Chapter 339: Clingy Demon Lord is a cute Demon Lord
"Zia, can you go to the tower first and drag Izzi out of his lab? I’ll take the letters from Natha’s office," I told the succubus as we walked through the Castle’s hall. "Jade, go with her."
The little bird gasped in disappointment. [But Jade want to ask for Jade’s room!]
"I’ll ask him for you," I stroked the protesting little bird. "I’ll ask for a better room than the one here, how about that?"
Zia laughed and pulled Jade into her arms. "Come with me, Jade. I need help to pull out that elf from his room!"
Jade still chirped dejectedly, but Zia pulled the little bird away and gave me a cheeky wink. This succubus. I owe you one.
While Zia was birdsitting Jade, I skipped through the hall toward Natha’s office. It was only a few days, but the black pillars and the polished stone wall already felt nostalgic. I got to greet the servants and Castle staff that manned the central building on my way over, and the cooks gave me freshly baked cookies when I cut through the pantry. They were gone by the time I arrived at the office, however, the last piece slid down my throat as I peeked into the slightly opened door.
"Just come in, sweetheart," Natha’s voice greeted me before anything else, the words came out before my hair even crossed the threshold.
Natha was on his couch, signing something on a document before giving it to Malta. "You may go," he said, to which Malta and his other secretaries responded with a deep bow. They greeted me and gave me a smile on their way out--even Malta, who closed the door carefully behind me.
I glanced at the Demon Lord, who was now lounging casually on the couch, one arm slung over the armrest, and another one loosening the button on his neck. The silver eyes that looked at me were gleaming, easily inviting me to come closer.
Of course, I had no reason to refuse.
Without being able to suppress my giggling, I strolled toward the armchair and climbed into his lap without hesitation, pressing my lips on his as a greeting. When I pulled away, his cold hand pressed my head forward, preventing me from getting away.
"You taste sweet," he whispered, hand still firmly on my nape.
"I get some cookies on the way," I laughed, slipping my arms around his neck. "I missed you."
"Says the one only coming here to fetch some letters."
I tilted my head, looking at his narrowed eyes. "Are you sulking?" my brows raised. "I’m going to come here tomorrow anyway."
"For your lesson?"
"Well..."
His eyes squinted even more, and I quickly buried my face in the crook of his neck to hide my twitching lips. Oh, Mother--he was sulking! I wanted to smile and dance around the room!
It took me a few minutes to gather my composure and fix my face, before pulling away to face him with a smile and a genuine reason. "I’m afraid I won’t be able to lie..." I told him. "You know...when Amarein come next week? You know I can’t hide things in my face."
"Hmm..." he stroked my cheek with the back of his fingers as he made a pondering face. "Well, that’s true."
"Also..." I fiddled with his collar. "I’m worried that...I won’t be able to get used to it..."
I could just cross the portal and spend my day in the Lord Castle, but...I knew if I did that, I would come back feeling sad and dejected and spend the night crying again. I had managed to stop shedding tears last night, although I still needed to hug Jade to sleep.
"Alright," his lips finally stretched out, just a little bit. "Kiss me again and I’ll call it even."
Gladly! I kissed him with a laugh, and parted a few minutes later with a whimper. I had to stop him before my body got too excited and we ended up defiling his workspace.
"Fine, let’s get those letters, then."
Natha pulled away from me while speaking in a tone that I could only infer as sulky, and it was more adorable than scary, honestly. Asking him to show what was inside his heart more was definitely worth it! I laughed and kissed his cheek as he flicked his fingers, moving two letters from his desk to his hand.
The letters looked different at first glance, and I could instantly tell which was which. One of them had an envelope made of shimmering paper that would show gold emboss if we moved it beneath the light. The seal on it was gold--not just gold; it was infused with gold powder, almost like bragging. Very pretty, though, I had to admit, which easily told me it was from Sarteriel--from Issa, most likely.
