Chapter 203: Lesson Plan

Chapter 203: Lesson Plan

It took a month after making his arrangements with Moshui - and getting an earful from Lumin about staying within budgets and his "idiotic choice of a fake given name" - for Kir to finish his projects.

He didn’t feel too bad about using Lumin for financing, since she clearly wanted something from him and had yet to make the exact nature of her sheltering him known.

Kiryu’s thoughts on the matter were summed up when he’d said "Watch, it’ll turn out she’s part of a cult awaiting the foretold arrival of the Foretold Star-Born He Of Two Minds About Everything who happens to be us."

"If that’s true, I swear I’m going to live out the rest of my days in the deepest dungeon I can find," Kir had shot back sardonically.

Whatever the truth was, Lumin had bartered her continued financing into Kir providing a lesson plan for what he would teach when the semester started in a month. And when Kir finally finished...

Lumin set down the syllabus Kir had designed - largely with the help of Kiryu, who had memories of teaching classes - and held her forehead.

"So you propose to teach magic... by not teaching magic... and in doing so challenge the underlying principles of the elementals, fundamental affinities, and magic itself..." She leaned back in her chair, staring at Kir, who was still standing next to the knick-knack-covered table where he’d just demonstrated numerous, basic principles.

Kir was standing before her in his wolfkin glamour, separated from her by two tables. The one demonstration that had broken her was the double-slit experiment, demonstrating the wave-particle duality of light.

"Seems about right, Honorable Chancellor," Kiryu said.

"What are youdoing?"

"At least let me pretend I exist sometimes."

"Well, boy?" Lumin asked grumpily when he did not reply right away.

"Oh. Yes, I suppose that is correct," Kir replied.

Lumin looked away for a moment, her face was grumpy but her eyes seemed excited. Kir had been surprised by her change in demeanor towards him after his sheltering, but given everything that happened, it wasn’t a stretch to know that she was juggling a lot and was under a lot of strain.

As if on cue, Terry slid a cup of coffee next to her on a saucer, before quietly blending into the background. As soon as she sipped, Lumin seemed much better.

"I had thought you’d make a decent replacement for one of the mid-level courses. Elemental Dynamics specifically - to replace the Professor your friends killed." She didn’t seem to be torn up about that. "But this goes beyond acceptable theory... Moreso because you seem to have actual evidence." A wicked smirk suddenly crossed her face.

"I’ve got a bad feeling about this," Kiryu said.

"You get bad feelings about everything," Kir sniped back.

"Hasn’t steered me wrong yet. Except for when you first hooked up Rain and Kordia. I thought things would be way rougher than my first constellation."

Lumin resuming her speech interrupted Kir’s dialogue with his older self. "Such extraordinary challenges to basic principles will need extraordinary results, and I think I have just the students for you. If you are up to the challenge," Lumin’s eyes bored into Kir.

"I stand by what I have said. Magic is simply science we do not understand. Understanding the world without magic is how I have gained both efficiency in mana and the ability to precisely cater my spells to situations... before I was sealed, that is."

"I take that as acceptance then?" Lumin asked with a tone of finality.

"Yes, I am up to the challenge," Kir nodded.

"Good. I’ll send you the dossiers on your new students once I’m finished writing them. Assuming they return, you are going to have an interesting semester... Professor Gale - Oh, I meant Professor Nasumi."

"Dossiers?" Kir asked.

"I keep such documents on all the most challenging students... Strictly confidential of course, and yours was quite thick before most of the Academy was stolen. It helps to have documentation when the parents come demanding to know why their progeny was expelled or exploded." She sipped her coffee again. "I will consider your Professorship a failure if the latter occurs and it was within your power to have prevented it. I have lost only two students under my tenure to such folly, and have vowed never to lose a third. Please clear the table before you go."

With that, Kir’s presentation was over, and after scraping everything off the table into his dimensional storage, he departed with a bit of a smile on his face.

"That old hag is trouble" Kiryu noted. "Sure you don’t want to rope her into the constellation? She seems perfect for you."

"First off, gross," Kir said aloud now that he was alone. "Second off, we still don’t know what she wants."

"What who wants?" Stella suddenly popped out from behind the corner, disguised as one of the elven maids.

The fact he hadn’t felt their bond until just then told him she’d somehow figured out how to mask it.

"Lumin," Kir sighed. "How long were you there?"

"Well, after tasting the delicious air of someone learning, I decided to investigate. Lo and behold I find you spilling all sorts of things you didn’t teach me..." she pouted a little.

"I can show you later if you like," Kir said. He’d intended to find Stella after the meeting, so it was fortuitous that she was here.

"Oho... like a date?" she waggled her eyebrows at him. "Can we bring Kordia?"

"Well... I kind of have a surprise for you... Just you. But we can bring Kordia if you like..."

"Nope! I’ll take the alone time." She grinned. "Besides, she and I went on a date last Fireday. Well, it was more of a hangout with Sam, but I managed to get Kordia in the mood after..."

Then why propose to bring her? Kir wondered.

"She’s testing the waters, obviously," Kiryu replied rudely.

Last Fireday, Kir had been holed up in his room with a steel file and his magic, doing last-minute adjustments to his projects. He recalled that Kordia had her own room, but she’d been sleeping with him every night, so they must have gone there.

Stella leaned against Kir, smiling from ear to ear.

"So... what’s in the lesson plan for me?"
