Chapter 597: Look at me being a representative of greed

"Can a Demon Lord from another Realm just in and out of the Castle like that?" I tilted my head when Uncle Sol came inside the dining room, leaving his griffin on the balcony.

"Can you order a new Demon Lord for anything anytime these days?" Uncle Sol quipped, and all I could do was grin while hiding behind my Demon Lord husband.

Well, he talked like that, but her tone was still soft, and he looked at me with a smile. I guessed he still felt guilty about what his disciple had done, even though it wasn’t his fault. Otherwise, a new Demon Lord who still had to consolidate his power in the new territory wouldn’t just use his precious time making a set of teleportation tokens in three nights when it usually took two weeks.

No wonder he looked even more sleep-deprived.

"I don’t have much time, so I’ll explain this quick," he walked over and placed the plaques in my hands. "One in point A, one in point B, and this one needs to be held by the person moving."

"Ah...like an identificator?’

"More or less," he nodded. "That’s why only one may move from point to point. Familiars and contracted beasts tied to the person so they wouldn’t take a spot."

Just like any teleportation spell, I see. I looked at Jade and we both exhaled in relief.

"Just pour your mana into the token, and it will do the job," he continued. "The further the distance, the greater the mana intake will be, but...I guess that wouldn’t be a problem for you."

"Really?"

Uncle Sol tilted his head to look at me keenly. "You could probably move from one edge of the world to the other if you’re in full mana."

Huh...that was pretty neat. But just to make sure, I would only activate it while my mana core was full. Well, maybe seventy percent was enough? Yeah, let’s set the limit at seventy percent.

"Lastly, I don’t think I need to say this, but make sure you give the point tokens to someone you trust the most," he looked into my eyes and warned me in a low voice. "If this is broken in the middle of activation, you’ll be stranded in a random place. The spell will stop and you will be dropped wherever the spell is unraveling; could be high in the sky, underwater, or even inside a stone cliff."

...that was scary. Reminded me of druid spells--which meant I was used to this kind of risk! Hahaha!

"Don’t worry," I nodded and clutched the plaques tightly. "My friend will never betray me even if she had to fight her own family."

I only realized too late how damaging my declaration was when I saw a bitter smile on Uncle Sol’s hardened face. "That’s...reassuring," he nodded.

"Uhm..."

"Well, that’s it--I need to fly," he waved his hand and turned around.

"Uhh, oh--thank you!"

Well, I felt like saying anything would also make it worse, so I just pressed my lips and nudged Nath. He smiled subtly, and we followed the magician--uhh, Demon Lord of Pride--to the balcony.

"Seems like you’re busy," Natha chuckled. "We’re not interrupting you from a meeting or anything, right?"

You should at least sound a bit guilty when saying stuff like that, my Lord.

"No," he sighed heavily while climbing to the back of his griffin. "I just want to go back and sleep."

We blinked and watched the griffin fly away wordlessly before looking at each other and laughing. "Pfft--at least I can go without worrying about going back now."

* * *

Indeed--knowing I could go back and forth easily made it easier to step through the portal--this time, truly for the last time. Also, I wasn’t alone this time. I came with Ignis--who was very eager to leave because it had been tensed and terrified of making fire somewhere near the nursery--and Jade, who unfortunately had to return to bird form again.

[Why?!]

"Because a child can’t go inside the auction hall," I told the bird. "If you’re in your human form, you can’t go with me. Familiars can, however."

Jade gasped and chirped twice in response as if trying to show the world it was merely a nice little bird.

"What about you, Ignis?"

"Hmm...I’ll stay around to see if there’s interesting rock on sale," the Salamander said before crawling behind my cloak.

Pfft--true to your desire, I see. Or, perhaps Ignis just didn’t care about accidentally setting a human’s building on fire.

"Are you ready?" Zarfa peeked inside the room we were staying in her mansion which, from the look of it, had been designated solely for me--after all, it was the only bedroom with many plants placed in it.

"Yup," I nodded, glancing at the mirror once again.

I might pass the human look since...well, I was originally a human; but I needed to change my clothes since what I usually wore looked too much like what the elf would wear--or demons with high status and peculiar taste.

The point was, I did not look culturally human.

"Hmm...as expected, you look too ’noble’," Zarfa laughed. "It’s the best look for the auction, but I think we need to shop some clothes for your journey."

