Chapter 350: There’s no such thing as too much proposal
"Vrida!"
[Vrida!]
Both of us threw ourselves and hugged the wyvern’s neck. Vrida, the sweet girl, purred softly and enveloped us with its right wing.
"Have you been good? Have you eaten your breakfast?" I stroked her snout and looked into its yellow eyes, which were blinking softly.
"Don’t worry, Young Master. She’s a disciplined girl," the keeper said, patting the side of Vrida’s stomach.
"Good girl!" I stroked both sides of her cheek one last time before retreating toward the edge of Vrida’s nest.
Vrida’s nest was made of vines, woods, and river stones; an open dome structure like the Temple--probably because Vrida’s old Nest in the Castle was not far from it. From the edge of the nest, I could look at the ravine below; a blue stream around five meters wide and three meters deep.
Probably enough for a small boat, right?
As I sat on a boulder to watch the stream, Vrida shifted and laid its head beside me so I could stroke its head. "Vrida, someone--well, some people, more likely--would come to the Lair through this place," I told her. "I don’t know when exactly, but maybe in twenty days."
I drew the number twenty on the ground with a stick and made twenty scratches below it. "If you saw them, don’t do anything," I patted her snout again. "Just let them pass, but be vigilant. If they do anything to hurt you, then you might retaliate--but otherwise, don’t do anything."
Vrida let out a deep growl that Jade translated for me. [Vrida asked if they are dangerous, Master]
Hmm...they were definitely dangerous, the way Natha was dangerous to his enemy and I was dangerous to myself. The Hero was supposed to be powerful after all, and his companions shouldn’t be too far behind.
But whether or not they were dangerous to us, well...that remained to be seen.
"They don’t mean harm, I supposed..." I pondered. "But who knows, they could be naughty."
Vrida let out a sharp exhale that suspiciously sounded like a scoff, and I couldn’t help but laugh at that. "Don’t worry--if they’re naughty, you may kick their asses."
Only then that Vrida purred in satisfaction, and continued to sunbathe beside me with closed eyes. "I’m sorry that I couldn’t train while riding you yesterday. Turned out I’m not good enough yet," I let out a sigh and leaned against her. "How do you find it here, Vrida? Do you like this place?"
Vrida purred softly, and the keeper added further. "She likes it better here, Young Master," she said. "The air is better, and she can fly around more freely as there are more places to land. She also can see you anytime."
Ah...was that why Vrida liked to sunbathe in the bluegrass field? Because she could look at my balcony from there?
"What a sweet girl," I chuckled and stroked her jaw, before glancing at the keeper. "What about you Gaela? Do you like it here?"
"If I have to be honest, Young Master, I would prefer to stay here rather than in the Castle," she said, and we chuckled afterward.
Well, I guessed it would be nicer for an adventurous girl like her. Staying in the city was probably boring.
"I’m glad that you’re comfortable," I patted Vrida for the last time and stood up as my ears perked and my eyes shifted to the direction of the Tower. "Let’s fly together tomorrow, okay? We’ll follow the river down there."
Vrida purred and nuzzled my side gently, while Jade rolled around between the wyvern’s horn. [Jade play with Vrida]
Pfft--just say you don’t want to see him. "You do that," I patted the little bird and bid farewell to the keeper, before running out of the forest.
Crossing the bluish grass field, I ran toward the garden, and couldn’t help but throw myself to a pair of awaiting cold arms. "Nat!"
He caught me easily as I clutched him tightly, burying my face on his neck and letting his dark hair tickle my cheek. "I’ve missed you!"
"I’m glad you do," he chuckled and held me tightly, even lifting me so I was snug in his arms, being carried like a child. "I started to think you might forget me after starting your lesson."
"How could I?" I slapped his shoulder as he carried me toward the garden’s maze. "It’s your fault that I’m doing so bad at it!"
Natha raised his brow in confusion. "My fault? What did I do?"
