Chapter 290: Didn’t know vampire marriage came with gps tracker
"Eruha! Eruha!" I opened the door to the Castle’s main office--not the Lord’s office--looking for my teacher with Zia in tow. "Is Eruha here?"
The office--which was a big lounge with several doors leading to the private offices for the vassals, several desks for the Castle’s staff, big tables for meetings, and a sitting area--was quite scant. There were only a few staff there, who immediately bowed to me.
"Sir Eruha is not here, Young Master," one of them told me, but one of the private offices opened and Lesta peeked out of the room.
"Young Master?"
"Lesta!" I greeted the demon cheerfully. If there was someone who could summon Eruha here it would be his Eternal. "Can you call Eruha here?" I asked while walking toward his room.
"Sure, but why do you want to see him suddenly?" Lesta opened the door to his office wider, and told his assistant to leave the room for a while as we stepped inside.
"I want to ask his mother something."
Lesta stiffened, blinking at me like he was just hearing a horror story. Feeling mischievous, I tilted my head and poked his arm. "Why? Are you nervous about having to meet your mother-in-law?"
"Huh? Huh? What? Did Lesta and Eruha get married? When?" Zia jumped to the other side of the demon, peering into his exasperated face.
"Something similar," I told her with a giggle, and Lesta sighed while walking to the couch. It looked more like a working desk, however, with all papers and parchments strewn around, as well as books piling up.
"Well, I won’t refute that," Lesta swiftly changed his stiffened expression, back to his usual calm self. It was kinda cool honestly, how casually he admitted that. His dark eyes flicked at me and he asked with a smile. "Wouldn’t you feel nervous if His Lordship’s parents were still around?"
Uhh...good point. "What about yours?" I asked while shoving some books aside so I could take a seat on the couch. "Have you resolved it with them?"
"Well..." he smiled wryly, eyes darting to the side. "Malta still doesn’t want to talk to me."
Yeah, I thought so. It was kind of hard to discern because Malta rarely talked anyway, but I hadn’t seen her and Lesta interact in the past week. Well, it would probably be solved with time, since they were siblings. Arta already overcome it after giving him another long sermon about familial bonds, but it was probably easier for her because she was his twin.
"Aren’t you going to call Eruha?" I got back to our original objective of coming here.
"Already did," he said, which made me and Zia look at each other because...when? How? Using what?
And as if proving his words, the door opened right on time, showing my tall, pale teacher. "What happened?" the vampire asked rather agitatedly, as if he was just receiving bad news.
Hmm...I knew the mark of eternal came with a homing beacon, but I didn’t know they could communicate long-range too...
"Young Master is looking for you," Lesta simply said, but also added after three seconds of silence from the vampire. "I’m fine."
Hmm...rather than long-range communication, it seemed to be a danger signal or something.
At least, that was my conclusion after seeing Eruha’s relieved sigh. Only then that the red eyes which reminded me of D’Ara look at me and Zia. Such an afterthought, we were.
"You’re looking for me, Young Master?" he asked while closing the door behind him.
"Yeah, I want to contact D’Ara," I said, grinning sheepishly. I kind of felt guilty now that he was summoned because of his danger radar for his Eternal tingled. "I’m getting worried for Jade so I want to ask her about it."
"I see," he nodded easily, so I was glad he didn’t feel upset or think it was only something trivial. "Have you written your message?"
I took out the paper I fished out from Natha’s desk, where I had written the whole story about Jade’s unconscious state. Zia helped me write it in demon language, fixed the grammar, and told me about better phrases for some words. Thanks to that, I didn’t receive Eruha’s criticism this time. He dripped his blood like the last time, and the letter burned into nothingness.
On my shoulder, I could feel Ignis flinch and raise its head in intrigue. After all, it was a fire that ate a letter to convey a message, so the lord beast of flame would certainly be interested.
"Thank you," I cupped my hands in gratitude. "Do you know when she will answer me?"
"She’ll answer you know," Eruha said while taking a seat beside Lesta.
As I looked at him inquisitively, his eyes shifted, darkening in color, unfocused; and there was a heavy aura surrounding him that made Lesta wince and Zia jump.
Was it... possession? It was a Nightmare’s skill though?
