The Demon Lord Is An Angel
Chapter 328: Teletroubles

Chapter 328: Teletroubles

The group, led by Rena, made good time to Lakebarrow.

The gate guards were too shocked by the strange composition of their group to attack them, which was lucky for them since Amarena was not in a mood to negotiate.

But in the tradition of guards everywhere confronted with a non-violent problem that refused to go away, they acted by making it someone else’s problem. By the time she got to the local Adventurer’s Guild, she’d told their tale to the Guards, the Guard Captain, the Mayor, and a local angelkin mage who was clearly a medium-sized fish in a small pond. Brigit and Darlae rapidly disabused him of any notion he could take either one of them, much less "Rid the world of a demon pretending to be a Valrian."

After sending the angelkin crashing into the doorway of the local pub, the Mayor decided it was best to make the strange group someone else’s problem, and so he let them use the teleporter to get to Montmorency, since it wasn’t potent enough to get them all the way to Norneau.

Three days... How am I supposed to get to Norneau and get Kir to Isegart in four days?

The thought was heavy on her mind as, hours after they arrived, the portal sent them on their way.

They arrived to find a room full of guards, who immediately went on alert as they realized two demons had just arrived.

What are city guards doing in the Adventurer’s Guild? Was all she had time to wonder before the shouts erupted.

"We mean no harm!" Brigit tried to shout as crossbows were aimed and short-swords drawn.

"How did demons come through?" "Someone get the Elevated!" "Don’t move!" "Drop your weapons!" "Are we under attack?!"

Confusion reigned, and finally Amarena drew in a large breath before shouting "SHUT UP!"

Her shout caused someone to lose their nerve and pull the trigger, and a crossbow bolt flew for Bowbo, only to wind up tangled in his steel-wire wool, though the tip did touch skin.

"I am Knight Amarena of the Order Justiciam! We need to get to Norneau immediately," Amarena continued.

Five seconds later, while everyone was still shocked, Bowbo said "Ow." He pulled the bolt free of his wool, dropping the now slightly etched and thoroughly chipped bolt on the ground.

The portal started to glow again, and Brigit shouted "Clear the portal!"

Darlae shoved Bowbo forward and Amarean hurried as behind them a group of chained people of almost all varieties in the Myriad appeared, with a strangely-garbed giant at their front.

What was strange about him was the quality of his clothes, which stood out against the ragged appearance of the slaves behind him, and how his arms were both sheathed in some kind of skin-tight white material, lined with gold at the seams and spanning across his chest.

"Demons!" he hissed as soon as he saw them, assuming a defensive stance and dropping the joinder of the many links as he drew a pair of long knives from the air.

"I have no fight with-"

Amarena barely got the fourth word out when the giant leaped at her, and Amarena took a long step back, drawing her twin shortswords just in time to block with the flats as he closed.

"Elevated, the demon just appeared," a nearby guard said. "She says she’s not here to fight."

"It’s a trick," the giant growled as he continued to push against Amarena.

What is an Elevated? Amarena wondered. By appearance, the man’s silky garb reeked of Heaven, but he was clearly no angel, and she saw less mana in him than most of the guards... and yet the force behind his arms felt at least as strong as her unenhanced strength.

Twisting aside, Amarena whipped him hard with her tail, reinforcing her body with mana to ensure that she cast him away without harming herself.

He stumbled forward and she dodged as something glinted in her peripheral vision, a crossbow bolt flying from across the room. It struck a guard who was armed with a pike, taking him in the shoulder.

The guard who’d shot swore as he frantically tried to reload his crossbow, but Amarena was on him in an instant, cutting through the weapon with hell-wrought steel before she danced out of the way of the Elevated’s return strike.

It had taken her a bit, but she started to find her rhythm as the chaos in the room began to order itself along battle lines.

Under Azalee’s direction, Bowbo thumped a pair of guards into each other before sitting on them heavily - barely held up by the curves of their armor as he pinned them.

Darlae waded into the fray on the other side of the room, bashing aside weapons and herding a trio of guards into closer formations before stepping back to let Brigit blow them out of the room with her wind magic.

As soon as that was done, Brigit turned to the slaves. "I’m taking over this circle. Stay on if you want to go to Norneau." Without waiting for them to reply, she pushed into the center of the formation and studied the focal runes, before slapping her hands into a triangle formation and channeling mana. "Hold out for five minutes!" she shouted at her friends.

