Chapter 373: Chapter 223 Preparation for Magic

"There are more black-clad law enforcers in the streets today," Fox speared a piece of egg pancake with a puzzled expression, "This should be breakfast, right? Did you just wake up?"

Clearly, although he couldn’t understand exactly what this snack was, he could still tell from the past couple of days’ meals that this was not supposed to be lunch.

At the dining table, Lang Tai, Jiang Shu, and Fox were seated in a triangular formation. The afternoon sun poured through the window, bathing everything in the living room in a golden glow.

It was one o’clock in the afternoon now, and Fox, who had gone out for a stroll early in the morning, came back to the base just in time for the breakfast Jiang Shu had just made and naturally sat next to the dining table.

"Eat it or leave it," Jiang Shu retorted, grabbing a big chopstick-full.

Fox stopped talking and earnestly bit into the egg pancake; he really didn’t want to eat fish anymore.

In this base, whoever controlled the kitchen controlled everything.

Actually, in the middle of the day and after walking all morning, he would have liked a bowl of filling rice, but the taste of this egg pancake was just too good.

The crispy pancake crust, the smooth-textured egg, plus the unique aroma from the grilled sausage—though the egg pancake appeared greasy, there was not a bit of greasiness, instead, it had a fresh taste.

Hmm? Fresh?

As Fox chewed on this richly layered bite of egg pancake, his eyes gradually brightened.

It was the cucumber shreds!

Jiang Shu had added refreshing cucumber shreds!

Suddenly, his appetite surged, and he finished the egg pancake in a few bites. Looking at Lang Tai, he saw that Lang Tai had already swallowed the last bite much earlier.

"What did you mean by ’black-clad law enforcers’ just now?" Jiang Shu recalled what Fox had said and asked with curiosity.

"They represent a third Social Sequence managing organization independent of the Terrorism Control Bureau and the police," Fox explained, "You can check the news, it was just announced this morning. But judging from the comments section, these enforcers have been acting to suppress riots since last night."

He added some key information, "They are under the direct control of Tang and belong to that Management Committee. I estimated that there are nearly three thousand such enforcers throughout the Fifth District. However, what’s strange is that I checked the personnel lists of the Terrorism Control Bureau and the police this morning, and they haven’t been deployed."

"Hmm?" Jiang Shu paused, intrigued by what Fox said next, "You mean..."

"Yes, these law enforcers seem to have appeared out of nowhere; I couldn’t find their origin," Fox continued gravely, his face also showing confusion, "A group of Social Sequence people, well-trained, yet not belonging to the Terrorism Control Bureau or the police. A strange bunch."

Hearing this, Jiang Shu set down the half-eaten egg pancake he was holding. Then he noticed that both Lang Tai and Fox were staring at his half-eaten pancake, so he picked it up again and held it, neither eating nor letting go.

He understood what Fox meant. These black-clad enforcers were from the Social Sequence, and the Social Sequence wasn’t merely nominal.

Their positions had to be displayed on the Character Card; otherwise, they weren’t considered part of the Social Sequence, which was the peculiar part.

Well-trained, with combat ability to suppress riots, yet holding positions within the Social Sequence—it was clear that these positions weren’t created last night, nor were these personnel deployed from the Terrorism Control Bureau or the police.

Likewise, they couldn’t have been trained by the Three Major Groups because their associated Sequence would have been the Combat Sequence. Temporarily changing to the Social Sequence would be very difficult, at least in a short time.

The relationship between the Three Major Groups and the Social Sequence was subtle. Although there was a hierarchical relationship, they needed to maintain a certain distance in the public eye.

These black-clad enforcers seemed to have materialized out of thin air, forming a rapid-response violence squad under Tang’s command, working for him.

"And their equipment is all of a style that has never appeared before, it’s uniform," Fox displayed a video from his wristwatch simulated light screen, "Look at this, the technological content of this equipment seems higher than those from the Terrorism Control Bureau."

The video started playing, and all three of them looked attentively—even Lang Tai watched intently, which was rare.

But considering it carefully, this was normal. Lang Tai was well aware that these people would soon be within his business scope, so understanding in advance was essential.

They wore black full-face masks, tight black uniforms not dissimilar to military wear but equipped with a short cape that rustled when they ran.

However, the purpose of this cape was clearly not just to boost their overall imposing appearance. Jiang Shu clearly saw bullets hitting the cape but not penetrating it; judging from the effects, it seemed the bullets were sliding off the cape.

The unrest in the video referred to approximately a hundred protesters marching, holding banners saying "Rebel against unlawful social experiments," "It’s actually disguised detainment," "Oppose the division of Lonely City," shouting slogans, and stirring the atmosphere among the onlookers, attracting more watchers to join.
