Chapter 553: Be careful of what you say if your partner has a good memory
Jade was holding my face--and by face, I meant nose--with its wings one day. The beady eyes were sparkling. [Papa is medium happy!]
"Pfft--what do you mean medium happy?"
[Happy but not as happy as wedding happy] Jade giggled while hopping to my open palms. [Papa is not happy after Zia gone, so Jade is happy too]
"Aww, what a sweet child you are," I nuzzled Jade’s belly, prompting a crisp chirping in place of laughter. "But, hmm...I don’t think anything can make me happier than that," I said, looking up to ponder. "Except maybe when Shwa is born later."
Natha whispered behind my earlobe. "What about bed happy?"
I turned and smacked his upper arm. "There’s a child here!" I hissed, but he just laughed it off while nonchalantly walking to the couch where D’Ara was calmly having his late afternoon tea.
I mean...it did make me happy, but what if Jade started to ask questions? What would you tell the child, huh? Huh?!
"What are you thinking about?" he smirked, leaning back against with crossed arms. "You said you’re always happy waking up because it means you’re alive another day."
I was about to sit down, but his words made me pause. Did I say that? I tilted my head, wondering if I was half asleep when I said it. But then, I remembered that It was something I had said in my previous life.
Yeah--I said it to him when he asked why I had a broad smile during the first visit that day.
"Y-you still remember that?" my eyes widened in surprise. And embarrassment.
If I had to be honest, I was probably smiling because I was happy that he became my attending resident, but...there was no way virgin Valen could say something like that to a handsome doctor. That being said, I didn’t lie about the statement itself.
Indeed; rather than the lonely dark night, where I didn’t dare to wake the nurses up when I needed something, and where the question if I would be able to wake up the next morning always surfaced, of course, I prefer the morning that proved I got older even a day more.
He reached my arm to pull me onto the couch gently. The smile and soft gaze were nothing like the face he had when he talked about paybacks the other day. "I remember anything you said."
"Wow, what an obsessive brat," D’Ara scoffed.
"You call it ’loving’, Teacher," Natha retorted cheekily. "Loving."
"You’re lucky Valen likes you back," she rolled her eyes in annoyance, but Natha just grinned.
"I guess," he shrugged before hugging my shoulder and getting kicked by Jade because of it.
Ah, so peaceful.
I guessed it wasn’t so lonely anymore with Lesta and Eruha back. Lesta, who finally could take a break from the frontline, spent a lot of time looking for me--or to be exact, looking for the snacks around me. I could also resume my studies with Eruha, which lessened the time I had just rolling around feeling empty.
Well, you could also say that I just got used to Zia’s and Izzi’s absences, so...there was that.
Ah, and I was probably the happiest during this time before dinner, because D’Ara and Jade returned from the mysterious training and I could heal my soul by rubbing Jade’s fluffy tummy.
"By the way, what about that fishing thing?" I asked while rubbing the pattern above Jade’s head. "Got anything?"
[Fishing?] Jade opened the green eyes wide. [Where Natha fishing? In akurium?]
"Aquarium," he corrected. "And no; I’m fishing outside the Realm."
[For Jade’s fishes’ friend?]
They were all became your friends? Was it because I let Jade swim in the fish tank often?
Surprisingly though, Natha pondered Jade’s innocent words seriously. Too seriously. "...you know, that’s not a bad idea."
"Nat?"
My stroking fingers stopped and Jade poked me in protest. But all I could think about at that time was ’are you serious?!’ because I saw that eerie light in his eyes again.
"Your grandfather had an interesting way to punish his enemy, don’t you think?" he smirked. Why did he have to smirk? It looked annoyingly good on him!
"Uhh..." now I recalled back to the feeding dolphin discussion. As far as I knew, there was no known man-eating fish or carnivorous ones being traded in the market, but...if it was Natha, I had a feeling he could have it here in a month--or even a week. "Will you really?"
He tilted his head slightly and smiled without saying anything. Biting my lips, I covered Jade’s head for a bit.
"I’m not saying no," I whispered. "I’m just curious."
"You’ll know later," he shrugged.
"Oh, come on!"
