Chapter 430: It really is not bad to live as a rabbit
I blink and pat the ground. It’s soft but cold; the grass bears leftover morning dews that cling stubbornly to the leaves. It’s not nice--why would a place be cold when the sun is shining brightly?
There--there’s a stone over there. It’s not soft, but it’s warm. Because it’s shining. I run over there, and pat the stone. Yes, it’s warm. Before my mind could tell me to, my body already laid down, and I let out a sigh.
Ahh...yes, this is how it’s supposed to be. It’s warm and nice, and I can hear the sound of trickling water, as well as smell the subtle fragrance of those little flowers sprouting between the tickling blades of grass.
It’ll be nice to take a nap like this, right?
Well, I try to, but I feel a vibration that comes closer and closer. When I try to close my eyes, I fly—umm, I mean, my body is getting lifted by a pair of claws. Oh, but it’s soft, so I guess they’re not claws. Hands?
And then I hear a sound of giggling, and next, I’m facing a face. Hmm...it’s familiar. I raise my hand and pat the chubby, pink cheeks. The green eyes stare at me with twinkles, and I remember suddenly.
Of course! It’s Jade! Jade! I squeezed the cheeks and rubbed my own to his. But...why are you so big, Jade? Since when do you grow so big?
Jade laughed and hugged me tight. Ouch--it’s too tight, Jade! Why are you so strong suddenly? I pat his cheeks to stop him, but my eyes catch an even bigger thing...creature...
The big scary creature poked my side with its nose. Oh? Oh! It’s Vrida! Vrida also becomes big!
Wow...are you usually this scary, Vrida? That teeth...I think it can easily crush me. Your eyes! I think your eyes is even bigger than me!
But you’re still my sweet girl, right? I pat her snout and I heard a thunderous purr. Is she laughing? Why are you laughing?! I wriggle out of Jade’s embrace and climb the textured skin of the wyvern. Jade pushes my butt up, and I manage to reach the top of Vrida’s nose. From here, I could see her horns and...oh! That looks like a nice place to sit!
With a determined mind, I climbed the walls between Vrida’s eyes, but ugh--I don’t think these soft hands are meant to climb things...
But perseverance is my thing! Yes! So I wiggled my butt and grabbed into any rough surface of Vrida’s skin, climbing step by step. When I reached the end of the hill, and turned around after steadying my heavy breath, I felt a huge sense of victory.
Oh! Oh! The view! It’s so high and unperturbed! I feel like I’m flying, even though I stay still. Wow! Wow! So this is why Jade likes to stay here so much!
I jump on my place happily, and it makes me lose my balance. I stumble and roll down Vrida’s nose into the tickling grass. It doesn’t hurt, though?
A soft growl can be heard, and Vrida nudges me with her nose, sending me to my feet again. Jade grabs me again and laughs. And I laughed too, because the slide was so exciting! He stumbles to his back with me in his embrace, and we laugh some more.
A soft and warm hand touches me then, caressing the back of my head. "Can you move around?"
Oh--it’s Aunty. My ears wiggle and I squirm out of Jade’s arms.
"You can run around the meadow if you want."
Run around! That sounds fun! My ears twitch and before I know it, my legs already move. It feels lethargic at first, heavy...but I want to run! I tell myself to run, and my legs feel stronger suddenly.
Gradually, I pick up speed and travel alongside the river. The breeze caresses my face and thrills my heart. Hey, this is fun!
"Wait! Wait for Jade!"
I glance back and see Jade is chasing me, but I keep running faster and faster, laughing. Come! Come! Chase me! Soon, I reach the edge of the forest and turn left, running along the rows of trees. The colors start to get blurry as I run even faster, and I skid around to run into the meadow, at an awaiting Amarein. Before I can jump to her arm, however, I get tackled from behind, and we both roll on the ground with a crisp sound of laughter.
Jade rubs his face on my stomach, and Amarein pats my head. "Can you turn back now?"
