Chapter 94: Demons are as boisterous as they are dramatic
"Good morning,"
The first thing that greeted me as I blinked my bleary eyes open was Natha’s dazzling smile. The second thing was the low, gentle whisper of good morning. And the third was a slow, tender, sweet kiss upon my lips.
Indeed. What a good morning it was, even though it was raining outside.
When Natha parted his lips, he only used the few seconds after that to gaze into my confused—but delighted—eyes at this display of tenderness before stroking my cheek and giving me another beautiful smile. As I blinked in a mind-blinding wondrous, he chuckled and went back to kiss me again.
I was confused, but I wasn’t complaining.
I felt like we spent that morning just kissing for a long time, until I felt the coldness of the room and shivered. Natha let my lips go then, and kissed my cheek before wordlessly tucking me back inside the blanket and walking to the steaming tray on the table—like always.
As I waited for him, I wondered about the fact that I had never felt uncomfortable from Natha’s cold temperature, even though I’d shivered and reacted to cold weather. Was it magic? Or was it because it was someone I liked?
Who knew? But I knew that Natha was in a really good mood this morning. And I knew why...probably.
Yeah...my body had been wiped clean and free of any slimy substance, and with good sleep, it almost felt like nothing happened. But this refreshed mind, of course, refused to forget. How could it, when it was also another first for me?
As Natha came back and put the steaming cup in my palm, my gaze fell upon his fingers and I blushed slightly knowing where they were last night.
Where they were and what they had done to me.
"You’re beyond adorable," he chuckled softly and pressed his lips right on my burning cheek.
What was that even mean? I hid my face behind the cup, and he laughed harder, kissing my forehead now, gently, making my heart flutter.
Damn Demon Lord of Greed—I bet he liked stealing and possessing people’s hearts too!
Did it feel that good last night? I mean...it was for me, but I thought he would feel unsatisfied since we didn’t go all the way. And yet, this good mood and the bright expression on his face persisted all morning.
Natha had always been affectionate, but he was even more so today. He didn’t even read his papers during breakfast, and kept his gaze on me all the time, putting food on my plate as usual, telling me to eat slowly, and playing with my hair as I chewed.
I swore the servants even had their eyes widened and their lips parted all morning. Perhaps because they never saw Natha being this bright and smiley. To be fair, he usually only did that in the confine of our bedroom, or if there was no one in the vicinity. As the Lord, Natha always maintained a dignified, cold face. Even when he smiled, he did it subtly.
So it was probably something rare for the others.
It was quite embarrassing, honestly. It was even more embarrassing when he kissed me in front of the door; slow and tender, and long. So long I shifted from melting in his embrace to flustering to gasping for air. And right after I got some air, he went back to kiss me again, to the point that the guards and servants lowered their eyes in fluster.
"N-Natha..." I put my fingers on his lips after I pulled back for another batch of air, panting as if I was just getting back from a hike. If he kissed me again, I felt like I would either collapse from embarrassment or oxygen deprivation.
In turn, he kissed the fingers I put on his lips and rubbed my wrist. "I don’t really want to send you back..."
How unfair! What should I do if you said that with such a forlorn gaze, my Lord?! I pressed my lips as he continued to kiss my fingers and palm, feeling my resolve start to waver.
It might be, if not for the sudden shocked exclaim from the hallway.
"Y-Young Master is g-going back?!"
I almost jumped in startle, and turned my head to see Dhuarta, Lesta, and Caba in the hall in front of the Lord’s door. Dhuarta was the one who shouted with a surprised voice.
"W-when?" she asked.
Still blinking in surprise myself, I answered. "Um...today?"
She gasped, loudly, and clasped her cheek with both hands. "No!"
What...with this reaction? No? I couldn’t get back? What?
"I haven’t finished gathering the snacks I promised you!"
...Oh.
"Umm...you can just give it to me next—"
"My Lord! When will you send Young Master back?" she shifted her gaze toward Natha, who was still holding me. But she just continued to speak without even waiting for a reply. "Don’t send him before I come back, okay?"
Did this demon just order her Lord around? I watched in confusion and amusement as she immediately bolted from the hall without even waiting for a response from either Natha or myself.
And yet, before I had leeway to muse about that, another shocked voice came to my attention. This time, it was quieter, rather sad and anxious too.