"Sure," I nodded. I mean, she had more experience in this than I ever was. "Just don’t tell Arta about it."

She cackled and made an okay sign. "Well, I’ll try to find ones that feel most comfortable."

And so, we went around to shop before going to the auction, buying something with a more ’adventure’ vibe than my usual homebody tunics. Still, since we were looking for comfortable stuff, we ended up with stuff that nobles usually wore for hunting, or cloaks for magicians. I so wanted to try those normal adventure gear, but I must have grown so spoiled because the moment I touched the fabric, I was immediately put off.

Arta would be so proud of me.

Haa...I was starting to worry about whether or not I would survive staying in the wild.

"Please send them back to the mansion," Zarfa told the coachman in a rather loud voice, as if to make sure everyone in front of the auction house could hear it.

Indeed; she wanted people to hear--to be exact, she wanted the auction staff to hear. In fact, one of the staff immediately came out to greet her and guided us inside. So, it really was a play of power--or wealth?

Well, anyone would immediately do that for us back in the demon realm even if Natha only stood still, so I didn’t really know.

Inside, we met with the others in the lobby. Most people had entered the auction hall, so the lobby wasn’t really crowded--which I liked. Since the staff knew who Zarfa, Fatia, and of course Jin were, he was very polite while guiding us to a private booth. My best friend, however, didn’t seem happy about it.

"Huff--if it’s my father, we’ll be able to book the best room," she grumbled quietly.

I asked why, and she told me that no matter how wealthy the Goldbel was, Zarfa was still the youngest daughter. She was also there as an owner of a new company she just built, so status-wise, she wasn’t at Midas’s level. And you know what was annoying about having too much integrity like Fatia and Jin? They tended to refuse special treatment, so people didn’t bother giving them some.

"And if I whine about it to my father, he’ll just laugh and say something like it’s my fault for not being successful enough on my own--ugh."

Pfft--sounds like she built a nice relationship with her father in this life.

"But this is a good room too, right?" I asked curiously.

"It is--for general auction," Zarfa shrugged. "But there is supposed to be a higher tier auction at the end, and only those staying on the highest floor--those best rooms--could access it."

"Does the highest-tier auction have better stuff?"

"Logically," Zarfa beckoned at the staff guiding us. "Do you have any leak for the late-night auction?"

The staff smiled politely--those business smiles that meant he wouldn’t answer the question at all. "I’m sorry, Miss, but--"

A pouch of gold coins transferred hand and disappeared along with the staff’s rejection.

"--but I can’t say too much," he changed his tone smoothly, appropriately lowering his voice as he continued. "All I heard is some precious minerals and relics will be included."

"Rocks..." a soft hiss came behind me, along with a giggling chirp.

[Ignis’s favorite!]

"Relics?" Jin raised his brows. "From ruins?"

"I am not privy to the details, Sir," the staff replied diplomatically. "But there should be a brochure provided for the participants."

"Damn..."

"Rocks."

Yes, yes--rocks.

I leaned down and whispered to Zarfa. "How can we participate? My lizard wants some rocks."

"Ugh...it’s by invitation only," Zarfa pursed her lips. "I guess it’s possible with platinum medallions, but only my father has that in our family."

Hmm...I didn’t know what a platinum medallion looked like, but...

"What about this?"

I took out the encased medallion and showed it to both Zarfa and the staff, who blinked silently for a few seconds. The staff eventually snapped and took out a device from his coat.

"May...may I examine it?"

"Sure," I shrugged and handed the medallion to him.

It seemed like the device was running the authenticity of the medallion and checked the balance in the account. I was examining the device intrigued, and it looked like that information was conveyed through a series of runic codes in a magic circle.

How interesting.

Before I could see more, however, the staff gasped and I flinched in surprise. His eyes were so wide I wondered if he was seeing ghosts instead of runes. He quickly took the medallion off the device but handed it back slowly, carefully, with two slightly shaking hands.

"I...I shall prepare a new room right away!"

The staff bowed deeply and we were immediately ushered to a new floor by not one, but four staff who acted more or less like those bank people to Natha.

Zarfa nudged me and asked quietly. "How much did your husband put in that account?"

"No idea," I shrugged, but I did hear something about ’no limit’--whatever it actually meant.

One thing I knew was that money was truly the best and I rather enjoyed it.
