Chapter 151: No parents want their kid to grow fast
A buzzing sound was heard first, and then the air shimmered with glittering mana, forming frame after frame built from the formation below, until the edge met and fused at the peak of the dome.
After the barrier, it was a roaring sound. The whirl of even more magic formations got activated, sending a soft vibration throughout the ship. A single jolt marked the moment when the gigantic frame took off of the stone platform, wind belting beneath the hull and the spreading mechanical wings.
And then, we were flying.
I pressed my face at the cabin’s window, peering down with wide, unblinking eyes. Jade flapped its wings and hovered beside my head, also looking out through beady green eyes.
[Master, Jade can’t see things]
"I know, right? It’ll be nice if we can see the ground getting further away..." I pursed my lips, staring at Natha through the reflection of the window.
"No," the Demon Lord replied with a bright smile and firm tone, which told me it was non-negotiable.
"Hmph!"
[Hmph!]
We continued staring outside the window. I really wanted to see how the ship took off from the deck, how the ground would get further and the trees would get smaller. Unfortunately, except for the trained crew, no one was allowed on the deck during the initial take-off. Only after the ship reached certain altitude that the other passengers allowed to roam the ship.
But I was sure I could just cover myself in pure mana so I wouldn’t get toppled over or be pressured by the atmospheric change.
Unfortunately, thanks to my ’explosion’ incident, Natha was being extra cautious and protective around me. So of course, he didn’t let me stay outside during the takeoff.
Ugh--he could just go outside with me if he was so worried. I mean--he could fly!
"Be patient, you can go once the ship is stabilized," he said calmly while reading his papers.
"That’s different!"
[Different!]
Natha just chuckled at my aggressive response and continued with his reading. The view outside the window soon changed into clouds, so I just begrudgingly came back to the couch where Natha was seating.
During takeoff, to prevent an accident, all passengers had to stay inside the cabin, which was equipped with stabilizing spell. And as expected of the wealthiest Demon Lord, the interior of the ship was even greater than the exterior. It was luxurious, like the inside of a cruise ship; velvet couch, carved table, magic lamp. The floor was covered in carpet, and the wall in wallpaper. If I didn’t look out the window, I could just pretend I was in a hotel lounge.
Of course, it was only the executive cabin, which was reserved for the Lord and his vassals. The lounge for the other staff was located below, but that didn’t mean it was bad. When I peered down to take a look at it, the interior resembled a cafe that I visited with Zia during the festival; not luxurious, but comfortable and cozy enough to rest after work.
Still, luxurious lounge didn’t make me feel better about staying in.
"I felt cheated," I muttered, leaning back on the couch and crossing my arms while Jade made the same pose in my lap, leaning to my stomach.
[Cheated]
"Life is full of disappointment," Natha replied nonchalantly.
"Oh, I know that too much already, just didn’t think you’d give me one."
Natha folded his newspaper and put it aside, prompting me to think that he might be getting angry at what I said. Ugh--I was rather upset so I constantly whined, but maybe I shouldn’t say that I was disappointed in him?
And then I felt his cold arm around my shoulder, followed by his smooth voice. "I can’t be too perfect, sweetheart, that will be too unfair to the others," he said, with his perfect voice, charming smile, and handsome face, inside his luxurious airship.
"I hate that I can’t refute that," I twisted my lips in a pout, and he kissed it lightly with a smile.
"I’ll let you do that once you mastered the air," he said while brushing stray hair on my face, tucking them behind my ear.
I widened my eyes and shifted to face him. Jade looked up and decided to fly off and perched on Lesta’s shoulder instead, probably looking for candy. Meanwhile, I looked at Natha with a sparkling gaze. "Really?"
"But you’re not allowed to attempt it before you get a teacher."
"Eeh? Why??"
The silver eyes narrowed and he spoke in a firm voice. "Because it’s more dangerous than the water shit you attempted before."
"Ha...haha..." I laughed awkwardly at that. He was still upset about that, huh?
"Or if you want to fly, you can attempt to shapeshift, Young Master," Lesta, who was in the middle of unwrapping a candy for Jade, told me suddenly.
