Chapter 606: We all have our own way to fight
"And then, and then, Papa said--go wild!" Jade stood up on the bed and pointed at the empty air, making a haughty expression with my childhood face.
I...wasn’t doing that much, right? Leaning down, I whispered to my giggling baby that no, his Papa wasn’t that dramatic of a person...surely.
"Oh--good job, sweetheart." Natha clapped while laughing softly, and I couldn’t decide if he did it for Jade’s performance or if he really thought I was doing a good job.
"But there’s no yummy things, so Jade get bored and fall asleep," the little boy ended his theatrics by falling toward Natha’s open arms. "Papa give the only yummy stone for magician girl."
Natha chuckled and patted the sulky green head. "It’s just a human realm’s stone anyway," he scoffed. "I’ll give you lots of better quality ones tomorrow."
"Really?" Jade raised his head with a pair of greedy, sparkling eyes. "Promise?"
"Mm," Natha nodded and Jade hugged him, swaying and giggling on our nightmare’s lap.
You were acting cute so Natha would give you the stones, weren’t you? What a sly kid.
But I looked at Natha cautiously. While I was pretty confident during the auction, I wasn’t actually sure whether spending that much money in one night was okay. "Umm...Nat--"
"I received the expense report," he beat me to it as if knowing what I was thinking. No--even without looking into my head, he always knew what I was thinking. Well, almost always. "You used it well."
I perked up. "Yeah?"
"Yeah," he raised Jade’s hand and pulled up the boy’s thumb. "Good job."
"Good job, Papa!" Jade giggled and added another thumbs himself.
"Everything is useful for this mission of yours, so it’s all good," Natha added.
I wondered when the report appeared--did the bank immediately give the breakdown that morning after Heraz confirmed it? Oh, I hadn’t heard anything from him since then, if I thought about it. But then again, he had to investigate a noble family, so I guessed it would take time.
Meanwhile, my husband was not without criticism.
"It’ll be even better if you buy more things for yourself, even just for fun," he said.
"Hmm...but nothing really caught my eye," I shrugged, looking around the room while swaying the sleepy baby in my arms. "It’s hard to find something nice when you’re constantly showering me with nice things."
Really; be it simple things like food and bed, clothes, and fine stuff like jewelry...I had them abundantly in this place. Hell--everything Arta packed for me, sitting inside my storage ring, was still better than anything I found there. There was a huge case of jewels in Natha’s collection room, and even then...nothing would be able to beat the jewelry created by the drows, so...
"Didn’t feel like wasting money for things I don’t actually like," I shrugged.
"Is that so?" Natha curled his lips. He didn’t say much, but I could see he was pleased and proud of himself. "I guess we have to go to more auctions here once you’re back."
"Sure," I laughed and clasped my mouth right after because Shwa was flinching at the loud voice. Patting my baby back to his drowsiness, I continued in a softer voice. "Oh, but I’m glad I got the statuette."
I had shown the statuette and the bead to Natha before the story about the auction commenced. He did say he could feel the faint power of the Goddess, so I guessed other humans could also.
At the mention of the statuette, Natha narrowed his eyes slightly and muttered in his low, calculating way. "Perhaps I should send more people to auctions on that side, just in case."
"Maybe, but I’d rather Tsalinade found them first," I pursed my lips. "Thinking about giving those people money annoyed me."
A hundred million was rather ordinary compared to the half-billion we had to take out for the relic, but still, the item cost nothing for the plunderer, so even one gold felt too much. Granted, the previous owner probably bought it from the principality or that accursed empire, but I didn’t care about the technicality of thieves.
"Well, I agree," he stroked the knot unconsciously formed between my brows, smoothening out my anger. "So, how’s the journey?"
I flinched slightly before deflated. "Ugh..."
"Papa don’t like it!" Jade giggled, clasping his mouth right after while checking on Shwa. After making sure the baby wasn’t startled, he continued his report. "Papa said...umm...ah! Adventure is overrated!"
Natha raised his brow and laughed softly. "What happened?"
"Inn bed too rough, food too bland, Papa can’t dip dip in hot water..." Jade listed out the grievance I mumbled secretly before sleeping, airing out my secret whining session.
Natha looked at me pitifully and stroked my head while letting out a sigh. "My poor sweetheart..."
"Ugh..." I slapped his hand lightly and hissed. "It’s your fault that I become too accustomed to nice things!"
"My mistake," he gave me a fake apologetic smile and unsincere bow. "I shall keep doing it."
I couldn’t help but laugh at that. Well, it wasn’t like I hated it. If it wasn’t because of that damn Sanctuary summon, I wouldn’t have to go through this whole adventuring anyway.
So, wouldn’t it be better to get used to comfort, instead?
