Chapter 306: We don’t need to be the same species to be families
When Irra came back, she stared dumbfoundedly at the little boy I just finished putting clothes in.
"..." she parted her lips for a long time, before realizing she was being impolite and covered her mouth.
"This is Jade," I introduce my little boy who was no longer a little bird.
"This is Jade!"
As usual, Jade introduced himself energetically and proudly. This time, I gave him a red coat with a hood, and Ignis crawled inside the hood to perch above Jade’s green hair.
"The...the elemental bird?" Irra asked with a soft gasp.
"Yes!" Jade replied with a jump, feeling happy about going around the city with me in this new form.
Also, I bet Jade was happy at Irra’s astonished reaction. The little bird had a penchant for surprising people, after all.
"You’re ready?" Natha came from behind and stroked my shoulder.
We’d be going together until the merchant guild, where Natha would make an impromptu inspection whilst I go around gallivanting around the city. Of course, Natha’s main business was buying those fish and transporting them to the land of Greed.
"Nightmare, Nightmare will buy fishes for Master?" Jade, standing on the couch so he could get higher, tugged on Natha’s sleeve.
"You can’t eat them, you know?" Natha replied with a smirk, prompting a series of small punches on his arms.
"Jade won’t eat fishes! Small fishes are friends!" the little boy protested, glaring at the Demon Lord who held his hands while chuckling.
Grabbing Jade’s side, Natha proceeded to hold the little boy while walking away. "What about the big fish, then?"
Jade, pondering about the question, was too confused to reject being carried by the ’Nightmare’ and unconsciously holding on to Natha’s shoulder while thinking deeply. "Ung...big...big fishes also friends..."
"But your Master ate big fish," Natha said teasingly.
"But...but they are not colorful!"
"They were colorful before we cooked them."
The little boy gasped and looked like his head would explode from the confusion, so I had to slap Natha’s arm to stop him. "Don’t tease him."
Natha smirked cheekily and I stroked the confused green head. "We don’t cook our friends, don’t worry," I said, feeling so dumb because I had no idea how to explain this thing. Kind of feels like discrimination if I said there was a fish we ate and a fish we pet...wasn’t it?
Ugh--this is Natha’s fault! I narrowed my eyes and pinched his side in annoyance. With a soft laugh, Natha moved the topic in another direction. "Alright, so which fish do you want to bring home?" he asked the little boy.
"Rainbow! Like Jade!"
Kind of weird hearing that in Jade’s boy form because he only had a rainbow on the edge of the green hair. But a valid choice nonetheless; I too, would like to see a rainbow-colored fish in my pond.
"What about other colors?"
"Green and brown and white!" Jade replied while looking at me. "Pink and purple and red!" Ignis flicked its tail and scoffed in satisfaction. Jade glanced toward the demo carrying him and muttered; "Blue too...maybe," he added, which put a smirk on Natha’s lips.
"You look like a family," Irra giggled softly, and Jade turned his head toward her.
"Jade is Master’s child! We are family!" the little boy announced proudly.
Well...the way Jade was basically a copy of me, I could see people thinking like that. They might think Jade was my younger brother rather than my child, but perhaps because Jade was in Natha’s arms, and the demon was my soon-to-be husband...
It made me kind of embarrassed, though--in a good way.
"Hmm...yes, we are."
Natha’s easy response surprised Jade more than anyone. "Nightmare is Jade’s family too?"
"I will become Valen’s family in a few months, so by extension, I will become your family too, no?"
"Oh..." Jade gasped at this revelation, and in turn, looked at Natha keenly, green eyes narrowed and lips pursed. "But why Nightmare so naughty to Jade?" he asked while tugging on Natha’s hair.
"Hmm...I wonder," Natha chuckled, which made the little boy confused again.
"It’s because he likes you, Jade," I sneered at the Demon Lord who was raising his brow. "He was so naughty too when he met me the first time."
