Chapter 211: There are truly a lot of roads leading to Rome; as long as we find the roads
What if it was the author girl--
"Oh, believe me, sweetheart," he grasped my cheek and stroked them, looking at my eyes firmly as if telling me to erase any unnecessary thought. "I thought about that countless times," he said. "But the conclusion I reached had always been the same; no matter whether it’s truly you or if it’s actually someone else, my heart still goes to you. Only you."
"But..." I bit my lips. "Wouldn’t you think of a girl when talking about...making a child?"
Instead of responding with words, Natha pulled away slightly and tilted his head, silently looking at me with a smile as if he was waiting for something.
For an answer.
Oh!
"That’s..." I turned my head toward the artifact chamber. "That’s what...the Egg is for?"
He pulled my hand gently and opened the door to the chamber where the Egg was snuggly awaiting in its preservation tube. "Honestly, while I was in the other world with you, I didn’t think about that at all."
"You mean, about procreation?"
"Mm," a nostalgic smile carved on his lips. "All I could think about was you. How happy I was when I talked with you. How fast my heart beat when our hands were almost touching. How I want to stay by your side as long as I could,"
The hand holding me was tightening slightly, and I slipped my fingers between his, holding tighter.
"It was only after I got back that I realized the peculiarity and the problem with this," he chuckled with a reminiscing air. "But I was already outside the Sanctuary, and could no longer converse with His Majesty. I couldn’t ask about you anymore, or how would I go about that ’fate’ he told me about."
At this point, I just listened to his story quietly. All of these things he told me were there, written in the book as he poured everything he could remember from his partial transmigration as much as he could before he forgot about it. It was apparent in the slightly messy, hasty handwriting when he was so neat and meticulous before.
I could read it in this notebook, but it wouldn’t feel the same compared to hearing him telling it right now. His face seemed like it morphed back to his younger self, to the time when he met me for the first time. The bright eyes, even with different colors, overlapped with the Nat I knew throughout those night visits. The smile had that bit of mischievousness that he sometimes displayed when he argued with Jade.
"I thought about it long and hard while finishing my training with Teacher, but in the end, my conclusion stayed the same," he turned his head to look at me, silver eyes glimmering softly. "I don’t care what is supposed to be. For me, it’s just you."
It was an impulse when I pulled his arm, and brought my lips to his. He was just so lovely, my Demon Lord. How could it be, that I had been so blind to the depth of his affection? All those months worrying about his misplaced feelings felt so much of a waste.
"It’s always nice when you make the first move," Natha laughed softly against my lips. "It feels so rewarding after all those years."
"What if it’s really not me? The Demon God might smite you," I whispered like that, but my heart was light and unburdened. Because I knew it wouldn’t affect his stance.
"Then so be it," he leaned down to kiss my cheek, smiling from ear to ear as if we weren’t just talking about potential blasphemy. "But He let us be so far, so I’ll keep pushing my luck."
I stroked his cheek, brushing away the stray hair that slightly covered his face. "Didn’t you say...you were worried about this mission? About this whole...fate?" I lowered my gaze, thinking back to the night we talked about the seed for the first time. "That you’re worried your feelings might not be your feelings, but something artificial forced by divine power?"
"Indeed," he nodded, the soft expression turned solemn for a second. "That’s what I was thinking about in Teacher’s abode."
He circled his arms around my waist, and continued. "Ironically, that’s what made me hold onto hope; if that was indeed a curated event, wouldn’t Fate give way for us to meet again?" his lips curled again, and then, gently, he pressed his forehead against mine. "And then you said it doesn’t matter. Even if it’s something that blossomed because of divine intervention, my feelings and the happiness that I got aren’t fake. It’s not false."
"Mm..."
"I don’t care if you’re not my fated one, I’ll still make it so," he put his lips gently on my brow, trailing kisses to my eyelid. "But if you are indeed who I’m supposed to meet, that would make it so much sweeter."
