Chapter 325: When it happens so much you don’t get surprised anymore

Oh...so she died?

This wasn’t my interpreter formation’s mistake in translation, right?

I had no idea what the concept of death in the world of spirit was like, but the word ’perished’ could not be more grim. I knew this might be nothing, as I wasn’t a spirit and possessed a different physiology. But I had to say my heart stopped for a bit when I read it.

I proceeded to read more, but there was nothing more about that topic in the letter. The Queen was born as a half-druid, half-dryad, and ’enjoyed’ both of that world. She had the physique of a druid, but also could travel from tree to tree like dryad. And it seemed like she could give birth two ways--by her womb, or the dryad way--which means...I might be able to.

The dryad way, I mean, not the non-existent womb.

I asked the scribe if there was any document about dryads, but she told me that kind of information was available in the regular library, so I could read them in the Tribe Hall instead. And with that, we finished our business here.

"Do you get what you want?" Amarein asked as we walked back to the gate of the tree.

"Yeah," I said hesitatingly. Well, I did; but I had no idea what to think about it. And even more, I was afraid of Natha’s reaction. "Umm...can I consult you about the content tomorrow? There’s something I wasn’t sure about."

"Of course," Amarein nodded with a smile, just before we stepped into the gate. "Let’s talk about it in the library, while you’re looking about the dr--"

"Huh?"

I stepped into the gate expecting to see the plaza and Natha, but instead of a dark space, I was greeted by the interior of a forest, with sunlight pouring through the gap in the foliage. I blinked for a few seconds, but I had experienced this enough to no longer feel scared or even confused.

The first thing I did was look down. Oh, I wasn’t naked. Good. Once I found out I was adequately dressed in a simple brown tunic and working pants, I ran through the forest path to the familiar clearing and an ivy gate to an everlasting garden surrounding a small cabin.

There, in the garden, was a woman I had longed to see for months now. Without hesitation, I rushed over to her welcoming arms. "Mother!"

"It’s nice to see that you stay energetic," she patted my head with her callous hand. "Didn’t I say we’ll meet again?"

"Mm!"

She grabbed my shoulder and looked at me from top to bottom, as if scrutinizing my appearance. "Hmm...yes, you look better than before. Good," she nodded in satisfaction, but her deep smile gave me a bad feeling, for some reason. "Good," she repeated, taking my hand and suddenly, there was a gardening fork. "I’ll leave this section to you."

See? I gripped the handle of the small gardening fork and looked at the empty land, around three meters long and two meters wide surrounded by bricks. "Umm...what should I do?"

"Pull out the weed and loosen the soil," she said as she worked on another bigger lot. "But be careful--sometimes there’s a seed from the previous session. Just make sure not to accidentally pull that."

Feeling the hilt of the fork in my hand, I crouched in front of the lot with an excited mind from experiencing gardening for the first time. But then, as I started to drag the soil, I had a thought. "Mother, will I spend days sleeping again like the last time?"

"Oh, don’t worry," she waved her hand while throwing a pulled weed to the side. "You’re in my territory now, so I can do this without expending your time at all."

"Oh?"

"The last time, you were in An’Hyang’s territory, so I had to expand my power and use your own to call you here urgently," she explained. "But now, it’s easier because you’re inside Alzeriya."

"I see..." I nodded and continued with my forking, turning up the soil and pulling away the caught weed. "It’s just that I don’t want Natha to get worried again."

I could hear her chuckling from the side, and I got rather embarrassed, so I diverted the topic. "Umm, is there a reason why you call me here today?"

"No. Aren’t you the one with questions, child?"

Well, that’s true. I nodded without looking at her, just focusing on the lot before me so I wouldn’t accidentally kill a budding sprout. For a while, we were working in silence, enjoying the sunlight upon my back and the smell of fresh soil. Just like the coffee in Lord An’Hyang’s abode, everything felt so vivid, as if it wasn’t just my soul that got transported here.

"May I ask something?"

"I’m calling you here for that, child."

Oh, right. I sorted my mind for a bit, thinking about which question I wanted to start with. "Umm, Mother...was it you that sent Grandma to Earth?"

"Yes," the answer came easily.

"Why?"

