Chapter 311: A couple always need some alone time even after they have children
How many people had eaten their dinner on top of the bridge?
A lot, probably.
But how many people had eaten their dinner on top of the suspension of the bridge? Not many, I presumed. I sure hoped so, for everyone’s sake. But I was allowed, because I did it with a winged demon that kept his hands on me all the time. Totally safe.
We bought dinner from the street vendor so it felt like a festival, and flew to the place where I could enjoy everything. Sitting on top of the bridge, we stared at the urban landscape of the city with the palace behind us. Two sun towers were on our left and right, illuminating the lake with the glowing rune and golden crystal.
Along the bridge, lamps with smaller golden crystals containing the mana from the sunlight line up like runway lights. The same lamps, scattered across the city, looked like twinkling stars in a clear night sky.
"As I thought, it’s beautiful," I sighed while munching on my skewer. "Is this why the food tastes good even though it’s a bit bland?"
"It’s not bland," Natha argued.
"Yes, yes, it’s not bland--just a bit mild for my taste."
I couldn’t help but laugh at how defensive he was of the elf’s less stimulating flavors. It was truly right up his alley, which was rare. Of course, back home, the cooks always prepared his meals the way he wanted, but despite always making sure I ate well, he had quite a hard time in Gluttony.
"You must have liked the food here," I waved the skewer in front of his face, and he bit into it in response.
"I won’t refute that," he chuckled. "And how do you like today’s tour?"
"Well, like I said, I talked to her," I shrugged, putting the skewer into a designated disposal bag that was floating in the air around us--thanks to Natha.
While eating the rest of the street food, I told him all about what happened after we parted ways, especially about my talk with Issa. I also told him about her response after that, and ended it with me questioning him whether the elves would really change.
"Who knows," Natha replied with a little sneer. "Elves are not known for their...flexibility. Just because one member of the court thinks they should revisit their view, doesn’t mean they will actually do."
"Hmm..." I sighed and grabbed a sweet juice sold in a glass bottle to soothe myself.
I had big hopes earlier, but I guess this wasn’t a fairytale where everything could be solved in one episode.
"But an avalanche started with detaching snow from its resting place, just like what you did by changing Issaelmier’s heart," Natha patted my head reassuringly. "Perhaps it wouldn’t be as fast as an avalanche, but who knows? Little by little, slowly, they might change to be less rigid."
I looked up, eyes rounded, and Natha continued with a smile. "Elves had a longer lifespan than other children of nature, so they might be slow with things. But it also means Issaelmier had a longer time to plant the idea in other elves."
"Oh...so optimistic," the grin came to my face easily. "Well, for now, I just want to make sure Izzi becomes a free man--I mean, elf."
Natha hummed and patted my waist in contemplation. "Even if the decision couldn’t be made quickly, you can ask that he’s at least be allowed to meet his family--should they want to."
"Yeah, that’s what I aim for," I nodded. "Issa promised me an answer tomorrow, and I hope it’s a good one."
"Well," Natha took the glass bottle from my hand, dropped it into the disposal bag, and stored the bag inside his storage ring so we wouldn’t litter. "I never wished for someone to be deprived of their homeland."
...oh. Sometimes, I forgot that Natha’s actual home was in the realm of Lust, even though everything had been robbed of him. I guessed he could buy his estate back, but...what was the point when people who used to live there--his people, his families--had perished in a cruel massacre?
"But let’s talk about heavy things some other time, yeah?" he pulled me up and held my waist, pulling me close to his body with one hand, while his other one held mine. "We are supposed to be having a nice date tonight."
My lips stretched wider, and I put my hand on his shoulder as a wisp of mana twirled around my body to keep me afloat. He brought me into the air, stepping off the bride. "Put your foot on mine," he whispered, and I did with a soft giggle.
We got further and further away from any surface we could step on, hovering above the dark water. Looking down, the light from the golden crystals and the glowing rune made it seem like a river of gold was flowing through a void. Mystically luxurious.
"Don’t ever let go," he whispered, holding my waist tighter as his black wings fluttered.
"Never," I tiptoed on his feet and kissed him. We kissed and he twirled me in the air, prompting the kiss to end as I couldn’t help but let out a little shriek and a lot of laugh.
He led me through a weightless dance, gliding around the bright tower that bathed us in a warm glow akin to sunlight. Countless light particles swirled around the huge golden crystal like a shower of fairy dust, drawing a line behind us as we continued to dance through the night sky with the tune of our beating hearts.
"It’s wonderful," I whispered, staring into the pair of gleaming moonlight before laying my head on the sturdy shoulder. "We should do this more often back home."
"Mm," he hummed softly, circling his arms on my waist and back. We embraced within the protection of his wings and mana, floating inside a cocoon of feathers. "You probably need to convince the brat first."
I groaned slightly. "I still had no idea how to explain marriage to Jade."
"It’s not like things will change much; we’re already living together and all," he laughed. "But you do have to talk about going away for a week after the wedding."
I lifted my head off him, blinking. "A week?"
"At least," his lips curled. "I’m not going to settle for less days."
I swallowed reflexively, remembering one aspect of our wedding that I hadn’t thought much about because it wasn’t in my hand; the mythical honeymoon. "You can afford that? Leaving the realm for more than a week?"
"It’s why I raised a band of competent subordinates," he said nonchalantly.
Well, I guessed he did have a bunch of very competent demons under him. I could already hear Lesta’s groan though, but it wasn’t my problem.
Because I already had my own problem on the horizon.
"Nat,"
"Mm?"
"At what age do people usually get married here?"
He did not answer immediately, just his hold getting slightly tighter around me. Because of my position, I could feel his entire body tensing, and when I peeked into his face, his eyes hardened slightly.
"Nat?"
He looked down and then away, before replying in a quiet voice. "Demons or druids?"
"Druids,"
I waited, counting the seconds in my mind until it hit twenty-six. "...around...late thirties, I guess..."
Oh...
A bit more than ten years, huh? This might be tough. "Do you think they’ll argue about this?"
"Probably," his reply came with a sigh. So it seemed like he had thought about it all this time.
It was indeed complicated, our circumstances. As a human, I would already in the age to have had several children by now. But as a druid, they would consider me to be in my juvenile years still; a teenager. I was sitting in the middle, so it was confusing.
Now, it probably wouldn’t be so...concerning, if Natha was in the age where he met me the first time. He was thirty back then, barely a young adult. We were basically peers when we first met; which was probably why we got along so well the first time.
But while my soul was floating in the darkness, his time flew, and nearly seven decades passed before we met again. People who didn’t know our story might look at it and think it could be problematic. And the hearsay about him ’kidnapping’ me did not help.
I doubt it would change our decision to be together and all, but I do prefer our union to be full of blessings without being marred by any conflict.
We had the last resort of telling them about the ’mission’ the Gods bestowed on us, but...
Honestly, both of us were not keen on letting people know about it. Both of us knew our feelings for each other, but we didn’t like it if people saw it as a relationship forced by divine powers.
"We just need to pull my human card, right?" I said nervously, trying to force out a smile.
"We have to," Natha said, in a rare moment of sounding rather hopeless. "I sure hope it works."
Ugh--the way he said it made me nervous. I was used to him being all prepared and sure of himself, so...
"It’s the most peaceful way I know," he added. "I don’t really want to use coercion on your kin..."
Yep. Definitely made me nervous.
