Chapter 480: A normal and peaceful morning always starts with a little teasing
"Papa, what are they talking about?" Jade looked at me with confusion.
"Something difficult," I squeezed Jade slightly while glancing at the two merchants talking business.
How could a conversation about conceiving a child turn into conquering a region through the economy? And could something like this be decided that fast? Not even through a meal? Damn...
But knowing they did it because of me, because they loved me, was...
I buried my face in Jade’s hair to hide the giggle that almost came out. It was nice--it was so nice that I was afraid I would get too spoiled and tempted to use them for my gain.
Jade cupped my cheeks and giggled. "Papa is happy," he whispered. "Jade happy when Papa happy."
"Oh, baby...I love you sooo much!" I kissed the chubby cheeks and the tiny fists and we laughed together before I carried him up. "Let’s leave the business talk and have some breakfast in the garden."
"Oh, oh, can Jade have cocoa jelly today?"
"Of course, you can--but don’t tell Natha, okay?"
"Okay!"
"I heard that," Natha whispered behind us, making us jump in surprise and giggle at the same time from being caught. He took Jade--who truly had become heavier--from my arms and squeezed the boy’s round cheek. "You’re being promised candy and chocolates already, so why do you still want to eat cocoa jelly? You should save good things instead of consuming them all at once."
Jade had no concept of metabolism, so he could actually eat whatever he wanted without affecting his body at all. But Natha still liked the idea of instilling discipline in Jade, which was kind of...endearing, I guess. How do I say this...
"He’s acting like a father," Zarfa whispered with a giggle while hugging my arm. "Almost seems like he wants to be a father longer than you."
...oh.
I...hadn’t really thought of that. But if we put it in his perspective, Natha had been told that his fate was to have a ’child’ with me. He had been carrying the Primordial Seed for decades. Wouldn’t it be natural that he had been waiting for this moment longer--waaay longer than me? Like...seventy years longer?
Oh...I failed to realize it all this time, perhaps because he had been acting as if he didn’t want us--or rather, me--to get through with it, because...because he thought it would be too dangerous for me.
Even though it was something he himself had been desiring.
The realization made me stop on my track and cupped my warmed cheeks. Zarfa tilted her head to peek at me and poked my side. "Gosh--you’re falling so hard, huh?"
"Yeah..."
For this one fact, I would never be ashamed to admit it.
But still, a love profession before breakfast was rather awkward, so I cleared my throat and diverted the topic. "Umm...you said you’ll make your base here? So that means you’ll stay in the kingdom in the foreseeable future?"
"Yeah," Zarfa nodded as we stepped into the garden. "I mean...almost all of them are settling here. Fatia is obvious, but Jin and Ian too...especially Jin, he is loved here, and the regent’s family supports him genuinely--you know, unlike the previous place. Even if we make a journey for some missions, we still need a place to go back to, don’t we?"
"Yeah," I agreed. "Home is a nice thing."
"Well, for me, it’s also a chance to make a venture for myself," she grinned, before frowning slightly while making a punching motion. "I really want to hit those people who caused the druid kingdom to fall, but..." she glanced at me apologetically. "I can’t just use the family’s capital to do it, since it’s a high-risk venture with uncertain gain."
I patted her silly head and chuckled. "You didn’t have to do it in the first place, but thanks for doing it," I leaned closer and whispered. "Isn’t that why you asked Natha for some capital? Because you thought he’d easily agree?"
"Guilty as charged," she giggled. "I knew he’d agree to anything with you as motivation."
Like Natha said; how cunning.
But I couldn’t blame her, since Natha did easily relent to stuff he thought would make me happy. And, well...honestly, the thought of getting back the druid’s rightful land did make me happy.
"What about Aina?" I asked, since I didn’t hear her name mentioned earlier.
"Oh, I think she’ll settle here too eventually--especially if your husband truly moves his financial venture here," Zarfa tapped her cheek. "I already offered her a room here or a lodge on the hill over there, but she said she’ll think about it first after discussing it with her partner."
