Chapter 52: Chapter 53: Unheard Chapter Name
"New Moon Hall?" Su Xiaoou repeated the place name after hearing Jiang Shu’s words and then remarked, "The apprentices from New Moon Hall also live in our area. There aren’t many apprentices at that hall, but they are all girls and all very pretty. They have high salaries, but their training is also very strict. The day before yesterday, they trained until nearly one in the morning before they could return."
"Oh?" Jiang Shu became interested, "One in the morning?"
"Mm-hmm," Su Xiaoou nodded, "Probably trained past midnight. Their teacher is very skilled; she was a T1 musician in her twenties and is leading ten apprentices!"
"T1? What’s her name?" Jiang Shu continued to ask.
Su Xiaoou thought for a moment, "Shen Xuwan, very ethereal, and a kind person too."
"Oh." Jiang Shu didn’t ask further, but simply looked at the bloodshot eyes and dark circles under hers, "Did you not sleep well yesterday?"
"It was okay, I was..." Su Xiaoou began to explain.
Jiang Shu interrupted her, "Today’s case is related to Deception, so, we can begin."
Su Xiaoou’s gaze sharpened as she looked at him, nodding definitively.
Inside New Moon Hall, eleven o’clock in the morning.
"It’s a Deception case, wait for me."
Wolf received the text from Jiang Shu and immediately sat up straighter.
Just now, he had been arguing with another Police Chief, adamant that this case was related to the Deception Group but unable to produce evidence on the spot, so he endured mockery and ridicule.
This case was tricky, and the hall’s director had deep connections in Seventh District. He was eager to retrieve a music box, so the station director assigned the case to both Police Chief Wolf and Police Chief Joyce, with each leading a separate team to work independently.
Wolf had clear views on this baffling case; he sensed the Deception Group’s handiwork, having already developed some strategies against their techniques through the previous two suspicious cases.
And his strategy was simple—find Jiang Shu.
However, Joyce scoffed at this.
"Yo, what’s the matter? Going to find your little partner again?" Joyce stepped forward, eyeing Wolf who was busy sending a message, "Can’t you grow up a bit? As a Police Chief, you still rely on an outsider to solve cases?"
"Still better than your baseless speculations here," Wolf sneered coldly. Joyce’s opinion was that the theft might have been orchestrated by someone inside New Moon Hall.
Like at the Black Currant Theater, there were always several musicians and singers residing at New Moon Hall, but only three or four lived within the hall itself, and their accommodations were not close to the exhibition hall.
However, neither Wolf’s speculation nor Joyce’s suspicion could address the mystery of the old-fashioned camera.
Kirie had taken the old camera apart, inside and out, for analysis, and her conclusion was that it could not have been tampered with.
That’s what she said.
"Jiang Shu is already here." Now Wolf looked confident, "He also thinks it’s the work of the Deception Group. Just wait."
"He’d better be able to explain this damn camera clearly," Joyce said coldly.
"Jiang Shu?" Kirie, who was skiving off in a corner, perked up her ears and looked in that direction, but not seeing the familiar figure, she felt reassured and continued to scroll through videos.
"Of course," Wolf replied, his gaze sweeping across the hall.
The exhibition hall was situated in a corner of New Moon Hall, featuring modern linear styling, sharp angles, and a vast interior space giving an impression of expansiveness. Its color scheme was muted and refined black, with classic columns providing support.
Inside the exhibition hall, the officers meticulously inspected the scene, employing every trick in the book in the hope of finding clues from the minutest of details.
This was already the third time they had thoroughly searched the area, but evidently, if they hadn’t found anything the first two times, they wouldn’t find anything this time either. However, to make a good impression on the aloof curator watching from the upper floor, they had to continue this futile effort.
Soon after, Wolf received a text message from Jiang Shu.
Jiang Shu: Where are you? I’m at the entrance. Come get me.
Wolf: Okay, wait at the main entrance.
Shortly, Jiang Shu arrived at the exhibition hall, and upon entering, he felt he became the center of attention.
"Uh..." Seeing dozens of gazes coming from all corners, Jiang Shu cleared his throat and straightened his back slightly.
Such gazes were not unfamiliar to him as he had encountered them at commendation ceremonies too. Regardless of his own feelings, he was now the most talked-about rising star in the police force.
Among the officers, he also saw Kirie clad in a white lab coat, who seemed to sense his gaze and unconsciously shrank behind a pillar.
"What’s the matter?" Jiang Shu felt somewhat uneasy with the atmosphere, he nudged Wolf with his elbow and asked in a low voice, "What happened?"
"Oh, nothing much, it’s just that they don’t believe it was the work of the Deception Group, there’s been a bit of a debate," Wolf whispered back.
"You’re Jiang Shu?" Joyce came straight up to him, examining Jiang Shu from top to bottom. He had been away on a business trip during the last commendation ceremony, so he knew of Jiang Shu only by reputation.
"Yes, hello," Jiang Shu nodded.
"Joyce." Joyce extended his hand, gave him a handshake, then asked, "So it was you who thinks it’s the Deception Group?"
"...Yes." Jiang Shu fell silent for a moment before responding.
Joyce narrowed his eyes slightly, then continued, "Do you realize that investigating real cases isn’t child’s play, where you can simply rely on conjecture to identify suspects? You and Wolf really make quite the pair."
Wolf and Jiang Shu exchanged glances, both rendered speechless.
They both knew what Joyce was referring to. Indeed, he was talking about the time Wolf arrested Jiang Shu, which almost got Jiang Shu framed. Fortunately, Wolf was determined enough to right the wrong in time.
Rather than being upset, Jiang Shu actually felt a sense of admiration for Joyce; at least, he, like Wolf, stood by his principles.
"Tell me, what have you observed?" Joyce continued to press, always exuding an aggressive stance as he spoke.
"I..." Jiang Shu looked around, not directly answering Joyce’s question but instead asked, "Where is the surveillance and the glass cabinet that held the music box?"
"This way." Joyce immediately led him to a corner of the exhibition hall.
There was a glass display case, and diagonally above the case, a glass cover faced it.
The glass cover was empty, but Jiang Shu knew that it should have housed an old-fashioned camera, which was now removed. And the glass display case it faced once contained the stolen music box.
Jiang Shu didn’t pay much attention to these two spots, but rather followed the camera’s direction, which led his gaze to the display case and, not far behind it, a window.
Let’s call this window A, and diagonally opposite to A, there was another window, let’s call it B.
"Tablet Spirit, which direction does this window face?" Jiang Shu turned and asked the fluttering creature beside him.
Which direction the window faced? What did that have to do with anything?
For a moment, everyone present looked at him, their eyes showing a mix of confusion, disdain, and hostility.
