Chapter 203: You can’t stay mad when you’re lover acting like a happy puppy

"The Primordial Seed,"

He paused immediately after that, watching me with unblinking, careful eyes. I could hear his beating heart, the rustling grass and leaves, the blowing wind, and even the faint chatters from somewhere far.

But not the sound of his breath.

The palms on my cheeks were slightly colder, telling me he was truly nervous when he uttered those words--which I had never heard before.

And that was why I was confused. "Umm...what is...a Primordial Seed?"

For a few seconds, Natha was completely still. I wasn’t even sure I could hear his heartbeat. But he wasn’t breathing for sure. And then his eyes started to shake, and the fingers upon my cheeks trembled slightly. He opened his mouth, but all I could hear was the quiet sound of an airy gasp, as if he was just surfacing after nearly getting drowned.

Definitely not a response I expected to get from asking a question back.

"W-why?" I reached out to grasp his cold cheeks. "What happened? Did I say something wrong--"

"No," he cut me swiftly, with the same voice he used when he said that he loved me. "You said something very, very, very ’right’."

Obviously, I got even more confused, until I heard what he said next with glazed eyes. "You heard it," he whispered, pressing his lips hard on my forehead, before pulling away and repeating. "You can finally hear it..."

What...what did he mean by I can finally hear--

Oh? Oh!

"T-the Egg?" now, even my own voice was trembling. "Y-you mean...that’s the name of the Egg?"

"Oh, sweetheart," he pulled me into a kiss; just a short one, and he proceeded to lift me like a child until I yelped in surprise. I grabbed his shoulder tight for balance, blinking at the sudden height I was subjected to, looking over the top of his head. He peppered kisses on my cheek and jaw, and started to laugh in the middle of it. "Oh, God--you finally able to hear it!"

It was a pure, unadulterated joy reflected on his pair of sparkling moons that shimmered softly under the sunlight. His face was lit up by the slight color up on his cheeks and the curl of his lips.

I spent a long time being stunned at the way this demon could appear even more beautiful than he already was, and didn’t even realize he had started walking toward the house.

"Hey," my eyes narrowed as a certain memory resurfaced. "You’re lying when you said you were kidding, right?"

"Hmm? What are you talking about?" he tilted his head cheerfully.

"You said you were kidding about the person being able to hear the egg’s name to be your one true love," I pursed my lips at the memory of the first time I was truly annoyed by him. "You actually meant it, didn’t you?"

His eyes widened slightly, before he broke out a soft laugh. "Oh, that--perhaps I really was," he smiled amusedly when my lips twisted even more. "After all, I thought my ’destiny’ should be you, Valen, and no one else."

Ah...from his perspective, who was allegedly even gotten sent to another world temporarily to meet me, he must have thought that his ’one true love’ could only be me. I, on the other hand, was still struggling with the thought that even if it was, it might be Valmeier rather than me. And that was why I got hurt and angry at that time.

But then again, even if I knew he considered me as his one true love, not being able to hear the name of the Egg--I mean, Seed--would probably make me even sadder.

But now, he must have felt as if the stars were finally aligned.

"But even if the so-called ’destiny’ isn’t you, it wouldn’t change the fact that you are my one true love," he smiled widely, as if nothing could dampen his mood today. "As it had always been, and as it always will be."

Oh, fine! How could I stay annoyed at this flirty demon?

"But...what exactly is the Primordial Seed?"

He paused for a bit, making a pondering face. "Hmm...I think it’ll be best if I explain further once we get back, with the Seed in front of us," he said. "Not that I had much explanation."

Hmm...curiouser and curiouser.

But well, I guessed for now, it was good enough that the censorship had been lifted for me. I wondered when it happened, though, since we had never talked about the Egg again. But if I had to take a guess...

"Oh! Could it be because my soul is whole now?" I gasped at this realization, and Natha nodded in agreement.

"I thought so too,"

Wow...things really got solved one by one once my soul was fixed. Fascinating.

[Master! Jade know how many nights now!] Suddenly, we could hear the little bird chirping loudly as we arrived in front of the side door leading to the drawing room. The colorful rocket swooshed down cheerfully right at me. [It’s--why Nightmare carry Master? Master sick?!]

"No!" I swiftly denied it so Jade would stop panicking. The flaps of the wings grew calmer and Jade landed on my shoulder with a confused look on its little face. So I looked back at Natha with pressed lips. "Why are you carrying me? Let me go now."

I mean, I had asked him earlier, but he just decided to ignore me. And now, he just replied nonchalantly. "Why not?"

"Because I have perfectly working legs?"

"I also have perfectly sturdy arms," he said with a playful smirk, even proceeding to pat my thigh as if proving his claim.

I hit his shoulder to protest, even pursing my lips in annoyance, but he just laughed and looked so...joyful and innocent that I ended up just letting him carry me like a child into the room. It got even more embarrassing because now, there were servants to spectate.

Oh, well...I should probably try to get used to it from now on, because clearly, we were not living in a modern home with just the two of us and some pets; there would always be other people in our living space, from servants to my little companions.

And Natha had gotten even more publicly affectionate to me as well. Not that he wasn’t before, but at most, he would just hold my hand or caress my hair. All the other stuff he did when it was just the two of us.

But as if something finally snapped in him, now he just raining kisses on me whenever and wherever he liked. He’d been the one helping me put on my clothes, personally choosing which one I would wear that day. Arta told me Natha looked like a man in a honeymoon phase, and...uhh...well, there was probably some kind of truth in it.

In a sense, this week--although three of those days were a mess--was when we finally met. Like...for real. When we made it clear who we were, what we had been feeling. The cloud of doubt and fear was dispersing and Natha probably just felt so relieved that there was no longer a threat of my soul vanishing again.

It was like...we finally became true lovers? There was no secret anymore--at least about our feeling for each other.

He had been holding back on calling my name for almost seven decades, and it showed--because now, he also called me Valen openly, and a lot. It made me realize that he had been either calling me ’Val’ or ’sweetheart’ all this time.

I didn’t know if it was because he didn’t want to call me by someone else’s name when he knew what mine was, or because ’Val’ was the name I gave him when he asked me after he--ahem--kidnapped me to the Lair. It probably felt like he was cheating somewhat if he called me by Valmeier’s name.

And now, he just called my name whenever. Valen, have this; Valen, let’s go; Valen, come here--

Almost made me wish he called me sweetheart again.

I was happy to be able to hear my name again, but hearing it coming out of my mouth as if it was dripped in honey, coated with sugar, and sprinkled with marshmallows was...

Let’s just say I turned into a boiled crab easily.

Ah, right--I almost forgot. "So how many nights it is?" I asked the little bird as we stepped into the drawing room. Panne had prepared my second breakfast there--just some biscuits and fruit--and Natha finally allowed me to use my own perfectly working legs.

[A lot! More than a hundred!] Jade replied before flying to the plate of jelly on the table. Even though it already had some jelly during breakfast.

"A hundred nights seem right," I chuckled. "Almost as old as you!"

[Huh?] Jade paused from pecking on the jelly and lifted the green head, blinking in surprise.

"That’s why Natha said the spring will come when you’re no longer a child," I explained with a laugh. "Because you’ll be twice older!"

[Huuuuh?!]

The jelly was getting forgotten at this point, because the little bird made an expression as if it was just facing a life-altering, world-bending reality. Beady eyes got even rounder and small beaks parted in wonder.

Hmm...was it that surprising?

And then, the little bird spoke with a gasp. [Nightmare...not make fun of Jade?]

I had to bend over to catch my breath from laughing too much after that.