"I can?" I shifted my gaze at the dark-skinned demon, eyes widened. Damn...my knowledge of my own kin was truly sucked.
"Yes. It’s not a shapeshift, however, it’s more like a soul fusion--you inhibit the soul of animals so you can temporarily become them," Lesta explained.
"Oh?"
What Lesta meant was that I should have the ability to merge my soul with certain animals and ’borrow’ their body, like a vessel. But I would need to earn their permission first, like some kind of contract. If I could make one with a flying creature, be it a common bird or a griffin, I could fly as them.
"Again, I won’t let you do that without a teacher," Natha said again, ending my temporary excitement.
"Tsk--spoilsport."
I sunk onto the couch again, feeling like sulking. But that would be too childish, right? But I liked being pampered by Natha too. Hmm...such a dilemma.
"Well, once your familiar reached adulthood, you should be able to go into its consciousness," Lesta poked Jade’s cheek, bulging from the candy. "So you can freely see and feel what the little bird sees and feels, as if it’s your own body."
"Is that true?"
I stared at Jade, who blinked its green eyes repeatedly before our conversation processed in its head. When the little bird finally understood, It jumped down from Lesta’s shoulder and hopped on the table in front of me.
[Master, Jade will become adult fast!]
Oh, looked at my child being all clever and filial. I grabbed the little bird and exclaim energetically. "Yaa--no," but I changed my mind the next second as I looked at the cute colorful bird.
[No?]
"No, I don’t want you to grow too fast..." I stroked the little bird’s head, who was born on my palm.
The little green head tilted and the beady eyes blinked innocently. [Why?]
I squeezed the chubby cheek and told my first child; "Because you’re the cutest now."
[Master like Jade cute?]
I blinked, and pressed my cheek to the little bird’s. "Oh, I’m sure I’ll love you anyway, Jade," even when this kid became full fledge adult, soaring beautifully like the other elemental birds. "But I want you to stay my cute baby for a bit more, yeah?"
Jade tilted its head here and there, staring at my eyes, before nuzzling my cheek and chirping in joy. [Mm...okay! If Master happy!]
"Yaay!"
"You sound like a parent who doesn’t want his child to grow up, Young Master," Arta raised her gaze from the novel she had been reading, grinning as she watched us.
"But that’s what I feel," I rubbed the little bird and sighed. I was excited when Jade grew up and was finally able to follow me, and it was cute that Jade wanted to become an adult fast, like any other child.
But now that I could clearly converse with the little bird, the more I wanted Jade to grow slowly. I wanted Jade to learn about a lot of things, together with me. I wanted Jade to know the joy of being a child, being selfish and spoiled, without having to think about its responsibility as a familiar to protect me.
I looked at the bird and sighed. "Isn’t it weird if your child becomes an adult in just a few months?"
"Well, the brat has remarkable growth for an elemental bird," Natha said, poking Jade’s cheek too, which of course, prompted the little bird to chirp in annoyance.
[Why Nightmare still call Jade that? Nightmare said Jade adult already! Jade have room!]
"That’s true," Lesta tapped his chin in contemplation. "Elemental bird is supposed to be a slow-growing species."
"But that’s because there’s almost none that became a familiar since the time it hatches, right?" Arta offered her thought.
"That might be true," Natha let Jade peck his fingers, laughing at the little bird’s angry face. The silver eyes glanced at me and he added with a smile. "The quality of the Master decides the familiar’s growth after all."
Oh, this flirtatious demon!
Jade stopped the attack on the Demon Lord and turned to look at me. [Because Master always give Jade yummy ball everyday!]
By ’yummy ball’ it meant the energy ball of the purified mana I fed the little bird every day. I only gave Jade a marble worth each time, though, because the elf lady told me I shouldn’t make Jade overate, or the mana circuit wouldn’t have time to get strengthened before expanding. Kind of like making your kid taller but neglecting the strength and density level of the bone.
I wiped the remnant of sticky sugar on Jade’s feather and grinned. "You’re sure it’s not because you ate jelly and candy every day?"
[Jelly and Candy delicious! But Master’s yummy ball more moooore delicious!]
"If you say so," I pinched the chubby cheek and turned to the Demon Lord. "Anyway, where are we going first?"
