The Demon Lord Is An Angel -
Chapter 378: Ballroom Blitz
Chapter 378: Ballroom Blitz
When the man at the back said "Everyone attack!" the ballroom erupted into chaos.
Guests began to flee, the most powerful mages amongst them - the Marquis - standing their ground as they prepared spells to either cover for the guests or attack. The band started leaving, those with the most expensive instruments trying to pack quickly in a surreal state of calm as the conductor waved his wand and created a shield to cover them.
Kir let everyone prepare as he set Kangetsu on his shoulder, his tail curling as he cast a wide shield around himself, Kordia, Lapins, and Kassin.
Spells erupted a moment later, and Kir withstood the blows as he looked down to ask, "Kordia, are you alright?"
"Something’s wrong with Silver... I need to get home... to Mora Lake..."
"Right now you need to get out of here," Kir said. "If I cover you, can you manage it?"
"I can try," Kordia answered.
"We can’t leave!" Lapins said, helping Kordia to her feet. "I can still talk to my parents, convince them-"
"Your parents aren’t the ones in charge, Princess Lapins," Kir said. "But soon... maybe they will be." He looked up at Kassin. "Thank you for looking after Kordia."
Kir created a second shield within the protective dome of his first, bubbling Kordia and Kassin separately before opening his shield and launching them out the window, where a beastkin woman jumped onto her belly to avoid being hit.
"Thank you for not sending me away," Lapins said.
A moment later, a black sword carved through Kir’s shield, only this time it was four measures long and held in the hand of an impossibly giant Jassiel, who was still growing as he declared, "I’m going to make you regret you were ever born!" in a booming voice.
"He looks angry," Kir noted.
"Looks more like a big white cliche to me," Kiryu snarked.
"That’s the angel who killed your messenger," Lapins said.
"I see..." Kir raised a hand, deciding not to waste any time on the angel who was clearly drawing a lot of his power from the elevated behind him. As the angel, in war form, began another strike, Kir raised an open palm and unleashed a nova blast that seared away half of his body and the roof of the castle.
Kir unwound enough energy from the air to keep the spell from detonating on the roof as he melted a path out. Seconds later a torsoless pair of legs collapsed to the ground once the spell was done, the war form growth of the dead angel dissipating in wisps of mana.
Seeing this, half the mages in the room stopped their spells, while the other half put up shields as he turned to look around.
"I have avenged my messenger. There is no need for further bloodshed," he said, fully aware of the escalation he’d just committed to.
Give me a reason to end you... he looked across the room at the ambassador, before spotting two giant Elevated rushing for him, weapons in hand and rage on their faces.
Kir dodged both of their strikes, whipping around and lashing one in the eyes with his tail. In war form, the bony growths along its prehensile tip cut deep into the man’s face. The giant screamed and clutched his face as Kir continued dodging enemy spells as he fought the second Elevated.
Lapins rushed for the high table, slamming to a halt as she slapped her palms onto it.
"Father, listen to me. I know this is strange, but we can negotiate with this demon."
"You have not seen what I have seen. We cannot defy Heaven’s will," he said.
"Look at what they’re doing to our land, father. To our kingdom!" she begged. "What could be worse than this?"
"Annihilation. Without a single soul alive to remember that we ever were..."
He stood from his seat.
"Remain where you are, mortal king," the Ambassador snapped before turning to the guards who had remained nearby. "Seize her!"
The King of Montmorency remained still except to nod to the soldiers who looked at him.
At his nod, one grabbed Lapins by the arm.
"Father, don’t do this!"
The Ambassador, who had returned to watching Kir’s fight with the Elevated, scowled.
"Fools... I’ll do this myself!" He stepped onto the table, growing in size and becoming radiant as he assumed his magiform, a web of magic-wrought substance forming at his back, their blazing white strings reaching out towards Kir, slashing through everyone and everything in the way. His voice, when next he spoke, was deeper. "All Elevated, report to the castle. We are besieged."
Kir was able to put up a large shield in time to save the people behind him, focusing it forward as he walked, but keeping up a single, spinning barrier from behind that deflected away the spells of those still willing to attack him in random directions.
