Chapter 254: It’s hard to keep track of your otherworld vocabulary
With another sense of being pulled by the gut, I stepped out of the portal into the land of Gluttony. Thankfully, Natha was there to hold me so I wouldn’t wobble undignifiedly in front of Gluttony’s mages and Castle staff.
We arrived at the magic tower too, and perhaps because of that, the design of the room was pretty much the same. If it wasn’t because of the different mages and reception committee standing by, I would have thought we were in the same place.
Upon closer inspection, however, there was a difference in ’quality’. That was, although the tower was made of dark stone too, just like back in L’Anaak Eed, the stones used to build here were of lesser quality. Not to say it was cheap, but that the realm of Greed was truly made of luxury.
I hadn’t realized it because I never went to other demon realms aside from the realm of greed. And after living there for months, I was so used to the view of luxury that it became normal. Perhaps because the Castle itself wasn’t decorated in a gaudy way; you know, with sparkling gold and everything--I heard the Castle of Envy was like that though, a gilded Castle.
The Castle of Greed, meanwhile, took their expense in making sure all the materials used in construction were of the highest quality. It was bedecked in black and white marble, decorated in just a few but the most high-rated pieces, and there would never be a case of the Castle losing power on mana stones even though the whole Castle was being protected by layer upon layer of barrier formations.
It was, in fact, an extravagance that could only be gained by the power of money. A luxury so thorough it felt like just a part of daily lives and no longer something to brag about. Ah, gems? Precious metals? Expensive artwork? That was boring. Bring something no one could get their hand easily, like the flower that only bloomed in a special region under specific conditions, or an all-cure miracle elixir, or, who knows...a dragon, perhaps?
That was the vibe I got from the realm of greed.
The magic tower of gluttony, meanwhile, was cold. Eruha told me that the whole realm was made that way; colder inside than outside, in order to preserve their food storage more. Because, as you might already guess, the realm was home to big eaters.
Just like the magic tower, the Lord Castle that was only next door was also made of material that made the temperature inside colder than the outside. So that was why Natha insisted I wore my fur coat still, because even though I still have the temperature balancing from Ignis, the Salamander wasn’t here to adjust it further.
But you know...this cold air that almost felt bleak, the dark stone material, the height of the building--which was probably made to accommodate tall vampires like Eruha--and pointy arches--same things, perhaps?--made me feel like I was entering some sort of medieval vampire fantasy novel setting.
Too bad that Eruha said he couldn’t turn into a bat or, I don’t know, sparkled or something.
"Mm, the aesthetic is as expected," I nodded while stroking my chin as we walked to the Lord’s court hall.
"What do you mean, Young Master?" Eruha asked with intrigue.
"This gothic vibe, hmm...very vampire-like," I replied, before thinking about it better. Because of my carelessness, there was silence ensued right after.
"...what’s gothic?"
I almost gasped, and awkwardly spread my arms widely to point into everything. "Oh...just...this?" I laughed sheepishly, grabbing the arm of my fiance that busy stifling his laugh.
"I see..."
Thankfully, Eruha did not pursue further and just nodded as if my explanation made sense at all. I pinched Natha’s arm and gave him a glare, because why was he just laughing without helping me?!
"I kind of thought you’d expect something like a candy house, Young Master," Lesta said, curling his lips as if I was a child whose imagination about the land of gluttony only stuck in the matter of food.
Excuse me, I also knew enough that what the resident was after wasn’t the food itself, but the mana essence inside the food--because, you know, they were vampires. It wouldn’t help them power up much compared to sucking blood, for example, but it was enough to satiate their craving.
That was why the ingredients we bought were all rare delicacies containing mana. By the way, the herbal drink and the meal that was given to me during my recovery all used recipes from this place.
So, no--I wouldn’t think that a place where Eruha kin existed would be a dream-like place made of sugar. But of course, there was someone who got extra excited because of Lesta’s words.
[Candy house?!] Jade peeked out behind my coat, the beady eyes sparkled at the mention of its dream palace.
"That’s Jade," I told Lesta with a huff. "I expect something like a cookie house."
