Chapter 283: The best kind of drama is the one you’re not a part of
"Hmm...it means, I will become a family with Natha," I told the little bird after mulling about it for a while.
[Family? Like with Jade?]
"Uhh...it’s kind of different," I scratched my cheek in confusion. "Let’s just say we will make a promise to live together forever."
[Jade and Master will live together forever!]
Crap. Jade was right; as my familiar, the little bird would live as long as I live, and immediately cease to exist once I died. So how could I tell Jade that what was between me and Natha was something different?
I groaned and rolled to my side on the rug, while Jade jumped down to nuzzle me in confusion. [Master?]
"I don’t know..." I muttered helplessly to the rug. "What is a wedding? What is a marriage?"
"It’s being together and making babies," I heard Izzi’s voice from beside the fireplace, and I kicked his legs lightly.
"I told you to watch your mouth!" I hissed.
[Babies...]
See?!
And then Ignis--or its manifestation--crawled to my cheek and spoke to Jade. "It means the Nightmare will be Valen’s mate."
Ignis!
[Mate?] the little bird tilted its head, the beady eyes looked here and there like someone looking for an answer during a test. Curiously, Jade perked up not long after. [Ooh!]
Ooh? What oh? What did you know about ’mate’, Jade? You’re supposed to be a child!
I groaned even more and Arta patted my head while laughing. "It’s okay, Young Master. Even Sir Jade has to know it sooner or later," she said.
I looked at her with my lower lip jutted out. I know that, but I still didn’t want Jade to grow up so fast. My little bird hadn’t even lived for a year!
"Well, how else would you explain your honeymoon, then?" Lesta shrugged. "You’ll have to leave the bird behind, won’t you?"
I blinked and sat up slowly, staring at him blankly as heat crept up my cheek. "Honeymoon..." I muttered unconsciously while rubbing the rune circling the base of my ring finger.
Arta slung her arm across my shoulder and whispered dramatically. "Honeymoon~"
[Honeymoon~] Zia cooed from across the realm, and it gate Jade chirping.
[Honeymoon?]
I gasped and sushed them all, snatching a candy and popping it between Jade’s beak. [Jade can eat candy again before lunch?] the little bird gasped and instantly forgot about the topic at hand.
Gosh--I needed that child education book quickly!
[Have you talked about it? Did you decide on a place?] Zia asked eagerly, and I could see her sparkling eyes from here, because I guessed it would be the same with the way Arta looked at me right now.
"Uhh...not yet; I’ll just let Natha decide on that," I said. Because, once again, he was the busy one, and he was the one who had roamed the land. "Oh, Arta, I don’t know about the...uhh, party or whatever, but..." I paused and looked at the others. "I want the ceremony to be more...private. Just close friends, you know?"
"Of course, Young Master!" she replied cheerfully. "That’s how it’s supposed to be anyway; people who you know on a personal level."
I nodded, feeling relieved that the main thing was over. "Ah, by the way, the one to officiate us will be D’Ara," I told her, and when she looked at me blankly, I added. "You know--Natha’s teacher? Eruha’s mother?"
Lesta coughed on the tea he was drinking, and for the first time, I saw Opti’s hand tremble so much he dropped his cookie to the ground. With a choked voice, Arta replied in a stutter.
"The P-Pro...Progenitor?"
And then she ceased functioning for half an hour.
* * *
[Wow...]
"Is it that surprising?" I whispered to the communication orb, although there was no one there anymore.
The vassals went back to the Castle, and Izzi got back to his work. So now I was talking alone with Zia while Jade telling Ignis everything about the journey and Vrida.
[Of course, it is! She’s a Sacred Guardian, Val! a Sacred Guardian!]
Well, that was true, but...hmm, I wondered if I had been too desensitized to meeting such an entity after talking with two Gods. Granted, it wasn’t in their true form, and only inside my consciousness, but still...