Turn back? I blinked slowly, repeatedly, for a few seconds, before looking down at my short, fluffy, white legs.
Oh, right! I’m a rabbit now! That’s why everyone looks so big!
Okay, okay...my ears twitch and I pull my limbs close, curling. With that, I also pulled my mana into a ball in the middle of Cotton’s chest and expelled myself.
Puff--the moment I got out, my mana spread up. I tried hard to concentrate, recalling my own body, my own soul, my own mind. I focused my consciousness on remembering who I was--and as I looked at Jade, at my childhood’s face, it became easier.
Slowly, my limbs materialized, all the way to my torso and head. With a popping sound, I came to be, stumbling about in the meadow as my mind struggled to adjust between having my limbs all to the ground and standing on just two longer legs.
"Papa is Papa again!"
Jade didn’t even wait until I gained my balance back, tackling me to the ground again. We rolled around again, with him in my embrace now, and we laughed again. Not just because we got dirt and grass all over our clothes, but also in victory.
Victory!
"I did it!" I grabbed Cotton the rabbit and raised my arms high and Jade followed, and we danced around while giggling until we stumbled again and Cotton hopped away nonchalantly.
Now that the contract was over, the rabbit acted like it didn’t care.
Even Amarein laughed and ruffled my hair--which was already a mess anyway. "Good job, darling," she stroked my cheek with a proud smile. "You did so well."
Oh, stop it! I felt embarrassed, but still giggled happily nonetheless. I didn’t think Amarein had ever praised me this much before; always the calm teacher who made her students think they should be able to do more. But this time, her eyes were sparkling, and her smile was bright. Perhaps because I didn’t stumble once? I mean...transformation-wise.
She even bragged about it later, once we were back at her house. The Chief, the Scribe, and a lot other Grandmas and Grandpas of the tribe were there too, as if we had a communal meeting, and I got so embarrassed that I had to hide my face behind Jade’s head, while my child was laughing happily with pride because people were praising his Papa.
"It’s incredible, to successfully do it in one try," Tilarein stroked my head. She already always looked at me with sparkling eyes, but now they were even brighter. "You really are Princess Yuralein’s grandson."
The other grandmas and grandpas--probably the only ones who knew my grandmother--nodded and started to talk about the past; all kinds of things usually happening to young druids when attempting fusion for the first time, things like that.
Sounded like a horror story, to be honest.
Thankfully, Amarein distracted me by questioning my experience earlier.
"At first, I think I was fully immersed in the rabbit’s mind," I told her--them. "I instinctively did what the rabbit usually do; hopping, sunbathing. I gained fascination about things that weren’t there when I was still in this form."
Like how I thought Vrida was scary, or that the space between her horns seemed nice, or that hopping around was exciting. I looked at Jade and wondered if he felt the same when he changed from bird-form to human-form.
"Sometimes it felt kind of blurry; the difference between the rabbit and me. Like...I knew I was Valen, I recognized Jade and Vrida and Aunty, but I also felt like I had always been in that form--I didn’t even realize I was a rabbit."
"I see..." Amarein nodded. "Both of your souls are in balance; no one fully taking control, no one truly dominates."
"But when Aunty told me to change back, my identity as a human druid instantly surfaced, so it’s not hard to separate ourselves," I continued.
"That’s amazing, honey!" Tiralein stroked my shoulder with a big smile.
I shook my head in embarrassment then. "No, it’s because the rabbit is very cooperative, and Aunty was there to keep me on the lane. If she didn’t ask me to change back, who knows how long I’ll stay in that form."
"Well, that’s exactly her job as an older druid," a grandpa from three houses down the road said. "But the fact remains that you did it without any accident."
"That’s right," the Scribe nodded. "Even the most docile creature could give inexperienced druids some trouble. So I’d say you do well, little prince."
And with that, the praising galore started again. I would have become a boiled crab if it wasn’t for Halurean coming with important news.
"The guide from Ahrat is here."
I gasped. Ahrat! The biggest underground city of the drows!
