Chapter 530: Isn’t it fascinating how fast children can heal?

"Ignis," Natha called out softly through the slightly open window, before returning to the bed where Valen was curling peacefully under a blanket.

He stroked the blossoming cheeks tinted with exhaustion and satisfaction, listening to the steady heartbeat and savoring the soft breathing. He stared and stared at the smiling lips that filled his heart with warmth but also pain.

These days, he just felt like he was constantly failing. Failing to uphold his promise of filling Valen’s life with nothing but smiles and sunshine. But more than anything, failing to stop Valen from worrying. What a failure he was, that even his sweetheart had to scold him this morning.

Natha let out a bitter, self-deprecating chuckle.

"I’ll tell Valen if you keep making that face," Ignis flicked his tail against the windowsill to close it, the bright light blue eyes flickered in warning.

"Alright, alright," Natha chuckled and raised his hands in defeat. These children truly took Valen’s hidden fierceness. Well...sometimes it helped Valen to get more vocal and confident too, so it was a good thing.

Evidently, they were also good snitches.

The funny thing was, they snitched to both of them about each other. Like good children.

"Are you going out?" the little Salamander asked while curling itself near Valen’s head.

"I need to deal with those people," a cold burst escaped him for a second. "Give me a signal when he’s about to wake up."

"Alright," Ignis ducked its head between its front legs before adding in a low tone. "I want in on the slapping part too."

"Sure," Natha chuckled before disappearing in a flurry of black feathers.

I dreamed of a lush forest bathed in sunlight. Flowers were blooming even though it was winter already. The vibrant colors peeking out of the pure white snowfield looked so vivid I could almost smell it.

"Oh," when I opened my eyes, I almost felt disappointed.

Not for long though, since Natha was there, brushing my hair off my face and greeting me good morning--although it was definitely not morning, considering I was asleep right before lunch.

"You’re up?" it was wonderful seeing his expensive face from below. Especially followed by a soft kiss on my forehead. "I’d say you can sleep more if you like, but you also need to have your lunch."

Wow...what a nice life I had; sleeping, eating, sleeping, eating again. I didn’t even need to wash myself since my lovely husband doing it for me. Didn’t even need to exercise...unless our two rounds before I fell asleep could be considered as one.

Hmm...I was pretty sure it could be considered as cardio.

Anyway, I stared at him blankly as I savored the blissful life that made me forget I just had a brush with the world of nothingness not long ago. Perhaps that was why I noticed the slight hardness in his eyes; a leftover tension that he couldn’t completely hide--just like the slight drop of temperature in his fingers.

"What is it?" he asked softly. "Are you still sleepy?"

"Did you go somewhere earlier?" I asked curiously because he was already in his homewear; a simple tunic he usually wore if we didn’t have any plans during his day off.

"...no?"

Pfft--I giggled at his hesitation. Natha had become worse at hiding something from me ever since we got married, and I was kind of glad about it. I had no idea if it was because of our deeper connection, or simply because he felt too guilty to hide stuff from me. Either way, it was a good thing--and sometimes funny.

I raised my arms so he could help me up, and once I did, I squeezed his cheeks. "My silly husband," I laughed at his surprised face. "When I said I want you to be here, it means I want you to be able to be on my side whenever I call you. It doesn’t mean you have to be in my sight every second of the day."

I mean...he was still the Lord. I couldn’t expect him to be within arms reach all the time. I just wanted him to be close enough that if I needed him, I just had to ask for the servants to fetch him or call him through the communication orb--and he’d be in front of me in seconds.

So...yeah, it was rather funny to see a panic flashing through his eyes when I found out he was leaving earlier. It was also funny that he went as far as changing his clothes to make it seem like he never left.

How cute.

"Really?" he replied with a distorted voice since I was playing with his cheeks; squeezing and pinching. "You don’t want to spend every second with me?"

Normally, I would fall for this and get flustered. But I squeezed his cheeks tighter and lightly headbutted him. "How can you punish our enemies if you spend every second with me?"

