Chapter 370: Wedding seems to be more tiring than fun

"You’ve heard of it, right?"

I laughed when Natha came not with his usual sweet smile, but with stiff lips and darkened eyes. I knew he would be in a strange mood, so I already asked Zia to take Jade away from me.

Well, from us.

Natha arrived at the balcony, as if already planned to not let other people disturb us. Not for any naughty stuff, mind you, but because there were a lot of things we needed to talk about--just between the two of us.

The main topic, of course, was the humans’ arrival.

Before he could say anything, I put my fingers on his lips, and looked into his eyes. "Will you let me speak first?"

He closed his eyes in silence for a few seconds, before letting out a sigh between my fingers. "Alright."

I pulled his arms toward the sofa bed on the balcony. I had asked Angwi to prepare teas and finger foods that Natha liked to accompany our talk, although I had no idea if we would have the chance to consume them.

Anyway, I held his hands and started to speak after calming my heart. "I don’t want you to see this the wrong way, but...I don’t want you to be here at the exact time of their arrival--just!" I gripped his hands tighter and raised my voice a tad bit when his brows dipped. "Just at the start."

Fortunately, he still remembered that I asked him to listen to me first, so he didn’t say anything despite his face getting more tense, and just let me continue.

"I told you I want to talk to them, and I’m afraid they will be too...afraid, or something. Agitated, you know?" I smiled wryly.

Of course, I knew the humans were here because they wanted to meet Natha, but I was also afraid they prepared themselves for confrontation.

"I just...don’t want this place to get harmed before we could talk."

"Hmm..."

He still didn’t look pleased, so I added again. "Once I’m sure we can talk nicely, I’ll call you right away, okay? Just give me...I don’t know...an hour or two."

When he heard I only wanted him to stay away for an hour or two, his frown lessened, although it didn’t go away completely. I shifted closer and intertwined our fingers.

"Why are you so worried? Everyone will be on standby, Jade and Ignis will be in the room with me too. Also, Haikal said I’m stronger than him," I bragged a little bit.

But it was at this point that Natha finally couldn’t hold back anymore and spoke. "I don’t doubt your power, sweetheart," he said, accompanying it with a long sigh.

"Then why?"

He pulled his hand off my hold, and softly caressed my face. "Because you never hurt other people, sweetheart. Not with your own hand."

I pulled my head back and looked at him inquisitively.

"Sweetheart, sparring with people you know wouldn’t mortally harm you while there’s a healer is different from having the heart to hurt others," he continued. "And you might have Valmeier’s memory of the war, but you..." Natha took a deep breath and stroked my cheek. "You’re trembling at the thought of hurting a lot of people with your weapon. You couldn’t even bear the thought of stabbing me with your spear."

"But--" I pursed my lips and pondered. "I...I was going to stab that incubus..."

"Are you really?"

I couldn’t answer, not really. He sighed and pulled me into his embrace, prompting me to sit on his lap. "You can’t," he whispered. "Your heart is much too beautiful to hurt others."

I didn’t think so, but he was right about me being reluctant to...well, let’s just say to stab a flesh with my own hand.

"So you see...you might be strong," he said. "But I don’t think you will be able to use it for anything other than defense."

I laid my head on his shoulder and sighed. "Okay, I understand your concern now," my fingers found his green pendant and fiddled with it. "Is that why you always put guards around me?"

"Isn’t that only natural?" he chuckled, lifting my face by the chin and kissing my lips briefly. "But I’m willing to...hold back for that ’one hour or two’."

I raised my head and widened my eyes, feeling my lips stretching wide. "Really?"

"You might not be able to attack anyone with your own hand, but you have quite feisty companions," he said. "That brat even dared to attack me, so it won’t be surprising if it does it to others."

"Hey--I don’t want any attacking happen from anyone!" I smacked his upper arms, although I couldn’t help but laugh too. "At any rate, I want everything to go as peacefully as possible."

"It’ll be peaceful if we just subdue them," Natha shrugged, and I smacked him again, causing him to laugh while hugging me tight. We fell onto the sofa bed and I spent the time lying on his shoulder, watching the sky getting darker.

