Chapter 247: Love Game - Set
One month ago, Rainier Eros participated and lost in a race to determine the Prime for the entirety of the Choir of Love.
His team leader, Cassiel Eros, had made the call, deciding to try to save the life of an angel who had fallen out of the sky, while their third teammate, an orcish Elevated named Ozzy was sent for help. They’d succeeded but at a cost.
A fully vested Executioner had arrived on the scene, charging Rain and Cassie with keeping the cause of the angel’s near-death a secret. Neither of them mentioned the fact that Cassie had been able to take the "footage" from the angel’s halocam - a device Rainier understood as recording images and sounds for illusions, though what that had to do with feet was beyond him...
"You fucking tried to kill me! What the fuck I ever do to you?" the little illusion of the demon shouted as for the dozenth-time Rain and Cassie watched from the point of view of the angel. The illusion remained on her until something happened and the halocam wound up on the ground. A grey demoness with four arms, grey skin, and pink hair. One of her upper arms had been wounded by the civilian angel’s clumsy attempt to fire on her with a weapon that Rain was unfamiliar with.
"I’m from Norneau, asshole!" the demoness said off camera, before a wet sound signaled the moment she slashed his throat.
"It was self-defense," Rain said, watching Ozzy’s face. The orcish Elevated - one who had been transubstantiated to as near-angelic as they could be - remained impassive. It was the first time Rain and Cassie were showing their teammate the truth of what had happened, since they’d only discovered the truth after Ozzy had been sent off.
"I’m more worried about how a demon got into the mycelium layer," Cassie said.
"The answer is obviously a perdition gate," Ozzy said. Perdition gates formed between Heaven, Hell, and Ayther when the Eye of Hell, a massive volcano on the Hell-moon, grew active enough to cast away great clouds of ash. Heaven didn’t know why the gates formed then, and the worlds below were even more ignorant, but they had the ability to direct the openings of gates into and out of Heaven thanks to their use of portal rings.
"Yeah, we came up with that too, but as a demon, she shouldn’t be able to survive down there long."
"What if she were a half-demon? I’ve killed such people with multiple arms in the past," Ozzy said. When no one answered, he added. "She’d need to be hunting for food in that case... we could track her. Do what actual Executioners would," he smiled lightly.
"No," Cassie said. "If we do that, then the Order would come down on us. I already decided we’re letting them handle this."
"As you wish, my angel," Ozzy said.
And that... seemed to be that.
It was a conversation that made Rainier wonder just exactly what sort of life Ozzy had led, to make him so bloodthirsty after even half-demons, who didn’t get to pick their heritage... Unless there was a way to create demons the same way Elevated were created, but that was just speculation for him at this point.

The biggest surprise came the day after they showed the video to Ozzy.
The intent of the race had been to secure the top two performers of the Choir of Love, and House Eros had taken the top two positions, with Malzkael in first and Jassiel - Cassie’s hated rival - in second.
A ruling was passed down that, based on their performance and position, Cassiel’s team would be awarded with consideration as Third to finish, which came with a minor prize. What the actual third-place team thought about this was not something he got to know, but according to Cassie they were given the same prize all the same.
The surprise, however, was what had immediately followed.
"Tenebris withdrew from consideration for Prime? What were you thinking?" Cassie challenged Malzkael, her friend and sometimes lover, and also Rain’s.
"Hey, I didn’t want to win, I just didn’t want to lose to Jassiel. You fight him. Bleed him dry," Malz replied. A self-described "dark angel," Malz’s pale skin was accompanied by deep black hair and wings, and a tendency to wear black makeup and black clothes. She also maintained a generally dark demeanor when it came to humor, but had been oddly unwilling to subject Rain to such before they became friends with benefits - as Cassie called it.
She was a complete contrast to Cassiel, who had blonde hair and white wings, and a much larger bust. Cassie favored white clothes that emphasized her curves. She was passionate about proving she wasn’t all just looks, and, to her, the way to do that was by becoming an Executioner.
Malz wanted the same thing, but her goal was to search Ayther for signs of her long-disbanded House, House Memoria, who were once the keepers of history for all of Heaven.
And Rain...
Rain couldn’t help but feel he was steadily losing sight of what he wanted...

A week later, everything was decided.
Because of their withdrawal from consideration, the second and third-placed teams would do battle for the right to become the Choir of Love’s Prime, to represent the Choir in a mysterious expedition that Vinam Victoriam, Son of Heaven and the leader of the Executioners, had planned.
Unfortunately, there were two third-placed teams. But, ever willing to draw out entertainment from a situation, House Ludus agreed to host a battle between the two third-placed teams. Team Roc, Cassiel’s squad, and Green Moon, of House Agape.
A couple of weeks spent training also included researching their opponents. That research told them they would be facing off against Executioner candidates with a year of training on them.
Thus far, Team Roc had largely benefited from raw power, since Rain was highly compatible with the godflesh that had replaced his arm and most of his body, and Cassie had a surprisingly large pool of mana to draw on, and now the ability to assume her magiform, which greatly increased her ability to generate and spend her mana, as well as adding to her capacity even further. Ozzy’s maven ability to generate huge amounts of light was difficult to deal with for most, even if it wasn’t as powerful as the things Rain and Cassie, as mages, could accomplish.
Which brought them to today...