"Because it’s the best course of action to avoid the future we had a glimpse of," she said, casually, as if we were talking about the kind of flowers that would grow better in this soil.

"The future you had a glimpse of?" I tilted my head. It wasn’t looking at the future that caught my attention, because why would I get surprised about that kind of thing when I was literally in a Goddess’s territory? But something came to my mind then, that would give light to another one of my questions. My hands halted in the air and I turned to look at her in surprise. "You mean...the dream that that girl saw? The novel? Was that the future you glimpse?"

I saw her lips curled into a beautiful smile. "You’re very quick," she said. "One of Luxera’s gifts is foresight. What transpired in that girl’s dream was what Luxera saw in hers, and one of the bitter ends was how this world started to run out of time."

"I see..." I looked down, and unfortunately, found that I didn’t have my black necklace there. "Did I do it right? I mean, looking for the dryad’s method..."

"Yes," she nodded with a brighter smile. "I’m proud that you can think about it before I have to give you any hint."

Haha...wouldn’t it be better if you deities just told us straight about it when Natha picked that seed? Like some kind of manual?

"But..." I couldn’t help the sigh coming out of my mouth as I returned to drag the soil. "I found out that the Queen’s mother died after extracting the essence, so..."

"Are you afraid, child?"

I looked at the dark brown soil, and the weeds that got strewn around, pulled by the drag of my fork. "Yeah, I’m scared," I said honestly. "I know that a mother’s sacrifice is what is beautiful about giving birth, but..." I bit my lips as I picked the weeds off the soil with my hands. "I want to live. I want to see my child be born and grow up."

"Good, that is good," she said, sounding so close all of a sudden. Startingly, I turned my head to see she was already next to me, holding my hand to halt its movement. "Be careful, my child," she cleaned the weeds from the weeds with her hands, and carefully stroked something that looked like a small pointy horn attached to the ground. "Life is precious, so it’s good that you want to keep it. And don’t worry," she smiled while patting the small sprouting seed. "You are not a dryad. A dryad’s essence works differently from a human or a druid. For dryad, their essence contained their soul, so they essentially just moved their consciousness to a new vessel."

"So...like the Salamander?"

"Ah, yes--you can see it like that," she nodded, before walking back to her own lot. "You know already what you have to do?"

"Umm...find a place where all the surrounding energy converges in one spot, under the moonlight," I recalled my conclusion.

"The moonlight is only a reflection of the sun, so you can do it under the sunlight too," she said, before glancing at me with a teasing smile. "But I don’t think you’d like going through the process in broad daylight."

I coughed and my fork stabbed the soil deeply because of that. Thankfully, no sprouting seed was harmed in the making of this conversation.

"But because you are not a dryad, the light would not bind the essences for you," she continued, ignoring my flaming face. "So you have to take care and bind them yourself, guiding the process of extracting it out of you and putting it into the seed. Everything would need to be done...how would An’Hyang say it? Manually, yes--you have to do everything manually."

Oh, okay. I had no idea how to do that, but let’s just take a mental note for now. At least, I knew that Natha wouldn’t get too cranky when I told him all about this. "Then, we only have to feed the seed with our mana?"

"Oh, no," she shook her head. "Once the demon’s essence had been bound together with yours, it would attach to you, just like how a fetus would attach to the mother."

"Oh, so...I’ll be the only source of energy?"

"Yes," she nodded, and then continued while patting the soil around a group of sprouts. "Once you put the bound essence inside the seed, you need to keep it in a safe location--not inside the cage of that dimensional storage. And you shouldn’t be away from it too much," she paused, straightened her back, and looked at me solemnly. "Just because it happens outside, you shouldn’t think of it as something separate from your body."

I blinked and nodded repeatedly in all seriousness. Okay. Just think of it as my womb...but outside. Okay. "And...the birth? How long--"

"You’ll know when the time comes," she said. There was a bit of hesitation before she opened her mouth again. "Honestly, we don’t know much after that," she stood up and sighed, cleaning her hands with bubbles of water that came out of nowhere. "It’s not something that ever happened before, and it’s not in the future that Luxera dreamt of. At least...not at that time."

Oh, right! It reminded me of something. "Umm--about that Goddess!" I sprang up to my feet, still with the fork in my hand. "Is it true that something happened to the Goddess?"
