Chapter 312: To Wake Up

Chapter 312: To Wake Up

Dahlia sighed as she stood in front of Zoran’s room. She knew she shouldn’t be there, especially since her husband was now a vampire that could wake up any day now, but she just wanted to be with her beloved even if just for a few minutes.

"I really shouldn’t be doing this..."

She let out another sigh once more as she stared up at the door in front of her. To be fair, it had already been a few days since it all happened. While she was permitted to stay for the first few days, the times when Fritz would just tell her to leave were getting more and more often to the point that she even went days without seeing her husband lying there in bed. Well, no more...

Taking in the courage to knock, Dahlia gave the door a few knocks before letting herself in. Surely enough, Fritz was there to look scandalized at her, which was something that she already expected as she held her ground.

"You’re not supposed to be here," Fritz warned her. "Zoran can wake up any moment now, and you’re in danger the moment you’re here once it happens."

"I just want to see my husband for once," she firmly declared, her heart pounding as she did her best to remain resolute. "Is that so hard to give?"

"If it means your safety, yes," Fritz frowned. "Now go before I have to kick you out again."

He then moved to try and intimidate her to leave, only for Dahlia to keep her feet planted on the ground as she stared right into Fritz.

"I’m not leaving," she declared. "Zoran’s my husband, and I have a right to be by his side."

"Dahlia, I’m doing this for your own good," Fritz sighed. "Please, don’t make this harder for the both of us."

Fritz once again moved to try to get her to leave, but Dahlia refused to move. No, she wasn’t going to allow herself to not be by her husband’s side. Not even mortal danger would stop her now.

"Now, you decide to be stubborn," Fritz let out another heavy sigh as he shrugged. "Fine then. Take a seat somewhere, but not near him. Have to at least secure some of your safety."

"Thank you, Lord Fritz."

Smiling gratefully at him, Dahlia took her usual seat facing Zoran’s bed. It was farther than she would’ve wanted, but it would have to do for now.

"Of course, you of all people would be stubborn whenever you really want something," Fritz lightly chuckled as he returned to his own seat. "Some things just never change."

"Well, I have to have some sort of edge over you all," she chuckled back. "I know I’m not strong, so I have to at least know when to stand my ground."

There were just some things that she had to take a stand in. She was an accommodating person, but there were just times when her principles had to come first. That, and maybe she just wanted something so badly that she wouldn’t take no for an answer.

"That’s just you saying you refuse to give up despite common sense," Fritz scoffed. "I still remember you dragging King Nikolai with you to some random corner of the market just to make him buy you a stupid toy."

"I’ll have you know that it’s not just some stupid toy," Dahlia quickly defended with a smirk. "It was a fish bowl."

"For a nonexistent pet fish," Fritz pointed out. "Why did you even want that thing in the first place?"

Dahlia opened her mouth to reply, only for her to close it just as quickly as she drew up a blank in her memories. It had been so long that she actually forgot her reasons for why she wanted a fish bowl back in the day.

"Unfortunately, it would seem that my amnesia isn’t fully healed yet," she coyly responded. "Maybe I’ll remember some other time."

"That’s just not fair," Fritz sighed. "I know you’re faking."

"I’m not," Dahlia lied as naturally as she breathed. "Besides, it’s been far too long. Even if I had all of my memories back, I probably wouldn’t remember it regardless."

Fritz simply rolled his eyes at her as he then moved to check on Zoran again. It was then that her attention returned to her husband, his unmoving form making her heart ache as she patiently waited for her to wake up.

"Say, how soon is soon?" she couldn’t help but ask.

"It could be days. It could be weeks," Fritz shrugged. "For all we know, it could be-"

"Ughh..."

Her eyes widened as she heard a familiar groan from Zoran. To her joy, her husband had his eyes open, his weak groan alerting them of the fact that he had woken up.

"-Or it could be now," Fritz chuckled in surprise. "Still, you should leave now before-"

"AAH!"

Dahlia couldn’t help but shriek as Zoran suddenly moved to pounce at her. She hadn’t even blinked when he moved. He was so fast that before she even knew what was happening, he was already lunging at her as if he was aiming to kill.

"-this happens... Obviously, you’ll just look like food to a hungry vampire," Fritz grumbled as he moved just in time to put himself between the two of them. "Go, Dahlia. I’ll take it from here."

"F-Fritz?" Zoran weakly asked, his fangs still bared as he spoke. "W-What are you doing?"

"Stopping you from doing something stupid," Fritz casually scoffed before turning to Dahlia once more. "Any time now, Dahlia. Don’t worry. He just can’t recognize you right now."

She momentarily froze before she eventually found her bearings. Nodding at Fritz, she shot Zoran one last longing look before quickly making her way out of the room.

Closing the door behind her, she could only sigh as she heard the commotion behind her. While it hurt a bit that Zoran couldn’t even recognize her, Fritz’s words gave her some hope that things would be better if she just waited.

"We’ll be together again soon, Zoran," she whispered to herself with a smile. "We just have to be patient."
