Chapter 13: A Mysterious Necromancer

Agares continued to spur his horse on, leaving forest after forest behind him. Using the smart navigation system powered by Nyx, it would take the man at least a week to ride to the border.

From the digital map, Agares found three small villages along the navigation route. The nearest village was Akaren, a small village with a view of vast fields. It was located behind the forest that Agares was currently exploring.

Time passed quickly without Agares realizing it. He was sure that Jonathan and the others were getting the best training where they were. Their progress would be much faster than Agares, who had to do it alone.

The sun rolled faster, with the light of dusk appearing on the western horizon, signaling that night was about to come. Not wanting to be trapped in the woods alone, Agares sped up his black horse.

In the distance, a bright light could be seen at the edge of the forest. Agares smiled slightly, knowing that he would soon arrive at the village and rest for the night.

He passed through the forest. The first thing he saw was a village in a valley, with vast agricultural areas used for growing corn and wheat. Agares guessed that their main commodities were crops.

Oil lamps began to light up in every house and along the sides of the road, brightening the village in the approaching darkness. Agares became even more interested, he spurred his horse down the hill until he arrived there.

Agares’ arrival did not attract the attention of a few villagers, especially the adults. However, it was clear that the children were coming over to Agares, admiring the man’s appearance.

"Sir! Are you an adventurer?" they asked, children aged 7–10.

Agares smiled. If many of them said so, there was no harm in him admitting that he was an adventurer.

"Yes."

"Wow! I also dream of becoming an adventurer when I grow up."

"I want to be a knight hero. I want to be a Lancer knight!"

"I want to be a priest."

One by one, the children in the village expressed their admiration by sharing their biggest dreams. Agares was happy they had dreams; they had to protect those dreams so they wouldn’t be easily destroyed by the harsh reality of the world.

"Hey, you. Don’t bother the visitors, children," said a middle-aged woman, walking in a simple brown dress with her black hair falling down her right shoulder.

"Yes, ma’am."

Agares stopped his horse. Nyx immediately asked Agares something.

[Do you want me to turn off or stay in standby mode?]

"Standby mode."

[Alright. I’ll keep the smart navigation active and run in the background system]

Nyx’s figure disappeared from Agares’s view, in sync with the disappearance of the smart navigation system panel. Agares dismounted and walked toward the woman.

"I’m an adventurer assigned to the border. I know traveling at night isn’t safe. Can you show me an inn in this village?" Agares asked.

"Sure. There are two inns in this village. Let me take you there."

Agares cleared his throat. He followed the middle-aged woman down the main street of the village. As they walked, she explained a little about Akaren Village, which was famous for supplying produce to the cities of Berdiver and Hurdor.

"You were able to build your economy without relying on the cities. That’s impressive," Agares praised.

"Thank you. We’ve been doing this for a long time, even before the Kingdom of Caer Vireth was formed," she said.

Soon, the woman stopped walking and stood in front of a two-story building, which was quite spacious. It was one of the two inns in the village.

"This is the inn. Would you like to visit the other inn, sir?" asked the woman. Agares shook his head.

"No. This is fine."

"Thank you, ma’am."

"You’re welcome. The people of Akaren Village are always friendly to visitors. If you need anything, you can find me at the tavern over there," explained the woman, who was the owner of the village’s famous tavern.

Agares would consider it. The woman took her leave, and Agares stepped inside to rent a room for one night. The price was reasonable, only one silver coin.

When he arrived at his room, Agares found it spacious enough for him to rest. He locked the door, took off his armor, and put down his sword. He opened the window and watched people enjoying the night.

At first glance, this village seemed like a dream place for some people, with its peaceful ambience, fresh air, friendly villagers, and so on. Agares rather liked this place.

Until one moment, at exactly eight o’clock in the evening, people ran into their houses for no apparent reason. They closed their doors and windows, locking themselves in their rooms for no obvious reason to Agares.

KNOCK!

Agares’s door was knocked on, and the loud voice of the inn’s receptionist could be heard from there. Agares’s attention was diverted.

"Please do not open the window or the curtains. Thank you," she said, confusing Agares.

Agares opened the door and looked at the female receptionist, "What’s happening?"

[WARNING!]

"Threat?"

TUNG ... TUNG ... TUNG

The distinctive sound of wooden clappers echoed throughout the village, not just one, but many. Agares became increasingly suspicious.

"What is actually happening?" asked Agares, curious.

"The Necromancer Knights!" explained the woman.

"Necromancer?"

"He always comes on specific days, one of which is today. They won’t come to people’s houses, only walk on the main road of the village," replied the woman.

"What happens if people don’t go inside their houses?"

"Their souls will be taken. They will turn into undead and threaten the entire village!" she said firmly.

"But you don’t need to worry, as long as you do what I say, you’ll be fine."

Agares fell silent and nodded, closing the door again and walking over to the window. He didn’t pull the curtains or open the window; there was a reason why the villagers behaved this way.

"Nyx!"

[Standby mode deactivated]

[Do you need anything, Master?]

"Explain to me, what is a Necromancer?" Agares asked.

[A Necromancer is a subclass of the main Mage job. They are mages skilled in souls and summoning corpses. Their affinity is infected by the darkness element]

"How does someone become a Necromancer?" Agares asked again.

[There are three possibilities: The mage read a cursed book and lost control of themselves. The mage was cursed by darkness while in the Red Line and Athanor Region. Or the mage is a demon disguised as a human]

"How powerful are they?"

[The average Necromancer is equivalent to a noble-ranked mage. There are some cases where they have reached the king rank]

’Noble Rank Mage? Then I’m no match for him,’ explained Agares.

"All right. Thank you, Nyx. You may return."

[Yes, Master]

[System Stand By]

It was wise of him not to challenge the Necromancer because Agares was aware of his own limitations. He could easily die if he forced himself to challenge that monster.

His best option was to follow the woman’s orders until the necromancer monster left the village. He was sure the monster would move on to the next place and not stay long in Akaren Village.

An hour passed, the second gong sounded, the receptionist returned and informed Agares. She said that the monster had left and would not return. So, he was free to do whatever he wanted.

Agares cleared his throat. Finally, he could rest peacefully with the window open, watching the villagers come out of their homes and begin to liven up the village again.

"There are so many things I don’t know about this world."