The other envelope was bigger and thicker. The envelope was sturdy, and I could see there was another envelope inside--the cause of the thickness. Rather than on the envelope, the seal was used on the cord tying the letter.
My fingers were tingling, itching to open the envelope right then and there. But I held back and took the two letters carefully, putting them inside my coat. I turned toward Natha and kissed him again. "Shall we have tea at the greenhouse later?"
Natha tilted his head. "You asked me?"
I giggled against his lips before jumping off his lap. If I spent more time here, I would probably end up never leaving his side until dinnertime. Unfortunately, I had a letter to send and--probably--an agitated elf in the tower, so I had to leave my Demon Lord’s side.
I stood up and patted my coat to smoothen any proof of my little scuffle with Natha. The sound of a clicking tongue came into my ears before a pair of cold hands on my waist. I stumbled back with a kiss on my lips, and another step accompanied by a kiss on my cheek. Each time his lips landed on a different part of my face, my legs took a step back, all the way until my back pressed against the closed door.
Hmm...it was getting dangerous. My will to leave the room dwindled with every touch of his cold lips. What snapped me back from clinging onto him was the feeling of the cold door knob poking my side.
"You’re being naughty, my Lord," I whispered.
"You say things like that is what naughty, my dear bride."
Click. I turned the doorknob and stepped back, out of the room, swallowing through my dry throat. I took a deep breath to compose my flustered heart and got ready to run away.
"Oh, by the way," I stopped and turned around again just after two steps of walking away, looking at him with a big grin on my face. "Jade wants a personal room in the Lair."
* * *
Even in the elevator climbing to the eighth floor, I still fanned my hot and flustered face. Natha had been so protective that he had to have me within eyesight, but him getting that clingy was...different.
Was this born from my request for him to be more ’honest’ too? Was my Demon Lord had been holding back all this time?
That idea just made me reddened again. Thankfully, I still remembered this was a public place, so I didn’t let out any other strange sounds other than a single sharp gasp as my heart felt like they were being assaulted by countless flaps of butterfly wings.
"That’s fast."
Zia’s comment ruined my attempt to keep a poker face. What did she think would happen? Zia grinned at my narrowed eyes, fingers over her lips as if she was thinking of scandalous things.
Hey, what about your notion of love over lust?
[Master!] Jade jumped into my embrace, looking happy that I didn’t take too long. [Jade thought Nightmare will kidnap Master for a long!]
Pfft--was that why Jade was so dejected earlier?
"I told you I’m just going to pick up the letters," I told the little bird.
I heard a clanking sound then, and some tools rolling on the floor after falling from a pair of surprised hands. "Letter? Wh--what letter?"
Izzi looked at me with widened eyes. There was an expectation there, but also fear, worry. It seemed like Zia did not tell Izzi what we were there for, just dragging him out along with his tools. I took the less luxurious letter out of my coat, placing it on the table between me and the elf.
"Well, let’s find out."
The golden eyes stared at the envelope, unblinking. Izzi did not say anything, did not move, looking almost like a statue. His silence made us silent too, just waiting for him. Even Jade only clutching me silently, feeling the invisible tension in the air.
"...you open it," Izzi said after a few minutes had passed, voice almost like a whisper.
Carefully, I slid the envelope closer and cut one side with my mana. As I peeked inside the envelope, my heart unconsciously pounded, and I wondered if it would be better for me to check for it before going there. After all, I had no idea there would be any reply to Izzi’s letter. What if there were only the report I asked about how his family was doing instead?
The first thing I saw was papers, which I presumed to be the report I asked for. Without pulling the report out, I looked further inside the envelope, and pulled out the smaller envelope that I felt from the outside earlier.
Like an automatic reaction, we leaned over the table to look at the envelope together. It was plain and sealed with wax, just a regular letter. Holding my breath, I flipped the envelope over and read the neat, cursive handwriting that spelled a single name.
Izzi’s name.
