Chapter 381: Well I’m sorry if I’m not as ruthless as a real mafia boss!
Chapter 381: Well I’m sorry if I’m not as ruthless as a real mafia boss!
I chuckled and slapped his arm playfully. "Why would you barge in your own home?"
"For dramatic effect," he shrugged, before giving me a short, soft kiss on my cheek.
"Oh, my Goddess!"
Natha frowned slightly when he heard Zarfa’s surprised voice. She looked at Natha with parted lips and hands on her cheeks.
"Oh, my Goddess--you are really Doc Nathanael!"
Natha tilted his head slightly at the sight of the girl, before making a pondering face. "Ah, you’re that girl--what’s your name again? Something with a C..."
"Cecilia," I told him.
"Right," he nodded. "So you really are her," he glanced at me with a smile on his face, stroking my grinning cheek.
But that was the end of his gentleness. The moment he looked at the Hero and his companions, the silver eyes were akin to a blizzard, and his hold on my waist tightened slightly.
"Your guests seem...cozy," he said coldly, returning the tension to the humans, who were immediately in their defensive stance. I could see the young paladin reached out for the group’s storage pouch too.
Haa...after I tried my best to lighten the mood.
See? It was better to call him after the meal.
"Nat..." I patted his chest lightly. "We’ve talked, it’s okay."
"Did you?" he raised his brow. "Did they ask for your forgiveness for trespassing on your home?"
Oh...did they? I did not remember.
But I didn’t have to, because the elementalist, Fatia, took it upon herself to step up and bow deeply--not out of courtesy, but the same sincerity she used when she kneeled in front of me. "Pardon me, my Lord, I don’t think we have. Please allow me to apologize for our transgression and thank you for your magnanimity and the hospitality you have shown."
Following Fatia’s example, Zarfa and Aina also bent their waist to bow, and the elementalist grabbed the Hero and the young paladin to follow her awkwardly.
I glanced at Natha--what was the point of saying this is my house when he came and acted like the boss owner? I just smiled softly and held his hand, holding myself back from shaking my head or rolling my eyes.
"It’s my bride who decided to accept your transgression in the home I built for him, so it’s him you should address your gratitude to," Natha did not let them off easy at all.
"She did that enough already," I rubbed his hand with my thumb. "She kneeled and all."
"Is that so?" Natha tilted his head, brow arched slightly in amusement while staring at the elementalist. "Hmm, not bad."
Pfft--I couldn’t help but chuckle as the cold in his eyes melted a little bit. Ju~ust a little bit. "I think that’s enough for now, isn’t it? I’m sure we are all exhausted, so let’s continue our talk tomorrow."
Fatia looked relieved. I knew that for her, my opinion would be everything. I am the druid, I am the one who was essential for her cause. It was rather funny because I thought the Hero would be the one who decided everything, but...it seemed like he had yet to establish his authority among his companions. Maybe because this was more diplomatic than battle stuff.
I could see the Hero was staring keenly at Natha, though. Perhaps he was gauging my Demon Lord’s power? After all, I told him that he wouldn’t be able to win against Natha with the strength he had now.
But that wasn’t my problem. Honestly, the Hero’s mission had nothing to do with me. "We’ve prepared your room, so you can follow the servants," I told them, gesturing toward the golems who had been waiting near the door. I glanced at the Hero and the young paladin--who still looked at me with dubious gaze--and added. "Don’t worry, we won’t attack you in your sleep or something."
Zarfa giggled in response and made a little wave at me, before taking Aina’s and Fatia’s arms, dragging them toward the door while yawning. The hard-headed paladin followed the girl swiftly as if worried that the golems would kidnap them or something. The Hero moved the last, looking at me for a few seconds before bowing his head slightly and following the rest out.
Only after they all left the room did I pull Natha toward the door. "Let’s go, I’ll tell you all about it."
"All," Natha repeated, the short syllable sounded like a warning.
"Yes, yes--I’ll tell you everything, okay?" I laughed and shrieked a little bit when Natha scooped me up into his arms, carrying me toward the stairs like always. I giggled and belatedly realized that the humans were still in the hallway. Feeling embarrassed, I hid behind Natha’s shoulder and waved at my laughing friend. "Goodnight Ceci--I mean, Zarfa..."
"Goodnight, Val."
