Chapter 443: Never underestimated a royal wedding

[Papa!]

It had been a while since I was woken up by Jade’s chirping, so it was a nice surprise.

[Papa, there’s a rabbit on the bed!]

Oh? I blinked my eyes open and instantly felt something soft curled up against my side. Jade was flying around above my head and landed on my pillow.

[Papa also not a rabbit anymore!]

Oh! It was an even nicer surprise! I instantly got up and checked my head. No ears! I looked back and twisted my hips. No tail!

"Yaaay!"

[Yaaay!]

I threw my hands up in a euphoric sensation of relief, and spent a while rolling around in the bed while hugging Jade and the clueless rabbit that got woken up from its sleep. I was about to send an emergency call to Amarein if I didn’t change back in three days, but it seemed like the rabbit got bored after Natha was gone since all I did was lounge around doing nothing.

And so, there it was, slipping out of me on the second day. Yaay!

The rabbit was feeling stuffy and annoyed, and jumped out of my hands to the opened balcony door that brought forth a fragrant scent of blossoming flowers. Ah...it came to me then that spring was here, and I was about to get married in ten days.

Oh, Mother. I’m about to get married in ten days!

Which means, my isolation days had begun. Well...it was called isolation, but really, all it meant was that I shouldn’t leave the Lair. People could still visit me if they wanted--all except Natha. If there was anything regarding the wedding business he wanted to talk to me about, it should be through a proxy.

Yep. Not even the use of a communication orb was allowed.

Aside from that, though...nothing really changed? I was already a homebody anyway, and the Lair encompassed a huge compound that included a cliff with a newly built cave system, a vast colorful forest with semi-sentient trees, and a beautiful garden. But oh...I couldn’t fly too far with Vrida, since I wasn’t allowed to leave the Lair’s airspace too.

But we still could sunbathe together and play in the bluegrass field, so all was well!

The person who was the happiest when I finally separated from the rabbit was my nanny--I mean, Angwi. She came to deliver my morning herbal drink and paused, before rushing in and grasped my face, checking me from head to toe. When she found out I had returned to how I was, she let out a breath of relief--the biggest expression I ever saw on her face. She even cradled my head and caressed my hair for a minute while I savored my morning drink.

Sweet, yeah? She also scolded me with her eyes afterward, and did not stop until I promised not to do that again.

"Lord Uncle will be disappointed," Zia commented when I came down.

"Hmph--if he feels disappointed about his bride returning to his original shape, then he better call the wedding off."

"Ooo..."

"’...call the wedding off,’ okay, anything else?" Izzi looked up from his notebook after apparently making a note, and I tilted my head in confusion.

"What are you doing?"

"I’m about to go meet the Big Boss later so, might as well relay some message, no?" he shrugged.

Oh, that made sense, yes, but...

"What are young here?" I tilted my head. I thought he was no longer living here and since the recording device was more or less done, there was no need for him to be here every day.

And yet, it was as if he was still sleeping here. Weird. I glanced at Zia, who just stuffed a cookie inside her mouth and gave some to Jade.

"Why? I can’t play here now after your order is done?" Izzi pursed his lips. Whoa--aggressive much? I was just asking, dude--not exactly evicting you. "I don’t know anyone over there, okay? It’s just...nicer over here."

My eyes curled by themselves. Sure...sure it was nicer here. I bet it would still be nicer here even if you had your family in the Castle. Huh? Huh?

"Ugh--whatever," he rolled his eyes at my smirk. "So? You have any message or not?"

"Nope," I grinned and shook my head. "Just tell him I miss him."

"Already?! He was here yesterday!"

"You were here yesterday," I raised my brow, and he pressed his lips in defeat. I smirked in triumph and, for the sake of the flustered succubus next to me, diverted the topic. "Aren’t you free of debt now? Does it mean you’re going back shortly?"

Zia twitched and oh...guessed I shouldn’t ask that openly? Ugh...

"Nah," Izzi shook his head; putting his notebook inside his coat and started to have his breakfast. Good job, Izzi, good job. "I told you; I’ll only go back after I have something to brag about. Something big."

