Chapter 201: It’s rather annoying when people constantly doubt your boyfriend
"One day, the Lord of Greed contacted the elves, asking for the Kingdom’s scrolls," she told me as we crossed the green field. "Obviously, none of us was willing to part with them--if we have any."
Mm, understandable--I nodded in support. Of course, it would be silly for them to let go of the Kingdom’s legacy to another race.
"We ignored him, of course, although I don’t know what the elves did," Amarein shrugged. "But not long after, the Lord suddenly asked about a young druid’s manifestation and even asked for a teacher,"
Ah...that should be the time after he found out I was transmorphing into water.
"We were baffled, and the elves started to investigate, trying to find out if there was really a druid around the Lord,"
We saw the rotunda, which had already been vacant--no courtesans in sight, fortunately--so we headed there as Amarein continued her story. "We didn’t find you, but we find the news article writing about the Priest of Judgment," she glanced at me with a deep smile. "And his weapon."
"Ah!"
Of course! They should be able to recognize the sacred weapon. "Alveitya..."
"Yes, Alveitya,"
My left arm vibrated at the sound of the spear’s name, as usual. The spear that usually stayed dormant unless it was being called was roused, and I let it out for the first time since we took this voyage.
Amarein watched the green light forming the white spear and sighed after it was fully manifested. I wondered if she had seen Alveitya in its full glory before, when it was still inside the vault of the Kingdom. The Spear buzzed and hovered around us, and Jade chirped cheerfully, circling Alveitya.
"I’m glad that Judgment fell to the Royal bloodline," she said solemnly, intertwining her fingers as the green eyes observed the Spear.
"So, you knew I’m a druid from reading about the Spear of Judgment?"
She nodded, eyes following the Spear that was now playing around us with Jade and Ignis, letting the Salamander hop on its shaft. "We weren’t sure if you’re of the Royal bloodline at first, because we didn’t know if the Spear was truly awakened or just responding to the nearest druid it could find. We were too afraid of disappointment too, so we proceeded carefully after that."
"Did you contact Natha again?"
"The elves did, mentioning the scroll that is now in your hand, I believed?" I nodded, and she continued. "They offered to check first, whether you are truly the descendant of the missing Princess, or just a regular half-druid,"
"And that’s how they came to the Lord Castle," I concluded, and Amarein confirmed it with a nod.
She looked at me in silence for a while, until I tilted my head and she spoke in a rather serious tone. "Can I speak honestly?"
"...of course?"
She gave me a troubled look, although her lips form a subtle smile. "I came here not just to heal you, but..."
From how our conversation progressed, I could guess the rest of her sentence. "You want to see if Natha manipulates me?"
She looked guilty, but answered honestly. "More or less," when my brows furrowed slightly, she continued. "I would like to ask for your forgiveness for that."
I took a deep breath and sighed inwardly. "Are you going to tell me to leave him too?"
She gave me an apologetic smile. "That was the plan, should I find that the Lord was playing us,"
"Did the Sarterian not tell you anything?"
"We couldn’t be sure unless we met you privately," she said. "But doing that also carried some level of risks."
"But they let you come here? Even though you’re supposed to stay alive?"
He chuckled slightly--I didn’t know if it was due to my clearly annoyed tone. "There’s already another High Shaman aside from me, so it’s alright. And..." she paused, smiling a bit wider. "I can feel the Lord’s desperation."
My brows dipped lower. "Then why--"
"I could feel it, but it didn’t automatically negate the doubt. And the other Elders were inclined to doubt everything," now, she also frowned a little bit. "I asked for your understanding. We are...scared. We want to be cautious of everything, and having the only descendant of the royal blood stays on a Demon Lord’s side is quite hard to digest."
My lips hardened slightly, and I took a seat on the side of the rotunda to calm myself down. I mean...fine, I did understand their sentiment, but it was just annoying that it kept happening. It was annoying to be treated as if I had no agency to decide on something.
"Forgive me," she said, lowering her head in my direction. "I realized that my suspicion was wrong. I already told the other back home that you are here on your own will, and that the Lord treated you very well."
