."

"Certainly," she said, nodding. She left the room to fetch the guards, and I took a moment to wrap a shawl around my shoulders. The cool night air would be refreshing after the warmth of the palace.

A few minutes later, Anara returned with two guards—Orin and Lira, the same guards who had escorted me after the attack. They bowed respectfully as they approached.

"Queen Elara, we are ready to accompany you," Orin said, his voice steady and reassuring.

"Thank you," I said, offering a small smile. "Let's go."

We made our way through the dimly lit corridors, the soft glow of lanterns guiding our path. As we stepped outside, the cool night air enveloped me, carrying the sweet scent of blooming flowers. The garden looked absolutely beautiful under the moonlight, each leaf and petal bathed in a silvery glow.

We walked slowly along the winding paths, the guards maintaining a respectful distance. The quiet of the night was soothing, and I found myself relaxing for the first time all day. The soft rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of crickets created a peaceful symphony that helped to ease my troubled mind.

As we rounded a corner, I noticed a movement in the bushes. Squinting, I saw a familiar figure crouched behind a large rose bush, her face partially obscured by the leaves. It took me a moment to recognize Seraphina, her dark hair and sharp eyes giving her away.

I couldn't help but chuckle softly at the sight. Seraphina, the fierce and imposing commander, was attempting to hide in the bushes with an expression of intense concentration on her face. Her hiding place was laughably ineffective, and the juxtaposition of her serious demeanor and her ridiculous position was too amusing.

"Seraphina," I called out softly, unable to keep the amusement from my voice. "What are you doing?"

She looked up, startled, her face flushing slightly as she realized she had been caught. Straightening up, she stepped out from behind the bush, trying to regain her composure.

"Elara," she said, her voice calm but tinged with embarrassment. "I was just... keeping an eye on you."

"I can see that," I replied, still smiling. "But hiding in a bush? Really?"

She sighed, her shoulders relaxing slightly. "I didn't want to intrude on your walk, but I wanted to ensure your safety."

I walked over to her, the moonlight casting a soft glow on her face. "I appreciate your concern, but you don't need to hide," I said gently. "If you want to walk with me, just say so."

Seraphina looked at me for a moment, her eyes searching mine. Then she nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "All right," she said softly. "I'll walk with you."

We continued our stroll through the garden, side by side. The guards followed at a respectful distance, giving us the semblance of privacy. As we walked, the tension between us seemed to melt away, replaced by a comfortable silence.

"Thank you for today," I said after a while, breaking the silence. "I know it must have been difficult for you to stay so close all day."

"It was my duty," she replied, her tone serious. "But it wasn't as difficult as you might think."

I glanced at her, curious. "Why is that?"

She hesitated for a moment, then looked at me with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. "Because I care about you, Elara. More than I probably should."

The sincerity in her voice took me by surprise. For so long, Seraphina had been distant, her emotions carefully guarded. Hearing her admit her feelings was both startling and heartwarming.

"I care about you too, Seraphina," I said softly. "And I trust you."

She reached out and gently took my hand, her touch sending a warm shiver through me. "I'll always be here for you," she said, her voice filled with conviction. "No matter what."

We walked in silence for a while longer, our hands intertwined. The peacefulness of the garden and the warmth of Seraphina's hand made me feel safe, a stark contrast to the fear and uncertainty of the previous night.

Eventually, we made our way back to our chambers. The guards resumed their posts outside, and Seraphina and I stepped inside. The room felt warm and inviting, a safe haven from the worries of the world.

"Would you like to stay with me tonight? If you don't have a mission " I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. The vulnerability in my question was palpable, but I needed her presence more than ever.

She looked at me, her eyes softening. "Yes," she said simply. "I'd like that."

We moved to the bed, and I slipped under the covers, feeling the comfort of the soft sheets. Seraphina joined me, lying beside me, her warmth a soothing balm to my weary soul.

For a moment, we lay there in silence, the only sound the gentle rustle of the sheets. Then Seraphina turned towards me, her eyes searching mine. "Elara," she said softly, "I want you to know that you're not alone."

Her words were a promise, and I felt a surge of emotion well up inside me. "Thank you," I whispered, my voice trembling slightly. "I need you."

She leaned in closer, her breath warm against my skin. "I'm here," she murmured, her lips brushing against mine in a tender kiss.

The kiss deepened, a connection forming between us that went beyond words. It was a kiss filled with promise, with trust, and with a burgeoning love that neither of us had fully acknowledged until now.

When we finally pulled away, we were both breathless. Seraphina looked at me with a tenderness that made my heart ache. "Rest now," she said softly. "I'll be here when you wake."

I nodded, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. As I closed my eyes, I felt her arms wrap around me, holding me close. The warmth of her embrace and the steady rhythm of her breathing lulled me into a deep, restful sleep.

For the first time in a long while, I felt truly safe. With Seraphina by my side, I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, we would face them together. And as I drifted off to sleep, I felt a sense of hope and contentment that I hadn't felt in years.

The night passed peacefully, the shadows of fear and uncertainty kept at bay by the strength of our newfound connection. Am I falling in love, defenitly not.