But I was wrong; when Eruha opened his mouth, it was still his voice and tone. "Don’t worry too much," he said--or she, technically. "The little bird is going through a tremendous change, and it’s something that an elemental bird had never done before. This lone path requires a journey in understanding oneself, so it will take significantly more time."
"How long...?"
Eruha shook his head and made a cross sign with his fingers. Ah--it seemed like this was a one-way communication, which meant she wouldn’t be able to hear me.
"Just trust your child, Valen," Eruha spoke further, relaying her words. "If the little bird doesn’t wake up after a month, I’ll personally take a look."
Oh, that was a relief. But...the line was a month’s time? That was so long! It’d be almost spring by then...
Nevertheless, it soothed my distraught heart to hear that Jade was alright, and would be alright. It didn’t matter to me whether Jade would be successful in its endeavor, I just wanted my child back so I could feel its presence again. While I would feel better by talking to Shwa every day, the hole created by Jade’s absence was something that couldn’t be simply rid of. Certainly, it was also a relief hearing that she would take action if something did go wrong.
Truly, having connections to powerful people is the best!
And then, Eruha turned his head, to face Lesta who seemed to be trying hard to maintain his cool. "My youngest’s Eternal, I shall see you soon."
O-ho? I watched Lesta swallow his saliva nervously as the light in Eruha’s eyes shifted again and the heavy aura subsided. The vampire blinked and, after looking dazed for two seconds, exclaimed softly. "Ah..." he blinked, before patting the demon’s arm lightly. "Well, don’t think too much about it."
"Easy for you to say," Lesta hissed, and I took it as our signal to get out of there.
Didn’t want to get tangled in a lover’s spat.
* * *
"I didn’t know they’re an item," Zia stroked her chin as we continued our journey to the wyvern keep, looking all fascinated. "Is it because I rarely spend time in the Castle? Hmm...they make me want to write something..."
"Natha told you not to use real people as models for your characters,"
"No," Zia argued. "He told me not to use your love story in my book. Nothing about others."
"Same thing,"
"Using people as models or inspiration is fine, I think. Just don’t use their life’s story without permission," Izzi, who climbed the hill with us to see Vrida, said from the back.
Zia and I turned our heads to look at him, who was wrapped in a coat and scarf as usual. "It’s rare for you to say something that makes sense," Zia scoffed.
"What the hell?" Izzi grumbled. "I’m an inventor! I always make sense!"
"There’s no correlation between that!"
These two just met again for an hour or two and they were already bickering. It was kind of funny though, and nicely filled the emptiness created by the absence of chirping sounds.
Just like Izzi, Zia was also awed by the sight of Vrida. She told me that there was no wyvern in the realm of Lust, and with how we talked about a mount before, she was wholly excited by this.
"Hey, hey, is it possible for me to ride her?" she asked, whispering in case Vrida felt offended about it.
"As long as you do it with me, it should be fine," I told her while patting the wyvern’s cheek. Vrida did not look so energetic, perhaps because Jade hadn’t visited her for five days already. She looked as sad as I was, which was endearing. "I could communicate with her, so it’s alright. But normally, only wyvern rider can control the flight."
The wyvern keeper, who was also a rider, nodded in agreement. Another reason why it was expensive to purchase wyvern was because it came with its rider, who doubled as a keeper. This wasn’t just for the specialized grooming, but also because wyvern needed to fly every now and then, lest they would get frustrated. So it was always better to have a rider ready. Of course, the cost of the grooming and the rider’s service itself was high.
Such a wealthy man’s hobby, wasn’t it?
"I see..." Zia nodded. From the sparkles in her eyes, I felt like there would be a wyvern in her next book.
"Hmm...why don’t we ride Vrida to the Lair sometime?" I turned to look at Zia and Izzi. "I want to show the place to her, and I can give you a ride home."
"Really?!" Zia exclaimed loudly and jumped, which made Vrida blink in surprise from the sudden enthusiasm. "Let’s do it! Let’s do it!" she laughed, didn’t even seem to mind that she would have to ride Vrida with Izzi.
"Mm," I turned to look at Vrida again with a smile, stroking the soft flesh beneath its jaw. "Let’s do it after Jade wakes up."