I looked at her sharply. "It’s not me you should be apologizing to."
"Yes, I understand," she gave me a soft smile. "I will surely ask for Lord Natha’s forgiveness."
"Mm," I muttered briefly, looking down at my dirty feet. "He’s my first love, you know. My first man, my first everything," I looked up, looking at her keenly. "I would like him to be my last."
She did not reply for a long time, and we stayed in cold silence until she invited herself to sit beside me. "In that case, I will pray for your happiness."
"I’m happy now," I told her. "He was the one who give me that happiness, from the first time we met, a long time ago."
"Then, may that happiness stays for eternity," she said with a smile as she reached for my hand, a soft glow flowing from her fingers to mine.
I blinked at the warmth feeling flooding my mana core and seeping into my soul. "Is that...a blessing?"
She merely gave me a sweet smile instead of answering. Jade was chirping in wonder, because the bird could feel the foreign sensation in my soul, and flew back to me. It landed on my shoulder, staring at the glowing magic of the High Shaman.
"Fascinating," Ignis commented from above my head. "She gives you her luck, it’s good stuff."
"Huh? What--"
She grasped my retreating hand, the smile widened slightly. "This is my atonement," she said, "for upsetting you."
I blinked repeatedly, feeling the rush of deja vu. It was like that time with the elves all over again.
"And...it’s my gratitude for the Princess, something I had meant to give her but was too late already,"
Ugh...if she said it like that, how could I refuse? I had no idea what giving me her luck meant, but...if even Ignis sounded astonished, it should be something truly big.
"Is...is it really okay?"
"Of course," she patted my hand gently before letting go, shifting her gaze to the figure coming toward us from the mansion’s direction.
I followed her gaze, and felt my lips curled on their own. With long strides, Natha crossed the green field with steady steps, unlike yesterday when he rushed at me with teleport. There was a smile too in his face, and something in his hand.
"Oh!" as he got closer, I saw that he brought me my shoes, which I neglected somewhere at the edge of the green field.
Amarein stood up once Natha was only a few steps away from us, bowing lightly. "My Lord,"
"It’s almost lunch," he informed us.
"Huh? We’ve been out that long?" I blinked in surprise, before looking up to see the sun was above us.
"Evidently," he chuckled, crouching down in front of me. "Give me some water, brat."
"Uhh, wait--"
[Jade NO child!] the little bird protested, but still conjured up a water ball above my feet.
"Yes, yes, good boy," Natha smirked and, before I could protest, proceeded to wash my dirty feet with the hovering water ball.
I bit my lips, feeling Amarein’s presence like a glaring spotlight. How could he do this in front of others? He was a Demon Lord, for fuck’s sake!
It was hard to fight the impulse of pulling my legs away, but doing that would just prolong this embarrassing process, so I just swallowed my fluster and prayed for this to end as fast as possible.
But I had been roaming around too much, and had dirt even between my toes. Natha washed my feet so thoroughly, almost religiously, that I felt they ended up cleaner than before I stepped into the grass. I thought it would be over after that, but he took his sweet time drying my feet with a small towel he took from his storage space, patting my skin gently as if he was afraid he would graze it accidentally.
Gosh, this felt so nice but also so embarrassing. Perhaps if we were alone, I would enjoy it so much more, but...
I took a peek at Amarein, and immediately bit my cheek hard to prevent myself from shrieking. Because...because she gave me the same face that the vassals and the courtesans gave me earlier.
"Hu-hurry up!" I whispered to Natha sharply, feeling my face burning. Damnit--I thought I was done being embarrassed for today.
He laughed softly and started to put my feet inside the shoes one by one, before fastening them comfortably. "Did you have fun?"
"Umm, yeah," I watched his fingers tying the knot on my shoe with a tickling inside my heart. "I watched Ignis and Jade make a hot spring on a boulder."
His brow arched in wonder, and he muttered slightly. "Should we make a hot spring too in the Castle? Or the Lair?"
"No!" I yelled immediately.
If I didn’t tell him off right away, I felt like there would be a hot spring there by the time we got back from this trip!