Ah, the one who designed the inter-realm communication orb’s magic formation.
"Well, that’s nice!" I clasped my hands. "It’ll be easier if we want to have a reunion."
"Yep, yep--you can just teleport here or..."
Zarfa paused and stopped walking, before gasping suddenly and turning around, running toward Natha who had been leisurely following a little boy chasing some dragonflies.
"Doc! Doc!"
Once again, our breakfast got delayed.
"Doc, listen to me!" she waved her hand energetically when he arrived in front of Natha. "There’s a lot that will be sold near my merchant guild. I was planning to purchase it for a warehouse, but I’ll let you have it."
Natha raised his brow before lifting Jade, ending the boy’s dragonfly chase. "What’s the catch?"
"A portal," Zarfa crossed her arms and grinned. "Install a portal inside your building, and let me or Valen use it."
The grey eyes narrowed, wordlessly asking for more explanation.
"You see...isn’t it a drag for Valen if he had to use the uncomfortable teleportation scroll to move around? And you won’t always be available to teleport him, also..." she lowered her voice. "When he preggo later--"
"It doesn’t work like that!" I smacked her.
"Sure, but you said it yourself that you might not be able to move around during the whole process, right?"
"Well...yeah...?"
"So," she turned to Natha again. "Wouldn’t it be more convenient if I could come? Aina too--and it’s not just a matter of hanging out, no, no--that magician will be coming again to deliver some items or beg for Amrita again; I can act as a proxy, then."
"Hmm..."
"Why don’t you make the portal, then?" I asked her.
Zarfa clicked her tongue and wiggled her finger. "I’m not that rich."
Pfft--what? So you openly insinuate that you were extorting my husband?
"But the other reason as to why it should be in your building is--"
"Access," Natha tapped his chin in contemplation. "The access to the portal."
"Yep!" Zarfa nodded. "I know it’s hard to trust a human like me; you might be afraid that someone from this side will use the portal to invade your territory, right?"
Natha did not answer, but that in itself was an affirmation. I could see that she was also amused by Zarfa’s self-awareness.
"But, if it’s in your building, you can control who can access it--hell, you can even put it inside a vault!" she opened her arms, grinning. "Also, if your company investing in mine, it wouldn’t be weird for me to go back and forth between our office, right? It’ll be rather weird if it’s your employee who visits me often, anyway."
"Make sense," Natha nodded, as if installing an inter-realm portal was the equivalent of installing a mansion’s gate. He looked at Zarfa and smirked. "Although it seems like you’re not even considering I’ll use the portal to invade the Human Realm instead."
...did you just say that in the open, with servants preparing our breakfast fifty meters away?
"Hmph, do you think I did not consider it?" Zarfa replied with a scoff.
"Oh?" Natha and I raised our brows. Was it because the Hero was here?
But her answer involved pulling me into calculation. "Valen wouldn’t let you do something like that, and you won’t do what Valen doesn’t want to do!" her eyes and lips curled. "And if Valen does approve of the invasion, it means the Human Realm has become so messed up that my sweet little friend here thinks intervention is needed, so...invade away!"
The hell?
Although...she wasn’t wrong about that, amazingly so. Or annoyingly so.
Natha raised his brow higher before bursting into laughter. "Hah!" he laughed until Jade protested because he got shaken in his arm. "If only you can share that cheekiness and greediness a bit with my sweetheart."
"Hey! What does that mean?" I pursed my lips in protest, but Zarfa squeezed my cheeks until my lips pouted.
"It means you’re not greedy enough, darling Valen," she laughed. "I know you are wealthy from birth, but you’re the Consort of Greed, come on!"
"What she said," Natha smirked and patted Jade’s head. "Even your child is greedier and sneakier than you."
"Yes! Jade ask what Jade want!" the little boy chirped in unison.
Aaagh--why is everyone cornering me?! Not fair!