"It’s because I kept thinking of you that I can’t make my mind stay still," I huffed and pursed my lips in annoyance. "Every time I was training, I thought of you and my mind instantly wandered to where you were, so even though my consciousness was supposed to stay, it started to head toward the Lord Castle!"
Haa...truly, it was so frustrating. So much so that even though I knew it was my own fault, I became annoyed at Natha too. And now he didn’t even say anything.
"Why are you being silent?" I pinched his cheek, but he only stopped and looked at me silently. "What?"
Instead of answering me, he put me gently on the swing in the middle of the maze, and, to my surprise, got on his knees.
"What are you doing?" I asked with widened eyes, but he just took my hands and brought them to his face--or rather, he buried his face in them. I could feel him breathing deeply, as if inhaling my scent, and only got more confused as time passed by for a minute like that. "Nat?"
"My God, sweetheart; I love you so much," he confessed suddenly, lifting his face at last. And what I saw wasn’t his usual calm and nonchalant expression, but knitted brows and stormy eyes. "I would have kissed you, but I don’t think I can hold myself back."
My brows furrowed this time, and I leaned forward to press my lips on his before he could do anything else. "That’s unfair! I want to kiss you. How could you not kiss me after not seeing me for days?"
He stared at me deeply, and before I knew it, my back had touched the swing, and his hands were grasping my face tightly. The kiss he gave me was the kind that he would only give inside the bedroom, not outside in broad daylight like this--and Mother, it made my heart beat like crazy.
But it seemed like he lied about not being able to hold back, because he soon stopped the kiss the moment we could feel the arousal spiking. Tsk.
"Haa...this isn’t good," he slid down and laid his head on my lap. "Being away from you for too long isn’t good."
"I know, right?" I wholeheartedly agree.
"Even though I’m happy that it makes you keep thinking about me, I’d rather just stay in a distance where I can sense your presence," he let out a long, defeated sigh that he would never show in front of his subordinates.
I stroked his hair, making sure to be careful with his horns. I was no longer crying myself to sleep these days, but still...I would prefer it if I could see him when I woke up in the middle of the night.
Huu...I took a deep breath and told myself that this was a test. That it was good for us later, after we got married, because it made us realize we truly couldn’t live without each other.
"Nat, you said the bride is usually given time to rethink their decision before the day of the wedding, right?"
Natha lifted his head swiftly at my words, and I could see the concern written all over the place. So I added swiftly to not make him worry. "During these past weeks, I truly realize that there’s no way I will give you any other answer," I told him, holding his face firmly. "There’s no way I would do that, when I can’t even wait to live with you forever."
Immediately, his face was filled with relief; his knitted brows loosened and his tight lips relaxed. It felt good, witnessing this plethora of emotions that he showed--not just to me, but about me. Only if it was something about me.
How could I ever doubt his love for me? How could I ever think that he might abandon me one day?
Oh, what a foolish thought to entertain, Valen.
Once again, I lowered my head and kissed him softly, lightly on the lips. "Thank you, Nat...for waiting for me..." I whispered.
I knew it was probably something that I was supposed to say in my wedding vow, but it was also something that I didn’t want anyone else to know. Because it was ours. It was us. It could only be conveyed between us.
"Thank you for not giving up for all those years, for keeping me in your heart even with all the uncertainties," I pressed my forehead against his. "Thank you...for working so hard for me."
My voice dwindled in the end, but even if I whispered so quietly, I knew Natha would be able to hear me. And I knew he heard me, because he grasped my hands and brought them to his lips again, kissing every knuckle and letting his lips rest over the mark that he gave me.
"I want to propose to you all over again," he said, with a restrained voice that sounded so melodious in my ears.
"Then do it again."
He looked up and finally smiled, the silver eyes reflecting the warm sunlight that wanted to welcome the nearing spring. "I will marry you," he stated rather than proposed. "Even if the world burns, I will marry you and bind us in eternal vow."
And once again, I answered without hesitation. "Yes."