He raised his brows, staring at me wordlessly for a few seconds before laughing. He laughed while pulling me in a tight hug and buried his face on my shoulder. "Ahh..." he chuckled against my neck before pulling away and giving me a gentle peck. "You’re unbeatable."

"Well, I am Shwa’s Papa."

I exhaled through my nose and crossed my arms, prompting Natha to laugh again. The hardness in his eyes, which I reckoned was there because he had just dealt with them while I had my nap, dissolved into the soft moonlight I was familiar with.

"Indeed," he nodded in agreement.

Hmm...since he seemed to be okay now, shall I try to ask?

"Umm...Nat?" I stroked his shoulder carefully, recalling the nice dream I just had.

But Natha beat me into it. "Do you want to see Shwa?"

I couldn’t help but gasp. Not because he accurately guessed it, but because his soft smile seemed to tell me he would give me permission easily.

Wow...what a good day.

"My baby!"

The moment I entered the shed in Natha’s arms, it was full of the fragrant scent of flowers and fresh grass. Shwa was vibrating rapidly, just like Jade when the bird was flying around in joy after eating delicious jellies.

Jade wasn’t with us this time, but I could easily imagine its reaction.

In Jade’s place, the fairies were filling the joyful part, dancing around as if making a welcoming party. How cheery, considering this place was in danger just like...thirty hours ago?

Eh--as long as we are all alive, I guessed?

Shwa seemed to be fine too, judging from this fragrant garden. Didn’t seem like the crying and screaming child back then. Natha did say he had visited Shwa once I was securely back in the bedroom, surrounded by the vassals and Angwi. He had calmed Shwa then, and I guessed this child had sensed that I was alright--well, as alright as I could be--and like any other child, they were just happy to see us visiting together.

Natha put me down in front of our little flower, and I hugged the trembling petals. "My baby! You must have been scared, mm? But you endured it well, what a good child!"

Some flowers around us let out a popping sound, almost like confetti. It was totally cute and Jade would have rolled happily if it was here. But like Zia, Jade had been forcing its baby self to be awake ever since I lost consciousness, so I let the little bird catch some sleep.

"Can you do that again later when Jade is here?" I asked Shwa with a laugh. "Oh, no--I don’t think I can visit often yet, but I’ll try as soon as I can, okay?"

Shwa was trembling again, and the petals swayed in Natha’s direction. I looked at him, and he was blinking in surprise.

"Oh?" his brows raised. "Yeah, of course. I’ll still come even if Valen can’t."

Another popping sound--gosh! Our child is so cute!

"You understand what Shwa said?"

"I can guess," Natha smiled. "I am also the father, after all."

"That’s right," I rubbed the white petals and the blue patterns all over it. "So you don’t need to worry, Shwa. We will protect you no matter what, okay? Just grow well and come to us as comfortably as you can, okay?"

"But it’ll be better if you come as soon as possible."

"Hey!" I smacked Natha playfully. "Don’t pressure the kid."

Natha looked at me incredulously. "You shouldn’t use violence in front of our child, sweetheart," he gasped, and I pinched him even more. He laughed and squeezed my nose in retaliation. "What? I thought you also wanted to see Shwa quickly?"

Ugh...well, I did, but...

"But I don’t want Shwa to come out prematurely just because we want to see them quickly," I pursed my lips in worry.

"Well...that’s true," Natha nodded. "Let’s just be born healthily," he smiled and stroked the pulsing bud.

The petals trembled again and wrapped themselves around our hands, which they couldn’t do before. "Oh? Isn’t Shwa more flexible now? They can communicate better even without words!"

"Of course. Shwa is our child, after all," Natha said, sounding like a proud father already.

I giggled and the branches of the tree trembled this time, showering us with fallen leaves and white flowers. We laughed and had some snacks of mana stones so I wouldn’t get mana deficiency when I came out. Shwa sounded sad when I bid them goodbye, but the smart child already knew it wasn’t good for me to spend too much time there in my current condition.

"Haa..." still, I couldn’t help but feel unfortunate that I couldn’t see my child often. "Do you think D’Ara will come soon?"

"She will," Natha said, prompting me to look at him in surprise. "She said she might come tomorrow."