"Oh--are you meeting Natha for that? For your next project?"

"Well...technically it’s his project, I guess?"

"Oh? What is--"

"Hey!"

Suddenly, the door to the dining room opened and Neel came with a scowl. Since she rarely made big expressions unprovoked, it was rather surprising. From her getup, however, it seemed that she was woken up from her sleep. The girl who seemed like she needed a jug of coffee stomped her feet and pointed at the window.

"Can you do something about that? It’s so noisy!"

I raised my brows and looked at Zia and Izzi, who gave me the same confused look. But then again, Neel’s hearing was the most sensitive among us. Angwi took it upon herself to open the window and vaguely, I could hear some sounds that weren’t usually here in the Lair.

The sounds of gravel and rolling wheels...a carriage? At that time, one of the guard twins came to the dining room to inform us of the ’guests’--f it could be called that.

"The gifts are here, Young Master."

"...what gift?"

* * *

I forgot. It was only last week but I had already forgotten that as a bride, I would start to receive gifts from the invitees.

It completely flew my mind, and even if I did remember, I would have thought the gifts would come one or two days before the wedding. Even more...I thought it would come to the Castle, not the Lair.

"No, but it’s the gifts for the bride--of course, it would go where the bride is!" Zia said while we watched the staff carry chests upon chests of gifts into a room that Angwi had emptied since who knows when. There was only a set of chairs and a table there in case I wanted to look at the gifts one by one.

And what do you know, I had to look at the gifts one by one. There was a whole list containing the gifts coming in today and who sent them. Of course, everything had been opened and checked by Malta to make sure nothing dangerous or illegal was there before getting sent here. The list was now in my only bridesmaid’s hand.

"Look, there are also gifts that are meant to be used before the wedding, so it wouldn’t make sense to store them in the Castle."

"Oh? What is that?"

"Hmm...something like a massage...doll? A whole crate of rare ingredients--oh, I think this is from Gluttony? And...hmm... these herbs...what do they do?"

Zia tilted her head, and Doun answered after a glance at the list. "They are stamina enhancers and--ahem--stimulants."

"For what?" I tilted my head, and, after seeing their slightly bashful expression, I understood it. "Oh...you mean...for that."

"Yeah," Zia laughed awkwardly, bending down to take a small chest with a unique fragrant. "I think it’s this one."

Hmm...that was interesting and all, but...

"They want me to have this?"

Izzi coughed and Angwi took the box from Zia’s stunned hand. Cheekily, the six-armed demon nanny returned the box to the staff’s hand and made a gesture to bring the box to Natha instead.

Yeah...I think he would need that more.

I glanced at the list in Zia’s hands, and saw rows upon rows of items. From small but luxurious jewelry to a chest full of beautiful fabric; rare ingredients and stress reliever pills; even all kinds of trinkets and decorations. The golems and Doun had come to help take out the gifts, putting them neatly inside a showcase or on a table, and moving the perishable to the kitchen.

At first, I only nodded and looked at the gifts excitedly because...well, it was a gift, right? It would be polite to be excited about it, according to the drows. But then...

But then I realized it was a lot. What I thought to be a carriage was actually plural--carriages. When I thought it was the end, more was coming, and by the time the staff finished unloading, the room was almost full.

[Waaa...there are lots! Lots of stuff!]

The most excited one, of course, was the little bird who was busy hopping here and there to look at all the gifts one by one. Although, in the end, Jade was no longer impressed.

[So much stuff, but no candy...]

Pfft--that was what you were looking for?

"What’s wrong, Jade?" Zia poked the sullen little bird.

"Jade is disappointed because there is no candy," I told her with a chuckle.

"Oh, that’s too early to tell, isn’t it?" Zia laughed in response. "Don’t worry, Jade--these are just a part of the gifts. I’m sure there will be many more to come."

"...what?" I looked around the room. "Even more...that this?"

"What are you talking about?" Zia looked at me incredulously. "This much? This is not even a quarter of what you’re supposed to get!"

I was so glad Angwi put a chair in the room because I was so in need of sitting down.
