Chapter 331: as easy as giving candy to children
Jade attacked Natha with his tiny fists because he felt my slight distress earlier, and thought that it was caused by Natha. But I could sense it was also because we were spending too long beneath that tree, and my child started to feel jealous.
But in such a nice place, no one could get angry for long. Natha threw the little boy into the lake and we ended up waging a war of waterball. Me and Jade against Natha at first, and then the fairies joined us, while Ignis was scoffing and saying that it didn’t want go join such childish activity--pfft. After finishing the camp, Ilya joined the fight, and we all attacked the lone Nightmare who accurately deflected our water balls with his own.
And then we came back to the camp all drenched from the water. But hey, it was fun!
And you know what was beat? Amarein drying us with magic instantly. Whoosh! And we were all dry. Messy from the blow of air, but there was no need to fumble with the change of clothes. Not only that, Halurean had been busy preparing our dinner while we were playing with the water, so we got spoiled with a nice, warm stew and grilled mushroom.
The tent that we used was nowhere near the luxury I experienced in the oasis. It was more cramped, just enough for two people to sleep comfortably--although I’d use it alone. But this was closer to the camping I imagined when I was still on Earth, and the way we gathered around the campfire before sleeping was so delightful that I felt rather sad when Natha told me I should go to bed.
But Jade was sleepy too, so I entered the tent with the fairies and Ignis. And what do you know? The moment I lay down inside the camp, I fell asleep before I knew it. Seemed like the journey and the emotional talk I had with Natha wore me out, because I only woke up when the sky was already bright. On my pillow, there was a little bird and three little fairies.
I scooped them in my arms and crawled out of the tent, finding Amarein sitting on the log with a warm drink in her hands, and Ignis perching on a boulder sunbathing as usual. Halurean was again cooking breakfast, but Ilya was helping him this time.
Natha was there too, mixing something in a steaming cup. His eyes flicked toward me, as if in automatic, and a smile bloomed on his lips. "Good morning sweetheart."
His greeting prompted the others to turn toward me.
"Good morning, Valen."
"Good morning, Young Master."
"Good morning..." I walked dazedly toward the log where Amarein sitting at. It was covered with a thick rug that made it more comfortable enough as a chair.
Looking at the fire, I was once again thinking about roasted marshmallows and hot chocolate, which reminded me that there was no soft candy in this world. Too bad. Jade would love it so much for the strange texture alone.
"They became close," Amarein watched the little bird and the fairies tucked in my arms. "Perhaps because they are fellow spirits."
True. Technically, Jade wasn’t a ’bird’ but a spirit, because there was nothing inside its body aside from mana core and circuits--just like spirits. I guessed, the fairies were more amiable to us because Jade was there, although I began to wonder if all spirits were gaga for sugar.
"Put them here and have your drink," Natha came to me with a pillow in one hand and a steaming mug in another. I carefully put Jade and the fairies on top of the pillow, and put the pillow atop a flat bolder next to Ignis.
With a mug in my hand, I stroke Jade’s round belly, feeling the soft feathers tickling my finger. Ruffling the green hair of the little boy was nice, but Jade was adorable in this form too, so round and fluffy. The little bird squirmed at my touch, leaning close to my fingers. Funnily enough, the fairies started to squirm too, as if mirroring their fellow spirit, huddling close to the colorful featherball.
I pondered for a few seconds before letting my curiosity win, and started to stroke the fairies too. They made a soft buzzing sound when I did it, and didn’t scoot away or anything. Pretty cute bunch. "Hmm...do you think we can ask these fairies to watch this place for us?"
"That would be best," Amarein nodded. "The point could shift anytime, especially if someone comes here and absorbs a lot of the mana."
Oh! Good thing I didn’t do that yesterday.
"Of course, I’ll come here a few times to check, but we can ask the fairies to stay on watch and report back if there’s any change," Amarein said. She paused for a few seconds, tapping her fingers to her cup in contemplation, before looking at me and Natha. "When do you plan to...proceed?"
I almost sprayed the herbal drink in my mouth, but ended up saving some grace with just a little cough. Before I could compose myself for an answer, she opened her mouth again.