* * *
"I did good, right?"
I sat on the bed and had my hands on my waist proudly after telling Natha everything that happened last night. My plan of making a report last night had to be delayed because Natha told me it was too late already and I needed my good night’s sleep.
At that time, I was kind of worried he got pissed or something because he didn’t even ask for a cuddly session, nor did he give me a long kiss. But I woke up in his tight embrace the next morning, so I knew he wasn’t angry.
He did not reply immediately, though, only observing my face while propping his head against the pile of pillows. So I repeated my question, because I personally thought I did good last night.
"Hmm...I don’t know," he finally graced me with his voice as he brushed my hair away from my face. "I think you’re being too soft."
"Too soft? What do you mean ’too soft’?" I rolled my eyes. "The whole purpose of this is to prevent anyone from getting hurt!"
Natha responded to my defense with a sigh. I could feel that he was rather pissed now--even though it wasn’t toward me. "What’s wrong with treating people who were rude to you a bit harshly?" he frowned, the tone making me retreat slightly because it felt like he was scolding me. "I don’t think a splash of cold water is enough as a punishment."
"I...it’s not just a splash," I pursed my lips and fiddled with the blanket between us. "It’s a lot of splashes."
I was pretty sure Jade was vicious enough to make everyone drenched, especially the young paladin. I didn’t think he even had the time to breathe during the barrage of waterballs shooting.
But of course, Natha only scoffed in dissatisfaction. "What did it do except for making them wet?"
"Hey--don’t you know how uncomfortable it is to be wet during winter night?"
"Didn’t you dry them immediately after?"
"That’s--uhh..."
Whelp. I was out of arguments, so I just covered myself with the blanket and dove to his side, hiding my face. I could hear the sound of his sigh before his cold hand patting my curled-up body. Only then did I peek out beneath the blanket and grin.
"Hehe..."
He shook his head and sighed, pulling me out of the blanket until I was in his arms again. Letting out another sigh, he complained while caressing my hair. "Sweetheart, I have never heard someone treating people who barged into their home uninvited to steal something with a feast and warm bedrooms."
"...I’m not like other people?" I tilted my head, and he closed his eyes in exasperation before smiling in defeat.
"That you are."
I chuckled and stroked the faint stubble along his jaw. "It’s fine, isn’t it?" pulling myself up slightly, I looked into his eyes and lowered my voice to a whisper. "The more I treat them kindly, the guiltier they’ll become."
This time, one of his brows arched, and I added while curling my eyes.
"For righteous people like them, isn’t that a more agonizing punishment?"
"Hmm..."
"Hmm?"
"I don’t whether you are gaslighting them or gaslighting me," he narrowed his eyes.
I laughed and kissed his cheek lightly. "How do you even know that phrase?"
"Two months is enough to catch that kind of thing."
Again, I couldn’t help but laugh and peppered his face with kisses. When I was done, I sat on his stomach and looked at his face keenly. "Don’t be so cynical, my Lord. You act like you’re jealous."
I had thought he would scoff and dismiss my words immediately, but he just looked at me with a serious gaze that made me nervous.
"What?" I blinked and tilted my head in confusion. "Wait--you’re jealous? Of what?"
What was there to be jealous about? He couldn’t be jealous of Ceci, right? As for the others...what? I didn’t think I put too much emphasis on any of them.
"No, I’m not jealous," he finally replied while playing with my hair.
"Then--"
"I just don’t like it when someone else is eyeing my betrothed," the silver eyes flicked up, looking at me with a glint of possessiveness that was often there when I talked about the humans.
But...I thought I already established that my home was in this place? I told him already that I did not care much about those humans if it wasn’t for the existence of my friend whom I owed for the information which brought me to Natha.
So I was confused.
"Huh? What are you talking about?"
The silver eyes kept looking at me deeply, watching my face keenly as if they were trying to decode some deception. "Never mind," he shook his head in the end and held my waist as he raised himself to sit on the bed. "I know you’re a dense one."
"Huh? Huh? What? What are you talking about? Who--"
Instead of an answer, what I got was a kiss. Not that I hated it, but it felt itchy when my curiosity was being neglected. "Nat!" I smacked his shoulder and pushed him away briefly, only to be tackled to the bed again.
Well...I guessed I wouldn’t get any answer until later.