"I...is it because of me?" the bald demon wobbled forward like a zombie with a sad face. Because of that, I instinctively flinched and stepped back, even though Natha’s hand was still on my waist.
My reaction, in turn, made Caba even more shocked and saddened. He even went down to his knees with big, glazed eyes. "Are...if you feel uncomfortable, I won’t appear in front of you again, Young Master!" now he even shouted in a freaking hallway. "I...I can leave the Castle too if you—"
"Stop!" I stomped my feet and shouted in flusters. I couldn’t take this anymore! "Why are you people being so dramatic?!"
Whether it was the Lord or his vassals—why were they being like this? It wasn’t like I went to a faraway land? I was sure Natha would pick me up again on the weekend?
I started to open my mouth again, but then paused when I saw their face. Be it Caba or Lesta or the guards and servants who happened to be there, they were all looking at me with a stunned expression. Caba, who was kneeling before was on his butt now, as if someone had pushed him, and Lesta was stepping back in a defensive stance.
And so were the guards, who had their shields upfront.
It got me blinking in confusion. What? Why...was it because I was yelling?
I pressed my lips and felt Natha’s cold hand stroking my head. "It’s okay, they’re just surprised," I looked at him, and he was smiling—somehow rather proudly. "Although maybe less stomping next time. The wind pressure is quite...mm..."
What wind pressure? I tilted my head and looked at Natha inquisitively, but the Demon Lord just smiling charmingly in response, so I swallowed my question and shifted my attention back to the demon on the floor.
Now that I looked at him again, he looked rather pitiful. With that position and his pledge earlier, the ’wolf’ looked rather like a drenched puppy, even though he had no...fur. So I sighed and stepped closer.
"Uhh...I mean...no, it’s not because of you, okay?" I stopped in front of him, who looked at me like he was in a daze. "I just have things to do back in the Lair."
"Re...really?" he replied in a mix of bewilderment and uneasiness, but also relief.
Looking at his expression, this scary-looking demon didn’t look fierce anymore. He looked more and more like a pitiful, overly loyal pet—like the big pitbull my grandpa used to own—and I couldn’t help but rising my hand. Since he was quite big, even in his position, I didn’t need to bend to put my hand on the demon’s head.
"Yeah," I stroked the hairless surface. "So stop being like this, okay?"
Because shouldn’t it be me that flinched and fear him? Why did it become reversed like this?
The bald head nodded obediently while answering. "Y-yes, Young Master."
"Mm," I tapped his head lightly with a smile. "Good, good..."
And then, not a second later, my arm was getting snatched off the demon and my body got pulled back by a cold hand. "You’re touching other people in front of me, now?"
With a gasp, Caba, who was already getting calmer, suddenly slammed—and I really meant slammed, with a loud blasting sound—his head to the floor. "My...my apologies, Your Lordship!" he was back to shouting again. "I was being insolent! Please punish me!"
Goddamnit! Didn’t I tell them to stop being dramatic?!
I groaned and tapped on the hand grabbing my waist. "Natha...Natha!"
The silver eyes, which had been narrowed in a bit of disdain, turned soft as he looked at me. "Mm?"
"Sense my thought," I told him, and then added at his surprised expression. "I’ll allow it for a bit."
The silver eyes blinked for a bit, before turning deeper, and I thought of what I wanted to convey to him; that I’m just curious about his head since I never touched a bald head before.
I didn’t know how much he could read, but it should at least be clear enough with two keywords;
—curiosity, bald head
Pfft—he stifled a laugh suddenly, so I guessed it worked. He even hide his laughing face on my shoulder, shaking for a bit before finally taking hold of himself and excusing the poor vassal on the floor. "Ahem, alright, you can get up now, Caba."
"B-by your command!" the bald demon raised his head in confusion, which only made him look even funnier. I could feel Natha wanting to laugh again and jab his ribs with my elbow.
"Phew," I let out an exasperated breath, but soon had to sigh again. "Stop laughing Lesta."
"I’m...I’m sorry...pfft," like his Lord, Lesta bit his lips to stifle his laugh before making a show of courtesy toward me. "Well, it seems like our lesson need to be postponed, Young Master."
Ah well, at least this one didn’t act so dramatic.