The green head shook and patted me in protest. [Candy more yummy]
"But it’ll melt in the summer, Jade."
[Oh...] the little bird sighed and pulled back to hide behind my coat--because the elemental bird was purely made of mana and I didn’t want to risk it.
I patted the little bird gently. "Let’s make a cookie house once we get back"
[Candy house too!]
"You can make cookies?" Natha raised his brow.
"Of course not!" I crossed my arms and grinned. "But our chef can do anything!"
"That’s right," Lesta nodded in agreement. "We even brought twelve flavors of popcorn here."
Right--that was such a wow moment when we had a taste party the other day. "Will you try opening a trade here?"
"There’s no better place to sell food than the Land of Gluttony, isn’t it?" Lesta smirked, again in his businessman mode. "Especially if it’s something new."
Well, I guessed that was one of his errands while I visited Natha’s teacher on the third day, after we were done greeting the Lord and participating in the feast she prepared for guests. That was a tradition I could not ditch.
Speaking about that...
"Is there anything I should note before we greet the Lord?" I asked the three demons. I wouldn’t want my ignorance to cause a diplomatic problem after all.
"Hmm...something to note huh..." Natha tapped on his arm in contemplation. I knew that Natha and the Lord of Gluttony had the same teacher, so it could be said that they were fellow disciples. Thus, he was quite close to her. But after thinking about it for a while, all he said was simply; "Just don’t get surprised."
"Huh?"
"It’s not that you’ll be in trouble if you do, but...she likes it when people get surprised because of her, so I’d rather we’re not feeding her ego," he shook his head, and to my surprise, Eruha was nodding his head in agreement.
Was that...something wise to mention in the hallway with the Castle guards and staff escorting us? I turned to look at Lesta, but he merely gave me his usual calm, cool smile which universally meant ’It’s fine, don’t think too much about it’.
Oh, well...if they said so.
Alright, don’t act surprised. But what kind of things would make me surprised, though? I had met two Gods, I had a Primordial Seed in my necklace, and I had gone through a rollercoaster of origin and a trial--two trials. So even if I were to be face-to-face with a very big vampire lady--since everyone here towering over me so much I started to feel insecure--I didn’t think I would be surpr--oh...
"Hmm...right on time as usual, you and your disgustingly calculative schedule," the Lord of Gluttony said before any of us could even say any greeting.
"Time is money, after all."
Natha shrugged, and held my hand to lead me toward the big table in the middle of...wait, wasn’t this supposed to be a court hall? Why was there a big dining table full of cakes in the middle of it? Ah, was it because it was tea time?
But to have this in the court hall...
Well, the dining table did have more chairs, so...perhaps they usually held court around the dining table? Discussing things with a satiated stomach was better, I guessed.
"A-ha! So this is the sweetheart,"
Her voice--and the pet name--pulled me out of my momentary surprise at the spread of cakes that could fill a cakery. Finally, I looked at the vampire sitting behind the dining table, with twinkling blood-red eyes that reminded me of Lord An’Hyang, and she was...
Uhh, a small girl?
Well, she wasn’t small exactly, just the size of an average adult human female. But I finally realized why it would be surprising for many people. "Ah..."
The red eyes squinted. "Hmm...you don’t seem surprised seeing me..."
"Ah, am I supposed to?" I scratched my neck awkwardly. Honestly, rather than her appearance, I was more surprised about having a dining table in the court hall. "Oh, I mean...it’s not the first time I’ve seen someone petite with a big appetite,"
Well, you would have, if you lived in a modern world with streaming sites showing you people eating tons of food in one sitting without looking fazed and still slimmer than other people. Those so-called big eaters. I used to watch their videos to increase my appetite, because I lost it every day.
"Oh?" she suddenly straightened her back, looking very much intrigued. It felt as if she would drag me into an in-depth interview about who these people were.
Which, obviously, I wouldn’t be able to answer.
Oops...
"Well, the world is vast," thankfully, this time, Natha helped me a little bit.
"How interesting," the red eyes narrowed, and I wasn’t sure I could get away from this now, even with Natha’s help.
