Chapter 303: Prince Eros - Part Two

Chapter 303: Prince Eros - Part Two

The time for words was over.

Kir was finally forced to take another layer off of his self-imposed restrictions as he put Kangetsu into rifle form.

His first act was to throw it into "thunder" mode as he dodged backward, blasting out a cone of pure force that spoiled the flight of the weapons before he swapped to ice.

He was able to freeze two black weapons in midair, and because his gun generated true ice, the weapons did not simply annihilate the spell-formed ice on contact.

But Prince Eros was perfectly willing to sacrifice his weapons as he lashed out with Black Arsenal.

Kir dodged a double-bladed scimitar and barely managed to shoot down a wickedly barbed spear. Yet as the weapons used against him grew fewer, the attacks only grew fiercer as he was backed further away from his objective.

Then the Prince took to the air.

The instant he did, the weapons Kir had frozen ceased to exist before he manifested them around himself.

The message was clear, simple tricks weren’t going to do.

Switching Kangetsu-Dar to its energy beam, Kir let out a shot that traced through the air. The first strike managed to carve through the haft of the spear construct, but it still left the bladed portion intact. As it traced toward him, the Prince quickly moved his sword into place, blocking the beam with actual metal as he whipped out all six of his weapons in arcs that would intercept Kir no matter which way he tried to dodge...

But Kir had expected this.

From his dimensional storage he drew Bri, and with a burst of speed put six steel-jacketed lead bullets through each of the weapons. For a moment they hung in the air as their forms began to discorporate. He was already rushing the Prince as the man stared out in shock at the unexpected loss of his Black Arsenal, Kangetsu shifting from rifle to sword form just as Kir deployed his wings with a burst of speed and-

"Hrlk!"

Before Kir could strike a blow, the Prince was suddenly pulled out the way as a grasping branch tugged him at the waist.

Kir had never intended to strike him, however. And it took only a change of angle to strike at his true target, the device on his back producing the wings of light that were keeping him airborne.

With a sputtering spark, the device died and Kir compounded his strike by kicking the Prince toward the ground, hoping the druid controlling the tree would continue trying to save the Prince, and not pausing to watch as he sped for the cage holding his prize.

Moments later, Kangetsu parted the branches and Kir stowed his sword and reached in. He grabbed the handle of the suitcase...

But it was a trap.

The druid had not been focused on saving the Prince. Thick branches clamped down on Kir’s ankle and arm. Now that he was in contact with the suitcase, however, he was able to dimensionally store it. The sudden addition of mass was more than he expected, but he still had mana available...

The Prince had a few dozen meters to cross before he would reach Kir. Even if his magical shielding would not work much, he had his bone armor to rely on, but knowing what those weapons could do made him not want to touch them at all.

So he used his final option...

He raised his free hand and pointed it towards the tree, generating pure, white light between his fingers.

The Prince, wary, looked up, but he didn’t understand what Kir was threatening. Not until Kir spoke.

"I have two spells, Prince Eros!" He shouted as his opponent was about to resume his approach. "They are equal in power. Kill me, and one will destroy the world tree and everyone on it."

Distaste crossed the Prince’s face as he scowled at Kir. "You’re bluffing."

"Am I?"

From his other hand, Kir unleashed the mirror of the spell he held. A beam of light and hardened radiation blasted through his wooden prison, and against a hill mere tens of kilometers away towards the lake edge, and exploded.

At this distance, the shockwave should have been enough to rip Kir free of his wooden bindings, but more mana poured into them as the druid-shaped trees kept him suspended as the world shook and the shockwaves rocked the air. Kir hoped that the world tree wouldn’t suffer too much damage, but the sight of leaves the size of boats shaking free told him that even shaking the tree would have consequences for those above and below.

The look on the Prince’s face was exactly the same as Rainier’s look of surprise, but with a layer of shock and horror that Kir hoped to never see on his boyfriend.

Those emotions quickly turned to frustrated anger as the Prince lost his composure. "You... absolute evil fucking monster!"

Kir suppressed the urge to flinch.

"I told you, I do not kill without reason. Throw down your sword and tell your druid friend to let me go."

"Tulia..." The shaped trees started to loosen their grip even before the Prince, with a frustrated glare, tossed down his weapon in front of Kir. As soon as it left his grip, the black light disappeared, temporarily revealing the weapon’s inner workings before it closed on itself.

As much as Kir wanted to take it, he suspected that Heaven might have a means of tracking their own arms, especially if it was something as advanced-seeming as a blade designed to end a person’s ability to use mana.

"I wish we could have met under better circumstances." Kir continued to hold his spell as he was let onto the ground.

"The roots of a world tree stretch far, and Heaven farther still. You have proven a threat and now you are known to us. If you ever come within my reach again, I swear on my life, my family, and my gods that I will end you, Ghostheart."

"Tell Rainier I’m sorry... And that I owe him a real adventure."

He began to walk backward, stepping away from the wood growths and the Prince, as he threatened the world tree. Then with a sudden turn and a flap of his wings, he took off, heading for the lake.

Only once he was far, far away did he start to chastise himself for letting the night turn into a complete disaster.

"I should have just blasted the damn bank for a smash and grab..."

"Kid, you did way better than I expected. Unless everything in there was pre-packaged for you, you’d have had minutes to try to move that gold the normal way. Melting it all though... Solid science. Good job." Kiryu said in a surprisingly reassuring tone.

"Here I thought you were going to call me an idiot again."

"I’m a contrarian asshole. You should know this by now." "That stuff between you and Rainbro... peak drama."

"Rainbro?"

"Leave me my puns, philistine. I half expected you to melt the moment you mistook him for your boyfriend. Think Rain would mind if you had a taste of Big Brother?"

"Okay, fuck you. There is no way I’m going to even consider that..." Kir scowled.

"’Oh no he’s hot... I wonder who’s stronger?’"

Kir flushed red. "Those thoughts were personal!"

"Oh Rainbro! The way you swing your sword is so manly-"

"I will smoke a whole fucking pack if you never bring this up again."

The change in Kiryu’s tone was instantaneous. "Bring what up?"

Exactly. "Thank you."

"Not to bring things up again, but what are you going to do with that?"

Kir looked at the Nova Blast he’d been holding the entire time. Now that they were out over the water, things should be relatively safe. He just hoped no one would go marching out to inspect the hill he’d blown up until at least a day passed...

Not long after Ghostheart flew off, a woman made of wood took shape next to the Prince who was left behind.

"We almost had him. He was running low on mana, I felt it. I did not sense much power in his spell... but that explosion... How could someone draw so much power forth with so little mana?"

"I don’t know, Tulia. But that makes him dangerous... If he’d used a spell like that from the start..."

"He did not strike me as the sort to kill innocents... based on what we know of the slaughter at the cemetery. Perhaps the second spell was indeed a bluff."

The Prince stayed silent.

Suddenly, in the distance over the lake, the morning gloom once more gave way to an artificial day as a second explosion rocked the waters. It was far enough away that the shockwave barely mussed his hair, but in its wake, the Prince found his hands shaking in their gauntlets.

"Tulia... can you write a letter for me?" he forced his voice to be as steady as possible.

"A letter?"

"To the embassy. I need to replace the wings they gave me... and I need as much information on Ghostheart as they can muster... and I need to send a message to my brother."
