Chapter 159: Piggyback
Chapter 159: Piggyback
"How come you’re not naked when you’re shifting back into your human form?" Mineah suddenly questioned.
For some reason, not seeing his bare back and seeing the Mark of Etenity on it crossed her mind. She lost count of how many times they had been very intimate with each other, and she couldn’t help but feel funny at not being able to see his back like all those other times she did so.
"Seriously, Mine. You’re bringing this up now?" he chuckled and snorted. "I can always easily strip myself if you want to see me naked."
Mineah’s face reddened in embarrassment. Well, it wasn’t like she wanted him to be naked, but it would’ve been a nice bonus...
"Well, it’s not like we rip our clothes like werewolves whenever we shift to our mist form," Nikolai shrugged with a wink. "My clothes are still with me of course, and I’m just quick with getting back into it while shifting back into human form."
She could only nod as she finally felt her feet land on the ground. Looking up, they were near the foot of the mountain just as she had hoped.
"Is this distance from the mountain enough?" Nikolai asked.
"I think it’ll do nicely," Mineah nodded as she looked around. "I’ll need to double-check if his location around this mountain is still the same, but this will do. I’ll also need to use more of your energy, Lai, but..."
She trailed off as she fell into deep thought. She recalled how uncomfortable she was a while ago when they were being attacked by their enemies. That energy... If that was Zoran’s, then he was really strong enough to the point of somehow affecting her body. Also... what if they were able to hunt them down because she used Nikolai’s energy to create the tracking spell for Ezekiel?
Nikolai looked at her intently with furrowed forehead and asked, "What is it, Mine? Tell me."
"You said Zoran is a powerful warlock and that he can sense spells and energy. If so, then it might be very dangerous for us to go through with this," Mineah pointed out, trying her best not to reveal the fact that they were looking for a wandering spirit instead of a human body. "He’ll definitely track us down since it’ll take us some time to search for Ezekiel."
"Zoran is the most powerful warlock I’ve known, Mine, so what you’re worrying about can be true," Nikolai hummed before giving her a wink. "However, your husband is way more powerful than him, so don’t worry."
Mineah could only shake her head at her husband’s antics. "Let’s hurry, Lai," she lightly chuckled as she did her best to focus. "I’ll start casting my spell now, so make sure you’re ready once our enemy locates us."
It was just unfortunate that they still had more pressing concerns to address at the moment. As much as she would love to exchange some banter with her husband, the time was still ticking before their enemies managed to find them.
"Also, apologies in advance, but I’ll be taking some of your energy again," Mineah casually continued.
"It’ll be my pleasure," Nikolai winked at her.
Ignoring her husband’s adorable gesture, Mineah took in a deep breath before starting the chant for the spell she would be using to locate Ezekiel’s spirit. It’ll maybe take some time before it truly locks on to her target, but it wouldn’t be- Ah... She found something.
"Let’s follow this trail," Mineah hummed as she immediately turned to the source of the thing that her spell found. It was a familiar energy, one that she hoped was her brother. "I just hope it’s him this time."
Wordlessly, Nikolai walked beside Mineah as she took the lead. Following the trail her spell gave her, she also took the idle time she currently had to try and think of a good alibi once they finally arrived at their destination with Ezekiel not being present there.
"I’m sure you’ve got this, Mine," her husband reassured her. "You’re one of the best mages I know."
"Even the best make mistakes sometimes," she scoffed even as she focused on the trail in front of her. "Now let me focus. And you need to be prepared. We don’t know when the enemy will attack."
With a committed grunt, Nikolai let out a soft chuckle as he allowed Mineah the silence that she required. Likewise, she did her best to move quickly as they trekked up the mountain. Her footsteps were slow and quiet, as if making sure that they wouldn’t be tracked despite the fact that they were currently alone.
For minutes on end, their journey continued in silence with Mineah in front of her husband. However, that was soon challenged as she began to become out of breath due to all of the hiking she was inadvertently doing.
"Are you alright?" her husband asked.
"I’m fine," she breathed out, her sweat starting to flow from her cheek. "Just... tired, is all..."
To her surprise, she had failed to pace herself against the mountain’s high slopes. They had been going uphill for almost an hour now, and only now did she feel the fatigue starting to creep up her tired legs.
"Do you need a break, Mine?" Nikolai quickly asked.
"N-No," she quickly denied. "We can’t afford to stop now, especially now that we’re so close."
She could feel that she was close too. Unlike last time, the trail she was following felt far more familiar to her. Surely, this was a sign. She was on the right track.
"Let’s just continue," Mineah insisted despite her shallow breath. "We can... follow the tracks here- Hey!"
To her surprise, however, it would seem that Nikolai made a choice for her yet again. In a flash, she felt his wrap around her, gently hefting her up as he positioned her onto his back. By the end of it, he had her on piggyback, his powerful legs keeping them upright as he smirked at him.
"Lead the way, Mine," Nikolai coolly stated as he stared ahead. "I’ll take it from here."
