Chapter 269: Big Brother
Chapter 269: Big Brother
"Undo this ridiculous spell right now!" Raul hissed.
Nikolai scoffed at the ridiculous request. Instead of doing exactly that, he simply held his hand out like a lover and explained himself. "Niran is looking at you right now. Are you sure you want to undo it?" he questioned. "I think it’s best that we disguise ourselves like this so that the two of us can also enjoy the night while stalking them. Spying in your mist form is too troublesome, and they will surely feel your presence like how Laura easily felt it a while ago."
"You understand what they’re talking about then?" Raul asked. "What kind of language is that?"
Nikolai suppressed his laughter as he admired his work of art. Even Raul’s voice sounded like what a real woman would sound like.
"I have a translator," he snorted. "I also don’t know that language."
In truth, it was Nik who was simply translating the conversation for him. Krisha taught the raven about this private language that Mineah created, and it gave him a window into their more secluded conversations. Though it wasn’t like his wife wasn’t willing to teach it to him, but both of them had been so busy doing more important things recently that the time for it never came up.
Back to what they were doing, Raul didn’t respond, but he quickly pulled his hand away from his as soon as he felt Niran’s gaze leave them. They were thankfully sitting just a few tables away from them, and it made staying away from their attention easier than it should’ve.
"Why are you even stalking your wife?" Nikolai asked.
"I have my reasons," Raul vaguely replied. "You?"
"I have my own reasons to do all this as well," Nikolai nonchalantly stated as he started drinking his wine. "I made an enemy with the Rossi Clan, so I need to be extra protective of Mine, especially during these crucial days."
Raul raised an eyebrow as he called for a waiter and asked for a cup of fresh human blood. Purchasing human blood from a donor was legal so long as it was given with proper consent from the human who had undergone all proper checking and procedures according to the laws of Valcrez. Also, not all restaurants had a permit to serve it, and getting that permit wasn’t easy which was why many still do things illegally like Haman did.
"How come you’re not making a move against me?" Raul suddenly opened up.
Nikolai flinched at the sudden question, but he smiled just as quickly and nonchalantly scoffed at him. "Why should I?"
"Let’s not be hypocrites with each other, Nikolai. We both know that you secretly investigated me and found out a lot of things about me..." Raul mockingly pointed out. "So why are you still not making your move against me? Are you just waiting for me to make a mistake so that you can put me down and have me executed on the spot like you did with Haman?"
Nikolai nonchalantly took another sip of his wine. Yes, he was aware of Raul’s movements and the secret organization that was supporting and pushing him to take the throne from him, but him not caring wasn’t the reason why he wasn’t doing anything...
"You are my brother, Raul. My own blood. We may not have the same mother, but we had one father," Nikolai answered. "Your wife trusts that you will do the right thing, so why wouldn’t I when I’m your brother? I just simply choose to trust you, Raul."
His eyes then darted to Mineah, a beautiful smile carving itself onto his face as he scoffed. "My wife begged me to wait and observe you just a bit more, so who am I not to heed her? Niran had supposedly begged her saying she knew you’d choose to do the right thing in the end. I heard she even cry to my wife saying that you’re not a bad person and that she’ll do everything to save you and keep you away from danger," he lengthily stated. "She said she’ll do anything and everything not to lose you."
"And who gave her permission to do that?!" Raul grunted with a frown.
"She’s your wife, dumbass," Nikolai answered with a shrug. "If you want the throne so badly, I would just give it to you, Raul. Just make sure that you’ll be able to handle it. I believe you already know the weight it bears, but not all have the strength to carry such a weight properly without causing damage to others. They should at least be responsible enough for the great power such a position holds..."
"Are you serious, Nikolai?" Raul asked with a frown. "Will you really hand the throne over this easily if I ask you for it?"
Nikolai nodded at him. "I would. I only have one condition though..."
"What is that?" Raul asked.
"Genuinely treat me like your real younger brother," Nikolai stated with a wide grin. "You’re older after all. You don’t think of me as well as you do of our other siblings from our father. Since you’ll no longer be competing with me, that will have to change. You will also have to let me call you Big Brother."
Raul scoffed and mumbled, "Why did he even have to procreate with every woman he saw?"
Nikolai chuckled, "At least we’re fortunate enough not to inherit that attitude from the man."
"I can’t say the same thing for Dave," Raul scorned. "He’s like his second coming with how lecherous he can be."
Nikolai sighed. Dave was the second Prince from their father’s second mistress. It also seemed that he was the only one who was like their father when it came to women. He can also be a bit of a wanderer, which led to many instances of him fathering children far from their home kingdom.
"Ah, that bastard," Nikolai seethed. "What a pain in the ass that one is."
Nikolai and Raul both shared a chuckle thinking about how Dave was on the run and in hiding up until now because of all the women looking for him.
All the while, Nikolai never thought that a time like this would come again. He couldn’t even remember the last time Raul laughed like this in front of him or when the two of them last had a light conversation like this. It was good to hang out with his brother like this, and he was grateful that his older brother wasn’t ignoring him like he used to do.
"I... I don’t have plans for the throne anymore, Nikolai... But I also don’t have plans on declining that secret group," Raul suddenly stated. "I want to know who’s behind it, and this is my perfect chance to do so."
Nikolai’s eyes widened. He didn’t expect that answer, but he was glad that Raul was finally warming up to him. It would seem that his wife was right in that Niran’s arrival in Raul’s life could help his brother overcome his inner demons.
"That could be dangerous," Nikolai remarked. "I would rather have you on the throne than to lose you over that damn secret group..."