"Also, Papa and Jade miss Shwa..."
Damn...way to dampen the mood, boy.
Natha tilted his head and looked at Jade with an arched brow. "Only Shwa?"
"...maybe Natha too," the little boy mumbled while fiddling with his fingers, looking away as if avoiding Natha even though he was comfortably sitting on Natha’s lap.
Pfft--I held back my laughter to not wake up Shwa, who finally fell asleep, and leaned forward to whisper to my husband. "Definitely Natha too."
"I’m glad," he smiled and caught my lips on a kiss--just a brief and chaste one, because an awake Jade was literally between us.
I carefully put Shwa in the small bed we placed on top of our bed and put on the protective dome attached to it--not only to prevent bugs from coming but also noises. "Now we can speak freely. "
And the still energetic little boy immediately took advantage of it. "Oh, oh--Ignis tell Jade that Papa have some slapping time!"
Crap.
Natha tilted his head at me and narrowed his eyes. "Sweetheart?"
I pressed my lips and smiled sheepishly. "Hmm, so...there was this attack..."
I started to tell him about the attack, although I mostly told him about what happened after we caught them than the attack itself. I mean...what could I tell him other than I hit them here and hit them there?
"Jade can’t see it because Jade still sleeping inside yummy ball," the little boy pursed his lips for a second before regaining his excitement. "But Ignis say Papa do hit! Hit! Woosh! Stab stab!"
"No slapping?"
"Ignis say Papa don’t touch them with bare hands!"
Natha finally smiled again and patted my head in praise. "Good job."
"Alveitya did most of the thing," I shrugged. "I mostly just tie them up.
"Kinky."
"Ra Natha!" I smacked him and glared. Our eldest son is still up!
The round green eyes blinked innocently. "What is kin--"
"Oh, it’s getting late! Let’s sleep now so we can get up early tomorrow!" I laughed nervously and pulled Jade away from the smirking nightmare who had no qualms about polluting a kid’s pure mind.
Jade followed me to lay down on the mattress, but asked curiously while clutching on my nightwear. "Why get up early tomorrow?"
"To have fun, of course!" I whispered as if it was some great secret. "We won’t be back to the human realm tomorrow, only the day after."
"Have fun!"
Jade exclaimed joyfully, and I told him that we wouldn’t be able to have fun if he woke up too late, and that got Jade closed his eyes tightly. A nice attempt that only worked after Natha patted him softly for about fifteen minutes.
"Phew..."
I let out a breath of relief after successfully dodging a risky discussion with a two-year-old bird-boy that got me gulping down two glasses of water. Annoyingly, the culprit was laughing behind me instead, so I turned around to slap his arm again.
"You and your mouth!"
"Forgive me," he smiled sweetly, and the combination of his handsome face with my longing melted my annoyance so fast it felt like a joke.
"Hmph!" I pursed my lips and turned away from him. "You’re lucky I love you."
Cunningly, he sneaked his hand around my waist and embraced me from behind. I could feel his lips on my temple as he whispered deeply. "Yeah, I am the luckiest person in this world."
"Don’t make me blush!"
He laughed, and we stepped into the balcony so we didn’t have to be extra careful with volume. After all, the noise protection did not cover Jade’s senses. Also...well, I wanted to be alone with Natha for a bit too, sitting on his lap and leaning against his chest to be enveloped in his soothing temperature.
"How about you?" I asked after a few minutes of blissful silence where we basked in each other’s presence and nothing more.
"Hmm?"
"What have you been doing while I was away? You said you’d tell me," I reminded him of our conversation earlier before I returned to the Lord Castle.
"Ah, that..." he hummed. "I was trying to get all of the keys, so there are a lot of negotiations happening right now--you know, cooperation treaty and such."
"...huh?"
I raised my head and blinked at his response. It wasn’t so much of the answer rather than the way he said it in such a casual, nonchalant way people would think he merely talked about the weather.
My drying throat swallowed hard, and I asked him to make sure. "The keys...of the Lords?"
"Yeah."
My eyes widened at the simple smile formed on his lips. Was that...was that something you could say with a tone you were using to decide what you wanted to eat for breakfast?
I shifted my body so I could look at his face more clearly. But that calm expression did not go away, and the silver eyes were the epitome of serenity.
"Are you...trying to be..."
"No," he stroked my cheeks, which I just realized were trembling. "There’s no way I’ll leave you and Shwa to live in the Sanctuary."
Oh, that was such a relief.
"But...you know how having the seven keys would allow me to be free of the King’s influence?" he smiled. "I don’t know if it’ll be enough to make me free of Lord An’Hyang’s influence, but at the very least..."
Oh...oh, my husband. I grasped his face and kissed him with all my heart. I didn’t know I could love him more, but I just did.