"You’re not going to do it before you’re married, aren’t you?"
"Of--of course, not!" I said swiftly with a burning cheek.
Well, we did decide to do it after the wedding, regardless of the agreement with the druids. It didn’t actually matter much to us before--aside from naming technicality--but there was another thing to be considered now.
"Valen has to go through training first," Natha replied for me. "To control his mana and his body more."
"That," I gave her a sheepish grin.
"A good call," Amarein nodded in approval.
At that time, Halurean and Ilya came with our breakfast, and the smell of sweets from the sliced fruit seemed to wake Jade up, because the little bird started to twitch. A second later, the green eyes blinked open, and a second after that, Jade rolled and jumped on its feet, startling the three fairies.
They all blinked in a daze, looking at Jade in what I presumed to be a shock. After all, they didn’t see Jade’s transforming back last night. They tilted their body, poking into the little bird with their limbs. Jade just chirped in response, and it seemed like they recognized the elemental bird’s soul, because they started to buzz in delight instead of confusion. Afterward, following Jade, they looked at me with round, innocent eyes.
[Good morning, Master!]
It had been a while since I heard a chirping sound instead of a boy’s shout. "Good morning, Jade. Do you want to have breakfast too?" I stroked them again, all the fairies and ended it with Jade, who giggled at the ticklish feeling.
[Jellies!]
"Would you like to share it with the fairies?"
[Ngg...] Jade looked at the three fairies that had started to hover around again, circling the pillow. [Yes! Jade will share!]
"Good bird," I patted the green head before taking out a plateful of jelly, putting in extra for the fairies too.
They looked at the plate of jelly with intrigue; their upper body swayed in hesitation, perhaps smelling the sweet scent, but held back because the jellies looked like slimes.
Although, well...those jellies were indeed made of slimes.
But after seeing Jade jump and dive into the jellies while chirping joyfully, they inched closer and poked the jelly carefully, before taking a bit with their limb and tasting it. Again, they let out a strong buzz, before jumping into the plate just like Jade.
"It’s a bribe, huh?" Ignis remarked as it climbed onto my shoulder, and I put my finger across my lips.
"Ssh!"
I took out a fire mana stone and gave it to Ignis. As a bribe.
And the bribe went well--not the one I gave to Ignis. The fairies were very reluctant when we were about to go after dismantling the camp. They looked at me, or rather, the candy jar in my hands.
"I want you to watch this place for me," I told them, and Amarein translated it through spirit speech. "You don’t have to protect this place, but if something happens that could disturb the converging point, please relay it to the tribe."
I lifted the candy jar then, and the fairies stiffened. "I don’t know how long you have to do it, but after it’s over, I’ll give you one jar each."
The fairies jumped once, as if gasping, before buzzing so much they started to blur, and fly around in a circle that I got dizzy just by looking at them.
"Stop," I shook the jar once, and they all stopped. "Alright, listen to me," I cracked the jar open, and they stopped on their track to listen. "Remember what I said; I want you to watch this place, not protect it. So I don’t want you to get hurt in the process, okay?"
The fairies swayed from side to side, as if confused and mulling over my words. But they eventually bent their upper body, which I presumed to be their version of nodding.
"Good," I took out a normal-sized candy and gave them one each. "Here’s your downpayment."
They buzzed again and hugged the candy with their limbs. It seemed like they understood that they wouldn’t get it again until I came back, so they wanted to save the candy and savored it little by little. They flew toward the island in the middle of the lake, and proceeded to make their nest there.
Heh. Never thought that handling fairies would be this easy.
"Alright, let’s get back!" I stretched out to get ready for another long journey home, but Natha seemed a bit distracted, staring in a direction with darkened eyes--a sign of him concentrating on his thoughts reading. I slipped my hand on his, calling him carefully. "Nat? Is something wrong?"
He blinked then, and after two seconds, shook his head. "It’s nothing," he smiled. I narrowed my eyes in suspicion, but he just stroked my cheek. "Nothing dangerous, I think."
Hmm...
Oh well, if he said so. We waved to the fairies, before heading back into the forest and set for a journey home.
