Chapter 408: The best kind of Demon Lord is the one who looked like a Demon Lord
[And then Master go BAAM! the throne crack--and Master shout don’t lie! And then BAM! Again! Not to me!]
"I see...very energetic."
[And angry! Master is angry! Master have this face--sharp eyes! Scowling! Jade is a bit scared but Jade know Master not angry at Jade so it’s okay!]
"Valen does look scary when he’s angry, but also very pretty."
[Yes, Master is the prettiest! But listen! Listen! This is the coolest thing!]
"Oh? What is it?"
[Master say BEG! And then the witch go on her knees and cry and beg and it’s so cool, Nightmare!]
"Indeed, that sounds cool. I wish I could see it with my own eyes."
[Oh, Oh--do you want to see it, Nightmare? Jade can replay it in Jade’s mind! Nightmare can see it!]
"I’m not sure if I can, but let’s try it."
[Okay! Okay! Here we go!]
Is there...anything more embarrassing than your child retelling your hooligan adventure to your husband during a peaceful afternoon tea time? And then, again, during dinner? All I could do at this point was be thankful that no one understood what Jade was talking about.
They did see Tsalinade beg, but they didn’t need to know how I was shouting at her...right?
Ahem.
But it must be a weird sight both for those who knew who Natha was, and those who didn’t know him. A handsome man with a cold face who keenly listened to an energetically chirping chubby little ball of feathers and conversing back wasn’t something they could see every day, after all. Thanks to that, even though his inherent ’fear’ leaked out a bit, they didn’t get scared of him.
Even though it also meant a lot of people, including the servants, kept glancing at him, ugh...
See? I told those lust demons that Natha is handsome! Gorgeous!
That being said, Jade was reporting everything so excitedly that the dining room was filled with a loud chirping sound, and I had to calm the little bird for a bit. "Let’s not get too noisy during meals, okay?"
Jade gasped and covered its beak with the wings, but the Mayor and his wife shook their head. "Oh, no, no. It’s okay, Sir, we don’t mind."
"It’s been such a long time since we can hear such a cheerful chirping sound around here," the wife told us with a fond smile. "It’s very nice."
"That’s true!" Fatia, who had become a totally different person with a sudden cheerful disposition, nodded energetically in agreement. "Elemental birds should be allowed to do whatever."
Hey, that was totally a biased opinion!
When I looked at Natha to seek his counsel, he just leaned against his backrest and gave me that easy smile that told me he wouldn’t do anything and just see what I would do for fun. Tsk--this Demon Lord.
I sighed and looked down at the pair of green beady eyes that looked at me in waiting--still with wings over the beak. "No; it will make a bad precedent," I patted the green head. "Everything has its time and place, including noises. It’s fine to talk with others, but you shouldn’t scream and shout and run--fly--around during meals," I told the little bird softly, the way my grandfather used to tell me.
[Okay!] Jade chirped, and then swiftly corrected itself. [Okay...]
"Good bird," I stroked the little bird, before it giggled and flew to Natha’s shoulder again. Jade continued to make a report, but in a hush-hush manner, while Natha was feeding the little bird the said cocoa jelly bribe.
Shall I ignore the way Natha mouthed ’good boy’ at me too?
"Sounds like someone’s ready to become a parent," Zarfa commented with a wiggling eyebrow.
Cough--
"Indeed," Natha remarked calmly, and I couldn’t help the heat creeping into my face as I looked down at the black pendant.
Agh--I had been doing so good of maintaining my dignity while I was here but what is this?!
Thanks to Zarfa’s cheeky remarks, I had to eat my food while enduring the sounds of teasing giggles. Aah...I thought I would stop hearing that kind of sound after I moved out of the Lord Castle, but...
"Ugh, that Ceci--it was such an unnecessary comment!" I grumbled when we got back to our assigned bedroom.
"But she didn’t say anything wrong, no?" Natha smiled and replied easily, even when I glared at him. "You did it well; the brat did become a bit too noisy earlier."
[Jade already said Jade not a brat!] the little bird kicked Natha’s shoulder, already back at bickering even though they looked so chummy earlier talking about me--hmph. [But...Jade is noisy earlier, so Jade is sorry...]
"It’s fine, you just need to remember it for next time," I took Jade from Natha’s shoulder and squeezed the chubby cheeks.
"Hmm, hmm...what a good father indeed," Natha nodded, and I slapped his arm in response. But of course, Natha only laughed and pointed at the black pendant instead. "As good parents, should we feed our child now? Or would you rather wait until tomorrow?"