He laughed and patted my head, which reminded me there was a little bird protesting because I stopped stroking its head. Natha leaned on the backrest and looked at me with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. "Wouldn’t it be more fun? It won’t be fun if I spoil the climax of the show, will it?"
"I guess so..."
But this wasn’t supposed to be a show, was it?
He smiled and started to stroke my head too, as if copying what I did to Jade. "You don’t need to dirty your hand for this, sweetheart," he said softly. "It’s my part now, so just wait relaxedly and play around."
"Oh, fine," I let out a sigh. "But my Lord..."
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"I have no one to play around with," I pursed my lips.
Zia and Izzi were gone, the vassals were working, and Jade was busy training. Of course, I could go and visit Shwa. But unlike before when I could stay the whole day to have a picnic or even stay the night there, I was only allowed a short visit of an hour a day.
Natha did say he would come to my side anytime I called him, but I knew enough that he was busy preparing things for his big ’weeding’, so I couldn’t bring myself to disturb him. I was thinking of visiting the dungeon to check on the prisoners and see how Angwi was doing, but that wasn’t really ’playing’ now, was it?
So...do you want me to play by myself, my Lord?
"Ah..." the patting on my head stopped as he smiled wryly.
Jade, who had been drowsy before under my stroking, gasped and jumped up. [Papa...] the little bird tugged on my hair. [Jade will play with Papa!]
"No, Jade," D’Ara took a rest from her chocolate binge-eating to give a stern warning. "You can’t pause the training or you might forget the sensation."
[But...but Papa...] Jade looked at me and D’Ara. I felt sorry but...the panic movement of the green head was truly adorable.
"Haa..." suddenly, we heard an exasperated sigh from somewhere. "It’s not like Valen only has one companion."
With a crisp crackling sound, a little lizard crawled out of the fireplace. [Ignis!] Jade exclaimed excitedly. It had been a while since we had seen Ignis. Our introverted salamander requested a long me-time after making sure I was alright post-incident.
"Oh, my..." I gasped and covered my lips. "Are you going to play with me?"
"Sure," the salamander crawled toward the couch, replying nonchalantly. "Do you want to have a lava bath?"
"Wow," D’Ara chuckled.
"Oh..." I stroked my chin in contemplation. Thanks to my contract, I wouldn’t get hurt in a magma pool that Ignis created from salamander’s fire. If anything, it would probably feel like a hou spring--no, no, a mud spring? You know, the kind that had sulfur in it?
That didn’t sound bad, actually. It also had been a while since I practiced any magic--although we could say that I had a lot of practice in the forest that night.
"That’s enticing, but..." The excitement I felt while imagining the lava bath deflated as I faced reality. "I can’t get too far away from Shwa."
"True," the salamander nodded, suddenly on my shoulder already while I was thinking. Jade jumped onto my shoulder to hug the salamander, and Ignis pushed the little bird away. "Well, what about your wyvern? It’s been a while since you’ve ridden heeer?!"
I grasped the salamander and lifted the lizard with sparkling eyes. "Yes! That’s right!" I exclaimed. Oh, how could I forget about it? Perhaps because it had been too long since I was able to move around. "I’m healthy enough to ride Vrida now!"
I laughed and twirled in the air with the protesting Ignis in my hands and Jade chirping in joy. "You’ll come too, right?"
I looked at the salamander’s blue eyes and grinned. Ignis was visibly startled and made a disgusted face, but I blinked my eyes slowly and jutted my lower lips.
Come on, Ignis...don’t you see how pitiful I am?
"Ugh..." the light blue eyes flickered and the lizard’s head turned to the side as it grumbled. "F-fine!"
"Yaaay!" I twirled around again, laughing to find a new entertainment--ahem, I mean, activity to do. Yes, activity. As I danced around the room, my eyes landed on the dark window, which was decorated with white dots. "Oh?"
The white dots fall slowly, clear against the dark background, and I couldn’t help but gasp. "Snow!"
[Snow!]
Jade and I looked at each other before we went into a dancing frenzy and screaming around the room. "Whooo!"
[Snow! Snow! Snow!]
Amidst the innocent joyful laughter, Natha smiled and muttered behind his wine glass. "What a nice day for an execution."
