Chapter 64: The more charming a demon’s smile, the more danger it contains

Demons worked hard—did you know this saying? It wasn’t just that.

Demon Lord worked swiftly.

I had no idea how much money it would need to construct a teleportation array wide enough to contain the whole material plus workers to build a permanent teleportation portal—and at this point, I was too scared to ask. He could just use carriages to bring all of those materials and workers, but no—he had to use the expensive massive teleportation array.

Looking at the golems and demon supervisors taking up all the materials to the highest floor, I was tempted to ask Zia how rich Natha actually was. But before I could utter anything, the succubus already made a comment first while hovering above my shoulder.

"That cousin of mine never spends money on anything, but look at what he does after you come," she muttered while leaning on my shoulder, watching the train of materials passing by. "Feels like he saves all of his wealth just for you, huh?"

She giggled while nudging me, for sure enjoying the red creeping in my ears. Well, what could I do—her words remind me of Natha’s statement that morning, about how his wealth was supposed to be used for his beloved.

"Would the construction take long?" I asked no one in particular, just wondering on my own. But all the golems and the demon supervisors stopped walking and turned toward me.

It was good that I was leaning against a railing or I might jump from the surprise—how undignified would that look? The one who really jumped in fright was Jade, who also immediately cussed the group with its chirping.

Thank God they didn’t know any chirp language.

"It would take a while, Young Master, a few days at the very least," one of the demons answered me politely. "We’ll make sure not to disturb you too much."

"Oh, don’t worry about it," I replied quickly, shaking my head and hand for added measure. Why were Natha’s subordinates always overly polite? "Oh, but can I watch?"

It was kind of intriguing, this whole making of a magic device thing. I knew I probably wouldn’t understand most of it, but wouldn’t it be cool nonetheless?

"Eh, why? Wouldn’t it be boring?" Zia tilted her head.

"I never saw a magic engineering assembly before," I replied with a shrug. Well, for me that came from a world devoid of magic, everything involving the use of mana would be brand new and interesting. "Can I?" I asked the supervisor again, who seemed to be quite taken aback.

But he answered immediately with a slight bow. "O-of course,"

Since I received permission, I followed them to the highest floor. Zia was trailing me despite saying it was boring earlier, giving me an explanation about the materials that she figured out. She also gave me a translation of what the workers were saying to each other since they were talking in demonese.

So I at least knew where they would put the device, and how much power would be needed for each activation. I saw chest upon chest of mana stones and magic conductor ingots being laid on the floor, and taking a peek at the blueprint of the portal device itself.

Yep, I didn’t get it.

But it was fun just watching these people work. It was nice seeing activities in this quiet tower after living here for a few months, and hearing another topic aside from which room hadn’t been cleaned or what to cook for the Young Master tonight.

Well, at least it was fun until I realized they were being very conscious of my presence. They kept glancing at me, and when their eyes met mine, they would fumble nervously.

"Well, I mean...you are their boss’s bride, aren’t you?" Zia whispered to me, explaining their behavior. "They’d be nervous too if Lord Cousin is here."

Uh...well, what could I do about that?

Sighing in disappointment, I decided to ditch the engineering observation that day. It would be bad if the work efficiency went down because they were too nervous to work properly, so I just had to be satisfied with the final product later.

But since I was already on the highest floor anyway, I decided to just climb higher to visit Jade’s relatives. The little bird chirped energetically with every step I took toward the rooftop, and once I stepped into the roof, it swooshed up, joining the swirling rainbow.

Ah...why did I never visit this place again, I wonder? It was as beautiful as I remembered. The flurry of rainbows beneath the cotton candy cloud. It looked surreal even after seeing it once before.

When Jade chirped loudly to announce our arrival, the elemental birds broke their swirling formation to swoop down and circle me. Just like before, the ones who came closest to me were the green-colored birds, landing around me elegantly unlike the toddler Jade.

I sat down in the middle of the rooftop, watching the birds going down one by one and flocking around me. Jade landed above my head to avoid getting squashed as the birds nuzzled me everywhere.

It was scary at first, being surrounded by so many bird-shaped creatures. But perhaps because I had a connection with Jade, I could understand them somewhat. And since I knew none of them had any bad intentions toward me, it was easy letting them come closer to give a greeting.

I was contemplating how to ask for their help regarding my weapon training when some of the birds flapped their wings and flew away. There was only one possible reason for that though, so I just continued to stroke the birds until I felt a weight on my back and a soft peck on my cheek.

"Having fun?"

I leaned back to a solid chest and looked up with a smile. Mm...Natha with a violet sky as the background was indeed the best. The silver eyes curled at my smile and he leaned down to plant another kiss on my lips.

"Oh..." I couldn’t help but exclaim softly after. When Natha tilted his head inquisitively, I added with a laugh. "The last time we were here...you kissed me through your hand,"

I took his hand that was circling my waist and fiddled with his fingers. That wasn’t all though—I finally remembered why I never visited this place again.

Aside from this heart-thumping event, it was also the moment I got distressed by the fact that he knew I was thinking about someone else when I was with him. So subconsciously, I always avoided this place.

But since the source of the stress had been more or less quelled, I had no problem with coming up here anymore. And now, it felt like we were reenacting that indirect kiss—only without a barrier now.

He smiled widely and kissed me again, harder, almost pulling me flat on top of him as we toppled down with a laugh on the rooftop floor. The birds were scattering and Jade was chirping madly in protest, but it just made me laugh even more.

"You’re in a good mood," Natha ruffled my hair before pulling me up neatly again. "Is something good happening?"

Hmm...I wonder?

It wasn’t like I was particularly happy or anything. Maybe because I found out nothing much had deviated from the novel. Or maybe because knowing the portal construction was in progress meant that I would be able to stay with Natha soon.

Or maybe just these beautiful elemental birds and beautiful sky and beautiful Demon Lord in front of me.

I wonder which one of these had Natha caught in his thought-reading ability, but he smiled wonderfully and leaned down to kiss me again, gently this time. Soft and long and lazy, as if we have all the time in the world.

Wow—this is bad. I didn’t know whether I would like to converse with him or kiss him more.

But I reckoned Jade would continue to chirp in annoyance if we didn’t stop so I parted my lips with a laugh in the end. "Were you coming to supervise the construction?"

He started to comb my hair which he ruffled earlier while answering with a hum. "I was just checking if everything got sent correctly," he said. "But that’s not my main reason for coming here,"

"Oh?"

Tucking stray hairs behind my ear, he leaned down to whisper although there was no one there but us—well, if you disregarded the birds. "I come to kidnap you."

...huh?

"Again?" I tilted my head, and he laughed at that.

"Right—I already kidnapped you once," he said. Although it was also done with my full consent, so...could it really be called kidnapping?

"Where to?" I asked matter-of-factly. Was there another festival somewhere?

The silver eyes curled then, although for some reason it felt more mischievous than warm. He stroked my hair, like a parent that wanted to tell their child something the child might not like. Between his charm and the hidden dread, I could only blink dumbly at him.

"Sweetheart," he even used his most charming voice, the gentle and soothing one. "How would you like to try visiting the Lord Castle?"

Suddenly?!
