Chapter 488: Chapter 267 Wolf is Much Smarter Than Imagined
Seges Building was not merely a standalone skyscraper but a small complex formed by five interconnected buildings.
Each building was positioned at the vertices of a pentagon, with about fifty meters between them, linked by glass corridors; the entire structure formed a pentagon.
At this moment, the morning sunlight shone on Seges Building. The glass corridors and the radiant golden body of the building emitted a splendid sparkle, making the entire complex appear extremely elegant and luxurious.
A low-profile black business car slowly drove towards the building, carrying Jiang Shu and Wolf inside.
At this time, the two were dressed in crisp, expensive suits, each underlined by a basic white shirt, and on their collars were embedded badges in the shape of the Iris family crest.
Jiang Shu wasn’t bothered; he was used to wearing such suits and could comfortably sit in the back seat of the car, content and relaxed like a true noble’s heir.
As for Wolf, being out of his police uniform seemed odd to him, and seemingly aware of this, he kept looking at the suit on his body, occasionally twisting his body as if it were uncomfortable.
"Doesn’t it fit?" Jiang Shu then looked at him and asked, "It shouldn’t, right?"
If the suit didn’t fit, it would be a major flaw.
The heir of an old noble family, it seemed inconceivable he would wear a suit that didn’t fit, especially if it appeared to be expensive.
"No, it’s just a bit uncomfortable, no worries, I’ll manage once we’re inside Seges Building," Wolf shrugged, then flexed his muscles and joints, "This suit was my classmate’s from my police academy days. Our body sizes were similar, so Tang lent it to me."
"But it sounds like you haven’t had much contact with that classmate?" Jiang Shu thought of something Tang Hexun had mentioned before and felt curious.
Wolf recalled for a moment and then continued, "Indeed, we haven’t maintained much contact with most classmates from our police academy cohort; I mainly keep in touch with Tang now."
"Why?" Jiang Shu was taken aback, as relationships formed in the police academy were supposed to be solid.
"Because all the others are dead," said Wolf, the Police Chief, his face normal as he spoke solemnly, "In Lonely City, being a police officer has never been a good career. In the first few years, the attrition rate among new officers is very high."
He slowly continued, "In the early years, attending those classmates’ funerals always left me feeling heavy, though the grief faded after attending several times. Over time, perhaps unconsciously, we reached a consensus and stopped contacting fellow police academy peers."
"Right," Jiang Shu recalled Wolf’s rousing speech when the Fox had stormed the police station.
Putting aside everything else, the officers in Lonely City certainly deserved to be called the most beloved people.
"Distancing oneself is better than learning of their death," Wolf smiled wryly, a bit of self-mockery in his expression, "It’s somewhat like fooling oneself."
"What about Diggs?" Jiang Shu recalled that name, the man from the Iris Family, and Wolf’s old classmate.
"That guy was assigned to Tenth District but quit after a while there, seemingly discontented with the ambiguity in the police station. After that, we lost touch. But he is definitely trustworthy," Wolf pondered and added, "Men, you know, having fought together and been through hard times, those are the strongest bonds."
"So, you’ve both done these?" Jiang Shu asked.
"Of course not," Wolf retorted firmly, "I meant the former, just having fought together."
"Seges Building, we have arrived," announced the vehicle’s automated driving system, and the two men immediately straightened up, waiting for the car to enter the Seges Building complex.
Around Seges Building’s complex, a thin electric net was sprawled, and approximately one hundred meters from the five separate parts of the building, security barriers were in place at each vertex of the pentagon. At this point, the vehicle carrying Wolf and Jiang Shu stopped before one such barrier.
A scanning beam moved vertically across the entire car, and shortly after, a virtual display floating in the air showed the car’s X-ray view, license plate number, and other details.
"No dangerous contraband detected, inspection passed. Car DF9878, irregular user, seeking pre-invited guest list... Vehicle information confirmed, welcome Mr. Jason Diggs," the display showed these words, then the security barrier opened, and the business car automatically drove into the Seges Building complex.
Inside the car, Jiang Shu thoughtfully glanced at the security barrier and the surrounding thin electric net; he also saw a security booth next to the barrier.
However, he saw no one inside the booth, which only had a window on its upper half revealing the interior.
Inside, there was a simple weapons rack, but no signs of normal living essentials like chairs.
Of course, the electric net was not just for decoration, and surely there was more to the seemingly empty security booth.
From the information he had gathered, it wasn’t hard to deduce that the Chairman had a very strong, almost perverse sense of control; certainly, he wouldn’t allow a human security guard to disappear during work hours.
