Chapter 223: There’s no such thing as too much happiness
"Huh, it’s really working,"
Natha raised his brow in fascination, holding my wrist and looking keenly through my body. The silver eyes were glowing as they scanned my circuits after I was done with my morning breathing exercise. I had been doing it for two weeks now, and by the look of it, seemed like the blockage in my gate had been subsiding more.
"How much longer do you think it’ll take?" I asked eagerly.
"Just a few more weeks, I think," Natha rubbed my wrist and gave me a sweet smile. "We could try to amp up the Amrita, and perhaps you’ll get totally healed not long after New Year."
"Oh! That’s nice!" I raised my arms and swung ours together. "I’ll be ready for the spring lesson!"
Natha had this fond smile as his arms were getting swung up and down, which made me grin and end up plopping down on his lap. "Oh? For what do I owe this occasion?"
"I just feel weird," I fiddled with the green pendant that almost mirrored my eyes.
"Why?" he caressed my hair gently, tucking some strands behind my ear so he could see my face clearly.
"I feel like...I have been feeling too happy lately," I confessed.
Natha tilted his head and frowned in confusion. "Isn’t that good?"
"Well, yeah...but..." I bit my lips. "It makes me worried that something bad will happen..."
I knew it was a bad habit to have this kind of negative thought, but I couldn’t help it. I was unfamiliar with this continuous happiness, waking up nicely, things going smoothly...
Everything felt so nice and good and...honestly, I was afraid it would end. I was afraid something huge and bad would happen and shatter this good life that I was having right now.
"Sweetheart," Natha pinched my chin lightly and pushed my bowed face up. His eyes were looking at me keenly, but also with a tenderness that made my heart tingle. "Do you want to know something?"
"Mm?"
Natha smiled and cupped my face before telling me. "That’s what I always used to feel."
"...huh?"
"Every time I looked at your face, I used to wonder if it would be the last time I could see it," he said. "That’s how afraid I was."
Oh...
My eyes widened slightly as I blinked in surprise. He rubbed my cheek and continued, still with that smile and tender gaze. "And that’s normal, I think, but it shouldn’t make you feel less happy," he said. "If anything, it should make you treasure this moment even more."
Oh! Was that what they meant by seizing the day?
"I was so afraid, that I wanted to just lock you inside a room and be with you all the time," Natha whispered. "But you wouldn’t like that, would you? I wouldn’t be able to see this pretty smile if I did that, would I?"
It wasn’t like I had anywhere to go, but getting locked up...
It reminded me of the time I was grounded inside the hotel because he was upset, and I shuddered just thinking about that. He was right--I was getting moody during my punishment time, so if that happened for a prolonged time...
Natha chuckled, probably because I was making a lot of expressions in a short amount of time. He held my hand then, and kissed the back of it lightly.
"I was afraid, but all I could do was just treasure the time I got to spend with you. And what would you know, the problem got solved one day,"
Right...no one knew how the future would unfold. But if we were too afraid to face it, we would just get stuck in place, inside the cocoon of our comfort zone.
"If you get scared because of that, hmm...it would trouble me," he pursed his lips, which made me feel rather guilty. But before I could apologize, he continued; "Because I plan to make you feel happy every day. What should I do if you keep having this thought every time I make you happy?"
I raised my brows, and after a few seconds of realization, hit his shoulder firmly. Why should he scare me like that? I thought he got sad or offended for a second there.
"Also," Natha stood up, and I gasped as my body got lifted too. "Even if bad thing happens, you have a lot of people who will help you overcome it, don’t you?" he smiled and started to list other people, from the vassals to the servants, while ending it in a very cheeky; "...and me, and your lover, and your Demon Lord, and--"
"I got it, I got it!" I laughed and clasped my hands over his mouth. "Just put me down, will you? I don’t want to be teased by the servants again."
"Alright, alright," he put me down just before we reached the bedroom door. But of course, he had to make me blush again with his next remark. "Let’s go feed our child."
* * *
"Look at you all smiley," Izzi greeted me with a sneer. "Another lovey-dovey morning with your Demon Lord, huh?"
"Why? Jealous?"
Surprisingly, Izzi became silent at my reply, looking rather blank for a few seconds.
"Huh? Really?"
"Whatever," he grumbled and stomped away, walking to his room.
I share a look with Jade and Ignis, tilting our heads for his weird display. "What’s wrong with him? Does he want a lover or something?" I asked my two little companions. Ignis just scoffed and scampered away to take a look around the research floor and Jade just looked at me in confusion.