Before realizing it, I let out a long sigh and curled my body on his side as my mind fell into a daze. "Huff--let’s not talk about this," I shifted my head slightly to nuzzle on his neck. "It’s been a while since we just talked about us."

"About us, huh..." Natha chuckled and caressed my hair. "What do you want to talk about?"

"...I don’t know," I admitted as my mind drew a blank.

His laughter filled the balcony, and in the end, I just asked him about what I should do during our wedding banquet. I’m sorry--banquets. But he gave me a piece of very welcoming news that we just needed to be there for an hour or two--pfft--to greet the guests, and when the food started to be served, we could go back to our room to rest; because clearly, we had to do it again the next day.

"Oh, but we might need to dance a little bit," he said, and I was so startled that I raised my head so fast I headbutted his jaw.

"Ouch--ugh, what dance?!"

He pressed his lips to stifle both laughter and groan, rubbing his chin and stroking my head at the same time. "Just a little dance to open the banquet."

"I’ve never heard of this!" I clasped both sides of my face. "Why is no one told me about this?!"

"Oh, don’t worry," Natha smiled and patted my throbbing head. "You just need to hold on to me. It’s not like it’ll be the first time we dance."

"But--" I recalled all the times we danced--which was only thrice, if I recalled correctly. Twice we did it in the sky, and once in the oasis. None of it was in a formal setting. "You can’t call that a dance!"

"No?" he tilted his head and curled his lips. "That’s the dance I want to do with you," slowly, he raised his body and leaned closer to me, looking straight into my eyes. "A dance where it’ll feel like nothing but us existed in this world."

I knew my face must have been red before I could even feel the heat. "That’s easy for you to say. I would be too nervous of people’s eyes at that time..."

"Then I’ll make sure you can only see me and nothing else," he whispered, before planting a soft, sweet kiss on my lips. "Just follow my lead, and rely on me, yeah?"

Hmm...was this because I decided to face the humans by myself and not bring him into it until later? I looked at him suspiciously and pinched his cheek, stretching out his smile wider.

"Anything more I should know?" I asked with a sigh, pulling away from him to get a cup of tea. I took the teapot perching over a heating stone and poured the content into two cups. "I’m tired of being surprised bit by bit. Just surprised me all at once."

He chuckled and received the cup I gave him, which he sipped slowly while pondering. Just like me, he was probably unaware of everything that would happen during the wedding. But he met the twins on a daily basis, so he must at least know a bit more than me.

"Hmm...have you heard about the parade?"

"Fu--" I stopped myself from cursing--because the tea was hot, don’t misunderstand--and looked at him after taking a deep breath. "No. What parade?"

He smiled wryly and put his cup down, before shifting closer to me. "On the third day--the day before the second banquet, we will be riding an open carriage through Alveitya--you know, just like the autumn tour?"

My sigh slipped before I could prevent it.

"It’s because the people need to see the new Lord Consort," Natha said with a sweet, gentle smile as if he wanted to pacify me. "The only time they saw you was during the trial, and it was only from afar. They need to see it clearly; the only person their Lord is afraid of."

His last statement made my mind go blank for a second. As I blinked slowly at him, the cold fingers took my hand and brought it to his lips.

"Don’t be so surprised," he whispered. "You know my fear lay with you."

Ah...

I...I do know that all of his fears were related to me; fear of losing me, fear of hurting me, fear of losing himself because I wouldn’t be there to stop him...

"It doesn’t sound so bad..." I bit my lips and returned his gaze bashfully.

Natha chuckled and kissed the rune on my finger again. "Besides, if it’s about surprise, you’ll probably give me the biggest surprise during the ceremony," he suddenly said after pulling his head back.

"What do you mean?"

"Don’t you know, sweetheart?" he looked at me, up and down, before ending his gaze on my face. "I am not allowed to see your wedding outfits until the day you’re wearing it," he curled his lips, and leaned down to whisper in my ear. "Including what you’ll be wearing beneath."

There’s...there’s something different I’ll be wearing inside?! I looked at him incredulously, and he just smirked with silver eyes curling mischievously, tempting me to smack him again.
