Chapter 164: To Finish the Job
Chapter 164: To Finish the Job
A few days had passed since Mineah had given the bluebell flower containing Ezekiel’s spirit, and she was getting anxious as she waited for her mother or wizard Lurio to give her an update about the current situation. Likewise, Nikolai was clearly also curious as to why she wasn’t going out to try and look for her brother. Not that she wasn’t, but there was just no need for it since they already knew where his body was.
It really was just a massive waiting game now... one that she was reluctant to have to play in the first place.
"What’s taking things so long..." Mineah sighed to herself as she found herself pacing back and forth in her shared tent with Nikolai. It was currently dawn, and thankfully, her husband was busy with other things pertaining to his army’s upkeep. However, that didn’t mean that she should be open with what was bothering her even if she was alone. Keeping secrets from him was still taking a toll on her, and it was getting harder for her to keep quiet about things the more days had passed. "Did something happen? What if-"
"Queen Mineah, Queen Dana is here to see you."
Her ears perked up as the Valcrezian guard currently stationed in her tent suddenly announced her mother’s presence. Almost immediately, she felt her hopes rise even as she did her best to squash them to spare herself the disappointment.
"Let her in," she ordered.
The guard nodded, and Mineah had to stop herself from crossing her arms as she waited for her mother to enter. Sure enough, Dana entered the room with the grace and dignity that was expected of someone of her stature.
"Thank you," her mother smoothly thanked the guard that helped her enter the tent.
"You may leave," Mineah quickly followed.
With a curt nod, the guard left the tent in the exact same way that he came in. A few seconds of silence then followed as both royals seemingly looked for anyone or anything that might be able to eavesdrop on their conversation.
A few more seconds later, both women let their masks down as they relaxed in each other’s presence. In Mineah’s case, she was absolutely worried the moment she saw her mother let out a tired sigh, a sure sign that things had not been going smoother than expected.
"Is there any news, Mother?" she cautiously asked.
"Unfortunately, I only have bad news, my daughter," her mother replied as she slumped to the nearest chair. "I can’t seem to successfully merge Ezekiel’s spirit back into his body."
With their privacy being paramount, Mineah had no choice but to dismiss her shadow maidens after they helped her get ready for the day. That also meant that she was alone in tending to her mother’s needs as well as her own for the moment.
"It’s... How bad is it?" she anxiously asked as she grabbed the nearest chair and sat in front of her mother.
"It’s still possible," her mother quickly reassured her. "It’s just that I need more help than I expected. I’ve come here to ask for your help, dear."
Mineah eagerly nodded. "You know you don’t need to ask for my help, Mother. I’ll help whenever I possibly can," she reassured back, placing a hand on her mother’s hand and squeezing it gently. "Just tell me what I need to do, and I’ll do my best to see it done."
Her mother gave her a grateful smile as she replied, "Thank you, dear. I had hoped that it wouldn’t come to this, but it would seem that I’ll have to give the task to you..."
Mineah blinked as she then watched her mother manifest the bluebell flower back into view. Handing her the flower back, she quickly stored it in herself once more. It was there that she quickly noted that there are now a set of spells currently enveloping Ezekiel’s spirit.
"While I wasn’t able to get the job done, I’ve done my best to make the rest of the process as easy as possible," her mother explained. "Unfortunately, all of those spells wouldn’t be enough if the flower wouldn’t be near enough to his body to truly facilitate the merging process."
"Which is where I come in then," Mineah finished the thought.
"Indeed," her mother answered. "You will have to find an opportunity to try and meet with the dragon itself. It won’t be easy, especially with your husband wanting to see what exactly is happening, but it’ll have to be done."
Mineah gulped as she took in a deep breath. It was already getting harder for her to keep things quiet in front of her husband, but adding this was going to make things harder for her than it should be.
Then again, what other choice did they have? If she wanted to save her brother, then she had to do this. That, she knew.
"Alright," Mineah nodded in determination. "I’ll try and find an opportunity as soon as possible."
"Thank you, dear," her mother sincerely smiled as she moved to give her a tight hug. "I apologize if I can’t do that deed myself, but I’ve done what I can..."
"There’s no need to apologize, Mother," Mineah soothed as she rubbed her mother’s back. "I can do this. You don’t have to worry yourself over this. I’ll make sure to bring Brother back to us. That, I promise."
Mineah took another deep breath even as she did her best to comfort her mother. She knew she really shouldn’t blame her mother for failing, especially since she had done more than enough for their task. Now, it fell to her to finish the job.
She would just have to sneak out sooner or later, preferably while her husband was busy with the war. It felt horrible going behind his back like this, but surely this would be the last time she had to do this.
She just had to bring her brother back. Then, everything would be right with the world again.
