Chapter 436: More of Her Warmth

Chapter 436: More of Her Warmth

The Queen Mother finally dismissed Dani and Abel after a few more discussions about certain things. All the while, Abel’s grip on Dani’s hand remained. Surprisingly, she didn’t say a thing or even throw him a glare, so he smiled in satisfaction as they walked while holding hands.

"I’m sorry," Dani suddenly murmured.

Blinking, Abel turned to face her, his brows furrowed as he asked, "Huh?"

"I didn’t know anything," she mumbled as she stared at the ground. "I even brought up your past."

Abel creased his forehead, but a playful smile soon carved itself onto his lips as he moved his hand to hold her chin and tilt it up so that Dani would face him.

"Hmm... If only I knew you’d be kinder like this," he chuckled. "I should’ve told you the tragic story of my past earlier."

Dani had asked about his family in front of the Queen Mother, and only there did she find out that he was an abandoned baby. She didn’t know the exact details, however, since she also quickly changed the topic.

Dani narrowed her eyes as she ignored his teasing. "Tell me then," she told him. "I want to know your story, Abel..."

His expression changed immediately. This time, he was the one blinking at her because he couldn’t believe what she just said. Was she interested in finding out more about him? It was something that Rosela didn’t even bother to do so. She only knew of him having nightmares at times, but she didn’t even bother asking him about it.

"Come on," she casually said as she grabbed him by the hand and dragged him outside. "Tell me more about yourself, Abel."

Abel quietly followed her while he stared at the hand that Dani was holding onto tightly as if making sure that he wouldn’t get away so easily. She led him to a nearby small pavilion where they could stay. She then asked the servant nearby to get them some snacks before sitting down on a nearby bench.

"Don’t you have work waiting for you?" Abel questioned as she signaled him to sit beside her.

He was actually the one who had a lot of unfinished work waiting for him, and he inwardly cursed at the King who had been slacking off lately telling him to take charge because he was busy making a baby!

"The Queen is being generous," she nonchalantly replied. "She gave me some time off. Niran will accompany her with Zaila in most of her outside activities for now. In the meantime, I have a wedding to take care of."

Abel intently looked at her with suspicion in his eyes. Dani seemed serious with this, and it utterly pleased him.

"We’re already husband and wife in the eyes of all Valcrezians, and I don’t want to look like some wife without proper knowledge of her husband," she scoffed. "Don’t you think I’d look pathetic if that happens?"

He shrugged hearing those last words. Right, she would absolutely look pathetic if she knew nothing about her soon to be husband at all.

"Fine then. First, I’m an abandoned child. Hundred of years ago, a hunter found me inside a basket near the shore. He said I was protected by a spell so no wild animals could get near me, not even him," Abel began as he told her his life story. "Eventually, he called for a sorcerer to break the spell around me since he was getting worried. I kept crying, and he believed I hadn’t eaten a thing for days by that time."

"Oh, so maybe you’re not an abandoned baby," Dani pointed out. "Maybe something happened that forced your parents to leave you. If someone simply abandoned you, they wouldn’t bother putting a protective spell around you."

"I really don’t know, Dani. I tried finding clues to my origins when I grew up since I wanted to find out where I came from and who’s my real family, but there was nothing I could find at all," he explained. "But back to the story, I grew up with Father Bert, the hunter who found me. He took me in as his own son, and we lived in a quiet village quite far from other people since it was up in the mountain of Hydra."

Dani seemed immersed in his narration, so Abel continued by telling her about him and how he met his wife Ella. "Father Bert had this habit of taking in those who lost their family, and Ella was one of them. She came from a village that was attacked by Helion. She escaped, and Father Bert found her in the wilderness trying her best to survive on her own. Ella... she suffered a lot of trauma."

It took Abel a while to get Ella’s trust and let her see the sincerity of his feelings for her. She had suffered sexual abuse before she managed to escape the monstrous Helonians who attacked their village, which made it hard for her to open up. Abel closed his eyes as those tragic memories came back to him like a nightmare that would haunt him in his dreams.

"Ella and I fell in love and we got married. She then became pregnant with our baby..."

From there, he told Dani what happened to their village that got attacked, and took the lives of the people he cared for and loved... The people that became his family... Father Bert, his wife Ella, and their unborn baby.

There was a pause before Abel gritted his teeth as he spoke. "She was carrying our child, and I was so powerless at the time... I failed to protect her." His body trembled. It had been years already, and yet the pain still remained inside him.

"I’m so sorry," she apologized as she pulled him closer so he could lean on her shoulders.

"I’m fine. Many years have already passed, and I’ve already moved on. It’s just that whenever I think of it, I still can’t help but feel disappointed," he shrugged as he whispered, his breath hitting her bare shoulders. "If only I was powerful enough that time. Being a human is so pitiful."

A beat passed while they were together, and Abel moved away from her to look straight into her eyes. "Dani, you..." he seductively whispered. He felt comfort in Dani’s presence, and he wanted more of her warmth.