The giant he’d blinded rose, and Kir saw as the man’s eyes finished their regeneration. He paused his steps to ready Kangetsu as the Elevated charged, striking the man on the white limb of strange flesh that covered his arm.
Where Kir cut, the flesh began to corrupt and grow black. The Elevated reacted with pain and horror as he pulled back, panic filling his eyes as the limb began to melt and crumble. Until with a stomach-turning scream, the arm fell away, revealing a limb riddled with holes and bleeding from everywhere the artificial flesh used to fill.
Blotches of dark color appeared beneath the giant’s skin closest to the now-degenerated limb, internal wounds multiplying as Kir stepped away, letting the giant collapse as he bled out.
"I did not see that coming," Kiryu said.
"Any idea what it means?" He felt an inkling of familiarity from his past life’s thoughts as he looked at the parts of the white flesh that were still unharmed.
"I’d need a sample and a proper-fucking lab to find out and I don’t think we’re going to get one of those guys to volunteer willingly."
Seeing this, the other Elevated backed away, unable to fathom how a single cut from Kir’s blade had so injured one of their number. The myriadfolk, seeing this, started to retreat in full, realizing that none of them were of a power to harm Kir through his shields, and all too willing to let Heaven take care of the demon in their midst.
As she struggled against the guards trying to push her away from the fight, Lapins screamed, "Father, please! Father!" Her eyes filled with tears. "Mercy!"
The moment Lapins called for her maid, she appeared, tossing aside the guards like dolls as she extracted Lapins from their grip. The guards who tried to close with her were instantly kicked aside.
"Miss Pryce, stop!" the Queen called out, but Mercy did not stop until she had Lapins safely in hand.
Not until, with a wet, piercing sound, a tendril of light stabbed itself through Mercy’s shoulder. It led back to the hand of the Ambassador, whose scowling face existed just behind the veil of light that enveloped his body. "Traitorous mortal. I strip you of your royalty, Lapins Van Montmorency."
"MERCY!" Lapins shrieked, holding her maid as she pressed a hand onto the wound.
Realizing what had happened, Kir burst his shields out, pushing aside the tendrils in his path as he accelerated into a strike. But the threads caught him, Kangetsu pointing a mere handspan away from the Ambassador’s face.
"Of course, you would come to the rescue of a slave," the Ambassador chuckled. "I have studied you, Ghostheart."
Kir did not waste time struggling against his threads as he willed Kangetsu into assuming rifle form. And at the end of that form, the long, slender pierce of a bayonet stabbed forward, carving out the Ambassador’s eye as Kir surged free of his bonds, breaking them at the same moment the Ambassador stepped backward, screaming.
Kir landed on hands and knees. He fired a shot into the Ambassador which struck the man in the gut and sent him backward off the table.
He stored Kangetsu and then turned to Lapins and Mercy, about to charge forward when he saw the Captain of the King’s Guard barring his path with sword in hand. She looked at him for a long moment before stepping side, with a twitch of a head, she told him "Go."
Kir pounced forward, taking up Lapins and Mercy as he went for the window. As soon as he was clear of the walls, he let his wings out and took flight, angling away as he saw flocks of Elevated closing in on the shattered rooftop.
Some cast spells at him, but he dodged as he gathered mana for a spell of pure acceleration.
"Soundspeed..."
To the Elevated, it must have seemed that one moment he was there and the next he wasn’t. Only a distant boom indicated the direction of his flight, along with the sudden flight of birds from where they had slept in the trees.

In the wake of their departure, the landing Elevated found the Ambassador in a heap. As they helped him to stand, he looked over to the King, who had remained obediently at his place.
"I care not how, but you will destroy the demons and that petulant daughter of yours, or this kingdom of your swill be a stain of blood and ash," the Ambassador held his stomach where he’d been shot, "Am I clear?"
King Montmorency’s fists clenched, but he swallowed his pride as he looked the Ambassador in the eyes. "Clear as night, Lord Angel."