He didn’t vanish for long though, and came back with a simple box in his hand. He put the box on the lounge table and we gathered around it--me and my two companions--staring at it with interest.
"Look here; see if this works," Izzi said while opening the box. Inside, was something that looked almost like a pen. No--it would be closer to those soldering tools on Earth, but smaller; more compact and aesthetically pleasing.
"It’s done?!" I took the pen excitedly. It was the carving tools that we tried to make after scraping the gun project.
"Yeah. I think it works, but I don’t know if it would be good enough for those formation masters,"
Hmm...in that case, I wouldn’t be able to judge that, since I was a total beginner at that. "Wait--we need someone proficient with this," I pursed my lips to ponder on who to ask some help from, and as if fate smiling at us, the door opened. "Oh, nice timing--Lesta!"
I stood up and waved my hand at the demon, who really used this place as his restroom now. "Mm, such an enthusiastic response," Lesta raised his brow. "There must be something you want from me."
"Tsk--so cynical," I clicked my tongue at his dry response. "But you’re right; here, can you test this out?"
I showed him the pen and Lesta, who was in the middle of opening a candy wrapper for Jade, paused. "Oh, the carving tool, huh? Let me see..."
He plopped the candy right into the little bird’s mouth and took a seat. Taking out a slab of stone, he carved a formation then and there, as if just making a scribble in a notebook. If it wasn’t for the flow of mana in his writing arm, as well as the mana indicator lighting up along the pen’s circuit, I would think he was just playing around.
Was making a formation easy? Of course not. You need to have precise control of mana to be infused in each stroke, and each stroke required a different amount, so you need to be good at calculation too.
And yet this demon did it as if he was scribbling random things; with a nonchalant face and decisive movement. Hmm...as expected of Natha’s right-hand man--I mean demon.
He was fast too--or was it that I got too absorbed watching him? Before I even had a chance to get bored, he had finished the carving.
"How is it? How is it?" we asked eagerly. Even Jade jumped on the table, even though the bird wouldn’t know a thing about it.
"I had to say..." Lesta observed the pen keenly, turning it this way and that way, making us hold our breath nervously. "This is quite fascinating."
Yes! I did a high-five with Izzi and Jade.
"Are you going to market this?" Lesta asked, twirling the pen in his hand.
"Of course! I have to pay my debt, you know!" Izzi slammed the table--no, he wasn’t angry, just excited.
I scooted closer to Lesta and asked curiously. "Will it sell? How do we do it?"
Lesta looked at the pen, and a crafty smile was on his lips. "Hmm...would you like to leave this matter in my hands? I’ll take care of the intellectual rights too."
"Huh?"
Well, wasn’t that neat? Neither I nor Izzi knew anything about the market, and we didn’t have any connection or know how to get a patent for this thing. Although...having a Demon Lord as a lover could be considered a connection too, right? Including his subordinates.
"We’ll be grateful, of course, but...are you not busy?"
As far as I knew, they should all be busy with the end-of-the-year internal inspection--hmm...audit?
"I have time to come here, don’t I?" he leaned back and smirked. "Ah, but I’ll take commission though."
"Sure, but draw it in a clean contract," I shrugged.
"Of course," Lesta drew a circle with his fingers, and then shifted his gaze to Izzi. "Let’s see...can you make about twenty-five first before the New Year?"
"In two weeks?!" the golden eyes widened, but upon Lesta’s indifferent gaze and arched brow, he shrunk and fiddled with the tablecloth. "Well...it’s not that I can’t..."
"Oh, you don’t have to make it to this quality," Lesta waved his hand. "Just a prototype is alright--in fact, you should lessen the quality for a bit."
Izzi perked up then, clapping his hand once. "Oh, in that case, I can do it no problem."
I looked at Lesta and asked curiously. "Why twenty-five?"
"For New Year gifts,"
"Oh?"
Lesta let out another one of his crafty smiles; eyes narrowed and lips curled up. "To some of the formation masters," he said.
"Ah! You give them prototypes as gifts so they would want the better quality ones?" I slammed the table in realization. "And then if they are satisfied, they’ll recommend it to their disciples!"
"Ooh..." Izzi exclaimed while nodding.
Lesta responded with a smile and added. "We’ll gift it to some headmasters too."
"For the prospective students!"
The black eyes winked in affirmation. "Make sure you finish it at least three days before New Year. I’ll still need to pack it and send it through express mail," he told Izzi. "It’ll be better if you can finish earlier."
"I’ll try..."
"Cheer up, Izzi! If we get enough money, you can start on your next project," I patted the elf’s back, and the golden eyes blinked in renewed brilliance.
"Now that fires me up."
