Chapter 420: Wedding business is preparation for war

Chapter 420: Wedding business is preparation for war

Have you ever been involved in wedding preparation? If I had to offer my honest opinion, I would not recommend such an activity.

Not the wedding--I was very much down to it. But the preparation.

Especially not when your partner was one of the most important people in the whole region. No...the whole world?

I mean...I wasn’t even doing much, just fitting for outfits and being there, basically, but I already felt exhausted from Lesta’s deliberation about the preparation they all had to make for this event. What would become of me if I had to do everything by myself?

Although...well, if it was just me, I would just ask for a simple ceremony with friends and family and that would be it.

Alas. My fiance happened to be the candidate for the Demon King.

Meaning; it would be an inter-realm event.

Meaning; that even a matter of invitation was so complicated I felt like Lesta had been explaining war strategy rather than a list of invitees.

Do you know why we had more than one reception banquet? Because not everyone in this world was getting along with each other. Some demon clans despise each other, some Lords bore hostilities. There were those who couldn’t stand to be in the same room with other races. This resentment and bad blood were not to the point of risking war, but a fight might break out with the influence of alcohol and whatnot.

And so, Lesta had to make sure people who came to the banquet did not have a conflict of interest with the others. This grouping resulted in us having more than one reception banquet. And with different days, a different invitation card would be sent.

Even with this, there was a timing to be considered. There were tiers of invitees based on their importance to us, and the degree of our relationship with them. The timing of when the invitation arrived at their residence showed these tiers. There would be talks during tea time and soirees about who already received the invitation and who hadn’t, and it would reveal their standing amongst society--and thus should be handled with care.

Otherwise, it might create dissent and conflict.

On the other hand, it could also be used as a form of carrot and stick to warn those people of their allegiance, and could be used as a trick to both increase and mitigate conflicts between those figures.

Honestly, it all sounded ridiculous and over the top to me, but hey--I had never had a wedding before, much less a royal one, so...what do I know?

And even all of that was just a start. With all sorts of important people congregating in one place, every situation could become a sensitive topic. From decoration to food and performances, to even the clothes worn by the staff--everything should be carefully considered and calculated so no one would feel offended.

Have I talked about accommodation and security? No? Good, I didn’t want to. My brain had been fried enough.

It felt like opening Pandora’s box, and I had no idea if Natha did this because he felt guilty for not sharing the wedding invitation with me first, or because he wanted to tease me.

Naturally, the invitation card for each day would be different.

"Here you go, Young Master," Lesta took out three kinds of invitation, each in white, black, and red respectively. What similar was were the gold sleeves on each corner of the invitation, as well as the intricate thin gold pattern on the surface that could be felt by fingers as I stroked them.

Ah...I knew these were for my wedding, but they were truly beautiful enough to be framed--like what Zarfa would definitely do.

Not all of them, however, contained a teleportation formation on the other side. I presumed, for the white ones, it would only be for Zarfa who was all the way in the human realm, and two more.

One, it seemed, reserved for Natha’s Great Aunt--who was still a mysterious figure to me. Natha said he had no idea whether she would come or not, however. I would like for Aleena to be present, but since she would be there at the second day’s banquet, I refrain from sending her the invite for the ceremony. As a new Lord trying to fix a rotten system, she couldn’t afford to be away from her territory for days--no matter how much she wanted and whined about it.

The Vampire Lord...wouldn’t be there at the ceremony because D’ara would, and she didn’t want to ruin my precious day by bickering about how to run a territory with her nitpicky Mother.

In that case, the last one must be...

"Is this for Amarein?" I picked up a card encased in a beautiful protective box, almost like a frame.

"Yes," Natha nodded and finally took a seat beside me after Lesta was done with all of his lectures--I mean, explanation. "I know she can just fly over here easily, but there’s no reason to burden our guest with extra mana consumption. Lesta set the coordinate to the rooftop, by the way."

Oh, that was a perfect location for her! I nodded in satisfaction and Lesta gave me another box. "This is an invitation for the second day, similar to what we gave the elves and the representative of drows. You can relay them to the Chiefs when you go to the Realm of Nature, Young Master."

Natha’s hand stiffened on my shoulder. Right--in two days, I was going to leave again; for the Realm of Nature now. It wasn’t just for my delayed lesson with Amarein, but also to bring Vrida there and make her remember the path. There was also this invitation to give out now, but the most important thing was to make sure the converging spot guarded by the bribed fairies was still there and well.

Naturally, Natha didn’t like it, having me away to yet another realm on my own. But hey--at least it was a friendly place this time.

It wasn’t like I liked it too, but there was no time anymore before the wedding. Kind of weird, wasn’t it? The bride was busy with everything else but taking care of the wedding.

But anyway, the plan had been made, and I had told Amarein that I would go there. She even told me in a newly arrived letter that the elders had gathered again to welcome me. How could I not go after all of that?

"Haa...if we were on Earth, it’d be enough with just an office registry..." I whined into the pillow as I laid myself for a bit before dinner, even though I hadn’t changed yet. Well...I had to get back to the Lair after this anyway.

"That’s true," Natha stroked my back while laughing softly--seemed like he already made peace with my oncoming departure--and I rolled so I could lay my head on his lap.

"Would you be alright with that?"

He looked down and started to massage my temple; a beautiful smile on his face. "I’d be alright with anything if I had you," he said. "Getting married quietly, celebrating it with a nice dinner and honeymoon, and using the money to buy our future house instead."

I rolled again and hugged his torso, mumbling against his shirt. "That sounds lovely."

"Everything will sound lovely with the right person," he caressed my hair and muttered apologetically. "I’m sorry for all this complicated stuff."

"No," I raised my body quickly and shook my head, placing myself on his lap. "It’s fine, I’m just whining. I know you make it big so everyone will know that we’re married," I grasped his cheeks and stroked them. "That we truly belong to each other."

Well...I was sure it also told them that I would have some level of authority, as well as the right to Natha’s wealth, which would make my position in the Demon Realm even stronger.

But that was just a bonus, and honestly...sounded too technical to be romantic.

Natha sighed and pulled me into an embrace, whispering against the side of my head. "You’re such a blessing."

I giggled and he squeezed my cheek as if he wanted to make a play dough out of it. But his eyes turned rather sad, along with his heavy exhale.

"Ah...it becomes even harder to let you go away again," he pressed his lips on my hair. "Do you really need to go?"

So it seemed like he had yet to accept it after all.

"I promised," I hugged him tightly and sighed too. "I need to check on the spot and the fairies too."

"I know," he pulled back so he could look at me better and cupped my face.

For a while, his eyes were the only ones talking, looking at me so intensely and yet softly at the same time. Even without words, I could feel how much he loved and adored me. There was no need for me to hear any word of reassurance anymore, although...of course, it was always nice to hear his words of devotion to me.

He smiled after we spent a few minutes in blissful silence. "I can’t wait for the wedding already, and be done with this whole living separately bullshit."

Pfft--look at you; it was you who acted so nonchalant about living away from each other when we were on the tribe!