Gosh--this demon was too good with his words. I peeked at him, fiddling with the thin chain around his neck and whispered. "Flatterer,"
"Your flatterer," he corrected.
I laughed and then flinched at a sudden vibration in the air, like a soft electric shock running through my skin and making me tingle in a funny way. "What..."
Turning to the source of the vibration, I was reminded of our initial objective here; looking at the Egg--the Primordia Seed.
Oh? It didn’t do that the last time I was here...
"Right--what about this one?" I stepped back and continued to approach the tube where it sat snuggly. "When did you acquire this?"
"After I made the decision that it has to be you, I told my teacher about it," Natha said, and I looked at him in surprise.
Someone else...know about us?
"Ah, right," Natha nodded. "I told my teacher about the otherworld possession, she..." he paused, looking at me silently for a bit, before chuckling. "Oh, this is such a coincidence."
"What is?"
"She is Eruha’s progenitor," he explained with a smile. "One of the Sacred Guardian."
What?? My teacher Eruha? My eyes widened at this...what was this...parallel? So our ’teachers’ were both vampires?
Oh! Was this why Natha tried to take Eruha out of Pride?
"She was a Guardian, so I thought she would be able to help me attain some answers," Natha explained further. "After hearing my story, she went into seclusion for a while. Once she came out, she told me to graduate and gave me a mission."
"A mission..."
"Within one of the still unexplored ruins of the Old Age, was a treasure,"
My eyes widened. "Was it the Egg?"
Natha laughed softly. "Almost," he said, stopping in front of the tube. "It was a stone, an unassuming one. It looked just like a pebble on the side of the road, but..."
"But..." I looked at him, unblinking, heart racing at the mention of treasure.
"The room where the stone lay, contained the last energy of the vanishing Primordial God," he continued. "The stone, should I succeed in obtaining it, would grant me the thing I needed the most to realize my ’fate’--or so she said."
"Ah, so...you found it, and the stone turned into this egg--I mean, seed?" I gasped.
"After toiling around for almost a decade, yes," Natha stroked the tube, which vibrated with the soft pulse coming out of the egg-shaped seed.
I see...so that was why he got into ’adventuring’ as a mercenary in the past. It must have been to find the ruin within the many dungeons spread out in this world.
"It was when I obtained the seed that I heard Lord An’Hyang told me to keep it secure no matter what, until the time comes," the silver eyes narrowed, staring keenly at the pulsating egg.
"So..." I glanced at him, feeling my cheek heating up a little bit. "This is how...we’re going to conceive a child?"
"If my Teacher is to be believed," Natha smiled, stroking my head without averting his gaze from the seemingly alive sphere.
I shifted my gaze to the egg, tracing the complicated pattern on its surface, which reminded me of Natha’s alpha seed. For some reason, it felt so familiar now, as if I had seen it somewhere else. Why did my memory always fail me at a time like this?
"But...how do we..."
"I don’t know,"
I turned to look at Natha, blinking in surprise and confusion. "Huh?"
"I don’t know," he repeated, with a wry smile on his lips. "I don’t know how, I don’t know what we should do now,"
My lips parted without any sound, just staring at him dumbfoundedly.
"I told you I don’t know much," he gave me an awkward look. "It’s not like it came with an instruction paper."
I pressed my lips, didn’t know if I should laugh or cry at that. He shrugged and took my hand again. "Well, at least you’re not getting censored anymore, so it’s a step?"
Natha, when he didn’t know about something, would have this frustrated and helpless look on his face, even if it was just for a second. I realized it more now, because it was the same face the doctor made when he couldn’t answer my curiousity.
Ahh...it was like each time, there would be something new I found out about him, and it was wonderful. Even this confusion we shared was wonderful.
But I shouldn’t get distracted now. Looking back at the pulsing seed, there was only one thing coming up in my mind right now.
"Should I touch it?"