Irra’s eyes widened slightly and Natha cleared his throat because of that. Heh--at least he realized. He teased me a lot in that hospital room. Of course, back then, I didn’t think he was into me; but his teasing made me pout from getting annoyed, made me lonely when he wasn’t there, made me laugh when he got flustered from me sulking, and made me fall in love in the end.
"I was young back then," he argued.
"You’re thirty," I rolled my eyes, but enjoying every second he looked flustered while mumbling that thirty was young for demons. It was such a rare moment after all--rare enough for Jade to pick up on it.
"Nightmare’s ear red," the little boy giggled, rubbing the reddened tip of Natha’s earlobe.
Hmm...isn’t it nice seeing them close like this?
Our fish conversation brought us to the carriages that had been prepared on the path outside the cabin’s area. Irra bid a temporary goodbye because she would ride in another carriage with the elf that was going to help Natha buy our fish.
The carriage was a full-frame one, but it had a nice, wide window that allowed us to see the road and the scenery easily. Jade stood in front of the window, holding onto the windowsill and jumping every time he saw something interesting. While my familiars were busy sightseeing, Natha held my hand--to be precise, the silver ring on my finger. He infused his mana inside, and the stone turned black.
"I’ll be able to know precisely where you are this way," he said, rubbing the stone.
I gasped and whispered. "Like a GPS tracker?"
"Something like that," Natha chuckled. "It will also tell me the state of your vital sign, and I’ll be able to teleport instantly to your side should anything happen."
"Hmm..."
Natha laughed and pinched my chin. "But well, it’ll need to be a disaster for anything to harm you--from the outside that it."
"Hey!"
"What? You are your biggest liability," he shrugged, which I couldn’t exactly refute because...yeah...even I knew I put myself in harm’s way more often than others were.
"Don’t worry, Nightmare; Jade will protect Master!" the little boy patted Natha with a little smug face.
Ignis, still perching on top of Jade’s head, followed with a similar smugness. "No one will be able to harm Valen with me around--not even Valen himself."
"Hey!"
"How reassuring," Natha smiled and leaned back, looking at me with an arched brow and a smirk. Cheeky.
Well, I did have some very reassuring bodyguards, although it wasn’t like the elves would let anything happen to me. In fact...I was kind of worried if something did happen, Jade and Ignis would cause a bigger mess in retaliation. After all, my familiars were pretty strong.
No; they were really strong.
As I thought about it, another strong entity buzzed inside my arm, as if upset I took it out of the equation.
Yeah, yeah--I also had a sentient Spear that could wreck my enemy by itself. I patted my arm to appease it, promising Alveitya that I would let it out sometime soon. It had been a long time since I had some exercise in the training ground, after all.
"Oh...it’s even grander when we pass beneath it," I joined Jade to watch the bridge; large and wide, made of white stones that made the reflection in the lake look ethereal.
No wonder elves had high beauty standards; they were surrounded by this kind of beauty all the time, after all. Even the sun pillar looked beautiful with a neat, single vertical column carved with spiraling rune formations that would glow in golden light.
"I think it’ll look even more beautiful during the night," I muttered with awe. I was too full last night to do anything, too burned out because the elves kept talking to me during dinner, so I went straight to bed after getting back from the palace.
"Hmm, well..." Natha took my hand and smiled against my knuckles. "We can’t have a date during the day, so why don’t we do it during the night?"
A date!
"You still owe me a nice dance, after all."
Oh...was he talking about that dance in the sky where I ended up crying? I smiled wryly and scratched my neck, feeling embarrassed at that memory. I glanced at Jade, who was talking with Ignis about who would win if they were to race to the top of the bridge. Jade always ended up sleeping from exhaustion after turning into a boy, so...
"Sure," I giggled and leaned to kiss Natha’s cheek. "Take me to the sky again."
"It’s a promise," he rubbed my cheek and pecked my lips briefly while Jade still looking out the window.
Ah...it made me want to have that date right now instead of waiting until the night.
But no--I had a mission right now, which concerned my only friend from Earth. So I patted my cheeks to resolve my determination and got ready to coax an elf out of their firm belief.
...uhh, telling it like that made it sound even harder than I had imagined.
