Chapter 310: Nothing to Worry

Dahlia sighed as she looked over her mother’s sleeping form. Despite everything that had happened between them, she couldn’t help but still feel bad for her. There was just too much going on right now, and she didn’t want to lose the remaining family she had left after all this time.

"You can’t leave me, Mother," Dahlia called out to her as she caressed her mother’s cheek. "I know you only did it out of love, and I’m sure you can turn things around."

Looking out the window, Dahlia let out another sigh as she stared up at the moon above. It was almost time for her to leave, unfortunately, with the healers telling her that it wasn’t going to do much even if she stayed for nights on end. And besides, she still had Zoran to look after, even if he was still unconscious.

"I’ll be going then, Mother," she faintly smiled as she stood up. "I hope you wake up soon, and I-"

"D-Dahlia?"

Her eyes went wide as she turned to her mother. To her surprise, her mother had opened her eyes, her lips weakly moving as she addressed her.

"M-Mother?" Dahlia asked. "Y-You’re awake?"

"D-Dahlia... I-it’s really you..." her mother weakly stuttered, a tear running down her cheek as she reached out to her. "Y-You’re here... Despite everything..."

"Yes, Mother," Dahlia nodded, her tears matching her mother’s as she quickly sat back down to talk to her. "I’m here for you. I’m here..."

"Dahlia..."

Mother and daughter stared at one another for a few seconds before the tension between them finally broke. Dahlia practically lunged at her as they both held on to one another, her smile wide as she let her mother cry onto her shoulder.

"I-I’m so sorry, Dahlia," her mother sobbed. "I... I thought I was doing what was best... I was trying to avenge you..."

"It’s alright, Mother. I’m here now," Dahlia reassured her as she stroked her mother’s hair. "You don’t have to do anything anymore."

"I’ve done... so many horrible things..." her mother confessed in between tears. "I... I’ve killed for you... schemed for you... all in the name of justice for your name..."

Dahlia shook her head even as she did her best to ignore her mother’s words. "There there... It doesn’t matter anymore. I’m here now, and that’s all that matters."

She did her best to comfort her mother even as conflicting emotions began welling up in her. Joy and relief were still the most prevalent in her heart, but confusion was starting to bubble up within her as well.

Of course, she wouldn’t ask her mother these questions just yet. At least, not until they were done crying.

Over half an hour passed before Dahlia decided that they were done crying in each other’s arms. Now was the time for questions, and she just hoped that the answers she got would be enough for her.

"Mother, why did you do it?" she asked. "Why did you work with Devon."

Her mother froze before she let out a heavy sigh. "I... I didn’t want to do it at first, but anger and grief blinded me from doing the right thing," she admitted. "I sought out his help to avenge you, but by the time I realized my mistake, it was already too late to back out."

"Too late?" Dahlia questioned.

"He... threatened me," her mother replied. "When I saw that you were alive, he immediately told me that he could still kill you whenever he wanted. That your life was still tied to him and that he could easily take it away just as easily as he revived you."

"Mother..."

Breathing deeply, Dahlia wrapped her arms around her mother once more, squeezing the older woman tightly in reassurance.

"Mother, there’s nothing to worry about anymore," she reassured her. "Devon no longer has control over my body, and there’s nothing more he could do to change that."

"W-What?"

"The Queen saved me by breaking Devon’s grasp on my life," Dahlia explained. "She made sure to give me my life back, free to do whatever I wish."

"S-So... It was all for nothing then," her mother weakly chuckled. "Such a fool I was..."

Dahlia felt her heart broke as she watched her mother’s guilt. There was nothing more she could do for her, unfortunately, but at the very least, she could still be with her and try to help her heal from all of this.

"I’m going to be executed, right?" her mother sighed.

"No! King Nikolai made sure that you’ll get a lighter sentence," Dahlia quickly denied. "You were under Devon’s influence when you did your crimes, so they took into consideration that you were simply a victim manipulated by the Demon King."

Dahlia held her tongue from saying her twin’s name. As much as she knew that Rosela was the one truly at fault, she didn’t want to stress her mother even more than she already was.

"That’s... generous of him," her mother pondered.

"He’s doing his best to accommodate your circumstances," Dahlia smiled. "And he’s also going to make sure that you get the help you need."

Her mother quickly looked up at her, a grateful smile adorning her face as she spoke, "No... I’m sure it was your doing."

"Not at all," Dahlia shook her head. "He’s just that thoughtful. And don’t worry, I’ll be with you every step of the way."

"Dahlia..."

The mother and daughter pair shared one more hug with one another before Dahlia finally had to leave, but not before giving her mother one last hug for good measure before closing the door behind her.

Smiling to herself, Dahlia couldn’t help but feel her hopes soar as she made her way back to the secret chamber where Zoran was being held. It might not be much, but with her mother now awake, maybe her husband was the next in line to get a miracle from the heavens.

Surely, he deserved that much. He had done his due. He deserved his own reward for everything that he had done.