How unfair! I couldn’t stay mad when he said ’our child’ in that tone, could I? Huff...
"No, let’s do it now," I shook my head. "I will need full stamina tomorrow for the purification after all."
And it would be better to use up my mana now. That way, I would be able to regenerate it during sleep for the purification later. Quickly, I changed into my nightshirt and took Shwa out of the pendant on the bed while Natha braided my hair.
Aah...it was nice to have someone familiar doing it again.
The moment I took it out, the seed buzzed impatiently. "I know, I know...I’m sorry for making you wait for so long, okay?"
I didn’t want to let Shwa out in a foreign place when Natha wasn’t here for extra security, so the child had been confined inside all the time. Some petals from the flower that Jade and Zarfa gave me yesterday morning fell out of the pendant as I moved Shwa, and Jade rolled around above it after greeting Shwa cheerfully.
[Shwa! Shwa! Do you also see what Master did? Master is cool, right? Or should Jade tell you all about it?]
"Why do you like talking about it so much?" I chuckled and poked the little bird’s stomach.
"Because it’s a good story," Ignis replied from above the fireplace. "I’ll make sure to remember it for my next reincarnation."
Uhh...leave out the part where I acted like a blackmailing thug from your future self, please.
Buzzz!
Shwa vibrated beneath my palms then, and Jade giggled again. [See...but...talk again]
I gasped. Jade gasped. Ignis flicked its tail in surprise. It had been so long since Shwa responded with words instead of mere vibrations. The voice was getting smaller and fainter than before, but it was there!
"Looking at your face, it seems like it talks?"
"Yes!" I hoisted the big seed up and hugged it, pressing my cheek on the patterned surface. "Oh, it’s been so long. I missed your voice so much!"
[Shwa talk! Shwa talk! Jade can hear it too!]
The seed buzzed again, and I hugged it even tighter, my sweet flower bud child. It was rather worrying that the voice became fainter, but at least...Shwa managed to convey something with words! It meant we still had some room to breathe before I created a proper vessel inside.
"Hmm...but I still couldn’t hear it..."
Natha said quietly behind me, and...was he sulking? I laughed and patted my hornless Demon Lord, bringing his hand forward so we could stroke Shwa together. "Just you wait, okay? We’ll get you a body so you can be born properly," I whispered to the seed of our child. "That way, Natha will be able to hear you too."
Shwa buzzed again and Natha gave me a peck on my cheek. "Alright, let’s do this," he said and unhesitatingly released his mana through my hand.
I was slightly worried before, because it might make the Regent recognize a demon’s mana signature being released. But Shwa immediately absorbed anything, so even people who stood outside the bed wouldn’t be able to notice. What a good child. This good child even held back from absorbing too much mana this time, despite starving for three days already. It seemed like it knew I had to preserve my energy for tomorrow, so it ended quicker than usual.
Shwa let out another buzz before staying still after the feeding session ended. I kissed it goodnight and returned it to the dimensional cradle, making a mental note to put more flowers inside tomorrow.
"Aah..." I let out a satisfied sigh and lay on my back. A job well done and my favorite people all around me.
What a nice notion to end the day.
Jade chirped and jumped onto my pillow, which was quite weird since Natha was here. But he didn’t say anything or try to make Jade leave the room. He just climbed up to the bed and lay beside me as usual. When I kept looking at him blankly, he rolled to his side and smiled.
"Why?"
I blinked and, as I clutched Jade, whispered. "Can’t you...turn back?"
He raised his brow. "Now?"
I nodded wordlessly, and Natha raised his hand to erect a protective barrier around the room. Only after we were completely shielded that he undo his disguise. A blue spot appeared on his cheek and spread all over his body; a pair of horns sprouted between the hair that was getting longer; intricate patterns danced and curled all over his blue skin; and his sclera darkened like the night, welcoming the moonlight iris.
I reached out and touched his cheek, feeling the familiar cold spreading through my fingers. Jade followed me and touched Natha with its wing.
[Mm! This Nightmare is better Nightmare!]
Yes. I covered Jade’s eyes and shifted closer to kiss Natha, savoring the cold lips and stroking the textured skin on his neck.
"Are you satisfied now?" he whispered against my lips, a gleeful smile adorning his face and making his eyes gleam beautifully in the dim room.
"Yes."
Yes. This is my Demon Lord. Finally.