None of the slaves moved, they cowered in place. But when a guard jumped onto the platform, trying to attack Brigit, one of the stronger beastkin - a quokkakin woman - stood up and smacked him in the stomach with her chained wrists. Seeing this, two more slaves jumped up to help her, shoving the guard off the platform.

Other guards tried to jump on, and Amarena was able to knock one off but the rest were handled by the slaves, who realized their chance for freedom was at hand.

Two got stabbed for their trouble, but then Bowbo stood off of the guards who had passed out beneath him and barreled into the pair of guards who were trying to fight their way into the center.

"Stop hurt people!" the nothrotian shouted in a deep bellow that went completely at odds with his otherwise slow demeanor.

Amarena smiled at the fight. She remembered Halie’s words to her, after their first long month of training.

"Who has more strength, Amarena? The one who has built themself for a lifetime into the image of the strong, or the one who has turned away from weakness, and starts from nothing?"

"Obviously the former," Amarena had answered, her shoulder covered in blood from a wound.

"You are wrong. It takes more strength to turn nothing into something than to build on what’s already there. And moreso to conquer yourself instead of an enemy. Your weakness. Your fear that you don’t know yourself, is born from this difficulty."

"I am not afraid!"

"You are. You’re afraid you can’t be Leviathan. I will beat that notion out of you."

"I WILL be Leviathan!"

"You will never be your mother. So be Amarena instead... or Rena. I like that name better. Rena Levyethanos..."

Rena would never go by such an archaic pronunciation of the name, but as she danced the swords with her opponent the Elevated, she decided that the time had come to stop hoping for a peaceful exit.

With a surge of strength, she began to batter at the long knives with the flats of her blade, weakening them to the point that one broke. As soon as that happened, the Elevated jumped backward and threw his remaining dagger, piercing Amarena’s shoulder.

"The day is mine, demon!" The elevated grinned as two more Elevated, one with ivory legs and the other whose flesh around the eyes was covered in white and gold, entered.

"What’s going on?" Eyes asked.

"Demons," White Arms replied.

Legs stomped one leg at a time, and the room began to quake as a pair of pulses shook the area.

Amarena slid the blade of her sword under the guard of the dagger and flicked it out of herself. She staggered as the first wave hit, realizing she was now dealing with at least one maven.

It was time to take the gloves off.

With a roar, Amarena shifted into warform. Aerodynamic scutes began to armor her body as her skin thickened and bony growths formed over every surface. Her face grew armored, angular lines and her breastplate burst off of her as she expanded to two and a half measures in height.

The Elevated gawped at her as she finished shifting, before she gave them an up-close view by speeding into them with her mavenry, planting a front snap kick into the maven who had shaken the earth and sending him flying backward into a wall.

The next Elevated was knocked to the ground as she rotated her body into a side kick that sent Eyes out of the door he’d come in through, landing him in the lobby of the Adventurer’s Guild where clerks and adventurers alike were either peeking in or watching with drinks in their hands.

That left Arms. He tried to punch Amarena, and managed to make it felt, only to break his fist against her spiky skin. But instead of bleeding as normal, the wound on his fist quickly closed. With a swift maneuver, Amarena lifted her knee and lodged it in his stomach, tilting forward to pin him to the floor where he fell with arms akimbo.

A double slash downward severed his arms at the shoulders, and she stood to kick the disarmed man into the other room.

"Almost there!" Brigit warned. "Everyone on the platform now!"

Bowbo absently held a guard by the head as he stepped into the circle, and Darlae shoved a pair of guards back before backing up. The slaves watched with grim-faced determination as they kept up their guard.

As the group gathered, Eyes forced himself to a crouch, power surging into his face as he sent out a blast of concentrated mana from his eyes.

Amarena was the only one in place to stop his attack as it went straight for Brigit. She put herself in the path at the last possible moment, bending forward into the magic. It struck her in the chest before she could move her swords into position, and it took every bit of control she could muster to bring her swords into the bulk of the power, deflecting it away before suddenly everything warped and spun and they were no longer in Montmorency.

Amarena turned to find Brigit collapsed, her face strained and her breathing shallow as Darlae cradled her.

The moment Amarena let go of her war form, she looked down to find charred flesh across the top of her chest and shoulders.

It didn’t hurt...

Why didn’t it-?

Everything went black.