"Well, that’s nice, isn’t it?" I grinned. For me, D’Ara almost felt like a big sister; like a family. So, rather than how grand her existence was, I just felt happy that someone with whom I had a close relationship, and had helped Natha so much in his younger days would come to my important day.
[It’s not just nice, Val] Zia said. [She’s a monumental figure, and truly rarely seen by others, even the vampires. Right now, the vassals must be on high alert because of that]
"Why?"
[Because they had to prepare for her visit, of course!] I could hear Zia humph-ing out there. [Even if it’s another Lord visiting, the Castle would get into a frenzy so everything would look good. So just imagine if it’s a Sacred Guardian]
"Ah...so you’re telling me it’s not just a matter of my wedding, right?" I leaned back on the couch and nibbled on a chocolate--a small cheat before luncheon. "They’ll have to make sure the Castle--no, the city itself looks perfect."
[Exactly!] Zia snapped her fingers, probably making a finger gun to the orb. [That’s a huge explosive you dropped there, Val]
The sound of subdued laughter filled the room, and I felt my lips spread into a smile. "I wanted to tell you first thing yesterday, you know. But you’re not here, so..."
[Mm, sorry for not telling you] Zia sighed. [It’s just a bit chaotic here]
"Oh?" my back straightened in reflex, and I guessed the concern was apparent in my voice because Zia responded immediately.
[Oh, don’t worry, it’s nothing bad. And everything is going smoothly, so I can go back in a few days to help prepare your wedding] Zia said energetically. [There’s no way I’m going to miss all the fun!]
What fun? Was it really fun preparing for someone else’s wedding? Hmm...perhaps because the event itself would feel like festivities? Zia did love festivals.
Well...but most of all, I was glad that she sounded genuinely cheery, which told me she was truly alright.
"So what’s the chaos about?" I tried to ask, wondering what kind of thing it was that could make Zia go back home after years of running away.
There was a bit of silence on the other side, which told me she was contemplating the answer. After almost a minute, I told her; "You don’t have to tell me if you can’t," I said. "I’m just a bit curious. We can talk about something else; I haven’t told you about my adventures in Gluttony, have I? There’s this funny thing when the vampires asked for--"
[We took down my brother]
I blinked, my voice lost in the shocking news.
[Ah, we’re not killing him or anything, we just forced him to abdicate the Lord’s position]
She said it like it would lessen the blow, but it certainly didn’t. I still blinked and digested the news for a while, pouring a new tea and gulping it all at once.
"Uhh...when you said we..."
[Well, all of us that had been too fed up with his incompetent ass] Zia said.
I opened my mouth, but it was only after swallowing my saliva that I managed to make a sound. "Can you...tell me from the start?"
[Sure] Zia said casually, and started to tell me what happened.
She told me how Aleena had been gathering supporters right after coming back from the banquet last time. She reached out to the elders who weren’t using Zir’Kal for their benefit, and slowly tried to win over the other children of the previous Lord. Zia was there to help her convince those children.
I recalled then, how Natha told me Zia had the highest position among the children, because she was the daughter of the previous Lord’s first wife. Her blood was even purer than Zir’Kal, but the Incubus was older, and Zia also refused to inherit any position--not to mention she was often running away to Natha’s Lair.
Still, Zia held influence, and she helped unify the other children to send a motion of dismissal to the Lord. Apparently, there was a law that said a motion must be proceeded should it contain the endorsement of more than two-thirds of the direct lineage.
And so, the motion was heard and brought to the court. The elders who stood behind Aleena supported the motion, as well as the merchant unions and the representative from the bank owned by Natha--which held the realm bond that the Lord Castle owed.
And that was how the Lord of Lust, who still bore my curse even now, got impeached.
Right when I was having my fun vacation in Gluttony.
"Wait, so...are you telling me that Aleena is now the Lord of Lust?" my eyes widened as the realization struck me.
[Uh-huh] Zia answered with a chuckle. [Her inauguration is in a few days, so I still need to be here until then. I’ll come back after, alright?]
...well, that was another bomb dropped today.
