Chapter 295: Fast or slow, when it’s the time, then it’s the time

"Master..." when the sun climbed to the peak, Jade climbed into my lap again, laying his head on my shoulder. "Jade sleepy..."

I hugged the little boy and patted his back gently. "It’s alright, you play a lot with us today. You can have a nap,"

"But...Jade...will be bird again..."

"It’s okay," I kissed his temple and told him softly. "You’ll still be the Jade that I love."

Jade let out a soft giggling sound, and, perhaps feeling reassured, the little boy started breathing softly, steadily, as I caressed his back, singing him the lullaby my Grandma used to sing. Zia and Izzi left then, to not disturb the little boy, and a few minutes later, I could feel Jade grow slack in my arms, and the boy started to glow.

Slowly, the little human unraveled, dispersing into countless elemental mana particles that swirled around me like millions of fireflies. They gathered back on top of my palm, condensing into the form of a familiar little bird. Ignis made itself bigger and scooped Jade with its tail, putting the little bird on his back before scurrying over atop the fireplace.

What a cute bunch.

"You’ve never sung me a lullaby before," I heard Natha’s voice just as I was about to leave the living room.

"How could I sing a lullaby when I fell asleep faster than you, my Lord?" I rolled my eyes. Wait...if he heard me singing, that meant he had been here for at least a few minutes already. "When did you arrive?"

"Just in time to hear your lullaby," he smiled and gave me a soft peck on the cheek. "You should do it for me sometimes, perhaps I’ll sleep faster, then."

Should I? The thought of putting Natha to sleep first somehow excited me. I took his hand while giggling a little bit, and we headed into the dining room to have our lunch.

"So that’s what you looked like when you were a child, huh?" Natha suddenly remarked as he pulled a chair for me to sit.

"I didn’t even remember how I looked when I was a child," I laughed, remembering how there was no photo album in my hospital room. After all, a photo album wasn’t something people thought to carry when they moved to the hospital, and I had no one to bring me one of those after. Not that I have a lot of pictures in the first place. "You know, I don’t even remember what I looked like when I first arrived in this world."

"You do look so much healthier," Natha pinched my cheek, which was definitely chubbier than the time I was still sick. "And that was why the brat looked like you. If we compared the child to how you looked when you were sick, then it would be harder to see the resemblance."

Hmm...I agree. Even my eyes were dimmer from exhaustion back in the day. I was glad that Jade saw the memory when I was a child instead of when I was sick. "I think Jade managed to look into my memory because I saw that one when I transformed into water," I said. "That was when the memory about Grandma resurfaced."

"Hmm..." Natha nodded, but he fell silent after that while sipping on his water. From the way his eyes went still, it seemed like he was thinking about something rather deeply.

"What is it?" I asked when he put his glass back on the table.

"I had been wondering since morning," he said, looking at me with a deep, observing gaze.

"About?"

"What our child will look like,"

I bit into the berry I already put between my lips, but it stayed in my mouth without me having the strength to swallow it.

Honestly...I have been wondering about the same thing ever since I saw Jade this morning, especially after I knew he took the human form because Jade wanted to be my child. That being said, it was quite embarrassing having other people spell it out, making me feel like I had been caught for something.

"What...what do you think?" I asked after finally managing to swallow the berry. "What do you want Shwa to look like?"

"Honestly? I prefer them to look like you," he said, which almost made me cough. The way he said ’them’ made me think he wanted more than one child, which was...a complication in itself.

But let’s ignore that for now. "Why like me? If Shwa will take your name, wouldn’t it be better for that child to look like you?"

"Because I think they will look adorable if they look like you," he said nonchalantly.

"I think they’ll look adorable either way," I argued, secretly finding myself wanting Shwa to look like little Natha instead. Little blue demon with cute horns and round silver eyes. "Umm...do you have any pictures of your childhood?"

"No, everything got burned with the mansion during the massacre," he shook his head, and I pressed my lips; I was disappointed, but also felt guilty that he had to bring up that cruel incident because of it.

"Sorry..."

Natha patted my head and smiled at me. "It’s fine, sweetheart. Ah...perhaps my great-aunt has one? Maybe not my individual picture, but with my whole Nightmare family."

"Oh?" I perked up at this possibility, which also brought me to another thing I had been thinking about. "Hey, since we’re going to visit my kin, don’t you want to visit your great-aunt?"

I knew he said that if his aunt wanted to come, she would tell him first, but still...wasn’t she his only blood relatives left? We were going to visit the druids, who were all basically my distant distant cousins, just because they were my kin. To not tell Natha’s kin about it seemed...unsettling.

Natha leaned back and crossed his arms in contemplation. "Well...perhaps I’ll write to her after we decide on the exact date," he said finally. "That way she wouldn’t feel like the letter was a waste of time."

...I really didn’t get their relationship. But to each their own, I guess?

Anyway, I had told Natha that it was up to him to choose the date since every day was a free day for me, whose job was, to quote Natha, to ’be pampered and spend his money’. The busy one should be the one to decide. My only condition was for it to be conducted in spring.

Talking about spring...

"That would be my first spring in this world," I told him.

I was transmigrated here at the end of the fall in the human realm, but during winter, Natha took me to the demon realm, which had an opposing season--which meant I skipped the spring entirely. The first taste of spring that I got was inside D’Ara’s abode, which, technically, was more or less artificial.

"It’s kind of weird to think that my first spring would be marked by a wedding,"

"Why is it weird?"

"I mean..." I bit at my spoon and glanced at him. "I haven’t even been here for a year, and yet, I already staring at a wedding in front of my face."

I looked back at the long journey I had been through--from fumbling with my newfound second life to finding out the secret of the world and my own mystery. It didn’t feel real that all of that happened in less than a year, even when I counted the time I was still in the kingdom.

From suddenly being told I would be his bride to...really about to be his bride for real--didn’t it seem like everything happening so fast?

"But it’s not like we haven’t known each other before," Natha argued with a slight frown. He sounded as if he was afraid I was going to call it off. "And to be fair, that’s the whole reason why we’re progressing fast. If you hadn’t found out the truth, I wouldn’t have proposed at that time, I think, and..."

"...and?"

"And even if I did, you probably wouldn’t say yes," Natha said.

Ah...he was right. Had I not found the truth, I would still think he was in love with the previous me--with Valmeier. And without knowing the truth, there was a possibility that I wouldn’t be able to meet Valmeier’s soul and merge us into one. I would still drown in self-doubt and think that accepting his proposal would not be a proper thing to do.

"But you know, even if we knew each other, technically, we only talked for two months," I said teasingly, glancing at him as I drank my water.

"But we also fell in love within those two months," his frown was deeper this time, and he almost pursed his lips, which made it sound like he was sulking.

Why did I find that to be cute??

"Also, I waited for decades after that."

This time, he really was sulking; clicking his tongue and pursing his lips which prompted me to laugh and move to sit on his lap.

"Don’t sulk," I kissed his jaw, giggling slightly as he narrowed his eyes. "I’m just kidding--although I do think it’s a bit fast, but..." I took his hand and caressed the rune I put on his ring finger. "I have no intention to call it off or anything."

Natha grabbed my rubbing hand and flicked my forehead slightly. "You become better at teasing me, don’t you?"

I giggled and kissed him again, on the lips this time, before going back to my seat. "So anyway, when will we head out to Sarteriel?"

"Next week," he said, and I choked without having anything in my throat.
