Chapter 155: Wandering Spirit

Chapter 155: Wandering Spirit

Nikolai no longer dwelled on the matter, but an unsettling feeling lingered inside him. Something seemed off, as he was not someone who would easily pass out, even when drunk.

"I am sorry Lai. Maybe it’s because I’m taking more of your energy than I should," Mineah suddenly said after a terse silence.

’Could that be the reason?’ he wondered. Nikolai was not familiar with the side effects on his body, as it was the first time he had his energy drained like that. However, he didn’t feel weaker at all. He brushed off the negative thoughts and believed that Mineah might be right. After all, he told her she could get the energy she needed directly from him anytime.

"Lai, I think last night I absorbed too much energy from you," Mineah weakly murmured.

Nikolai’s mind wandered to his wife’s passionate actions last night and he couldn’t help but tease, "It’s alright, Mine. You worked hard last night, so I don’t mind if you really sucked me dry."

"Stop teasing me," Mineah muttered with a pout.

Nikolai’s arms tightened around her waist, and he leaned in, gently nuzzling his nose against her neck, sending shivers down her spine. Then pulled back slightly, his eyes locking onto the mark between her neck and left shoulder blades - the same mark he had on his back, the Mark of Eternity.

A mischievous glint appeared in his eyes as he chuckled, making Mineah slightly turn her face and ask, "What’s funny?"

"You haven’t seen my back yet," he whispered, his voice tinged with seduction.

’His back? What’s on it?’ Mineah mused with a frown. Then it dawned on her...

"The Mark of Eternity is on your back?" she blinked at him. She was really curious to know how it looked but so many things had happened that she forgot to ask Nikolai about it. Her face reddened in embarrassment. Nikolai saw her body from head to toe, while she didn’t even get the opportunity to even see his back. She decided right then that the first thing she would do when they returned was to see it.

"How does it look?" she asked, unable to control her curiosity.

Still smiling at her, Nikolai nodded and said, "Don’t worry my love, I will show it to you later. For now, let’s focus on the task at hand. Start meditating, Mine so we have a proper trail to follow."

Mineah clutched her clothes tightly, her emotions suddenly in turmoil when the topic went back to her brother’s search. She couldn’t bear lying to Nikolai, but her mother had begged her last night to keep the truth hidden until Ezekiel could regain control over Vulcan. She agreed since she understood her mother’s plight since her brother was still in Vulcan’s form, the dragon Nikolai had vowed to kill to avenge his father’s death.

It was infuriating for Mineah and yet she thought it would also be for the best.

As the forest loomed closer, she let out a heavy sigh, trying to calm her nerves. Turning to Nikolai, she asked, "Lai, are you ready?"

"Yes, Mine. Rest comfortably on my chest and do what you must. I’m right here with you," Nikolai whispered in her ear.

Doing as he said, Mineah nestled against his chest and closed her eyes. She began chanting the spell, feeling secure in his arms and choosing to keep her eyes shut, allowing herself to focus entirely on the task at hand.

Mineah’s consciousness delved deeper into the vast forest. According to Tarah, only she could distinguish Ezekiel’s spirit.

’How will I recognize his spirit,’ Mineah thought as she started searching. She focused on distinguishing Ezekiel’s spirit among the myriad of colours of energy that surrounded her. Sweat beads formed on her forehead as she concentrated, her heart pounding in her chest.

Then, she noticed a peculiar sight - an unfamiliar, blinking red light hovering in the sky. An inexplicable connection drew her attention to it. ’Could it be him? It must be him,’ she thought.

"Go right. Follow the tracks of the river," she directed, her eyes still closed.

The horse moved accordingly and she could hear the faint sound of a river. Opening her eyes, she turned to her mother, who rode alongside them.

"Mother," she called.

"You saw him?" her mother inquired eagerly.

Mineah nodded hesitantly, realizing what she needed to do next. "I will need more energy..." she weakly confessed.

"Then do it, Mine. I told you to take what you need from me," Nikolai interrupted.

[You don’t understand Lai... Remember I have a curse left inside of me? Getting more energy from you will only make that curse more powerful. I told my mother everything last night, and she, along with Wizard Lurio warned me of this possibility.] Mineah explained.

There was a deafening silence before Nikolai spoke up, "But you need to find your brother. I’m sure nothing negative will happen. The bloody moon is far from coming."

Mineah turned her head to face Nikolai and asked, "How do you know that?"

"Fritz told me when I asked him to check on the Bloody Moon’s arrival. I asked him that as soon as you told me about your curse and its connection to the red moon. He said it won’t come soon this year, so we have enough time. He’s still working on figuring out the exact day of its appearance. But he assured me that it won’t show this year. Also, I’m working on breaking that damn curse so don’t worry too much, Mine. As long as I’m here, I won’t let anything happen to you," Nikolai reassured her.

Mineah took a deep breath and leaned back, finding comfort in Nikolai’s embrace. "I’m sorry Lai," she murmured softly, feeling guilty for burdening him with her troubles.

Nikolai lovingly kissed her shoulder blades and hummed, "Don’t be, Mine because I have never regretted anything that has happened in my life since the day I met you. No matter what the future holds and how grave your curse is, I will never let you go, Mine."

Tears welled up in Mineah’s eyes, and she pressed her lips together, trying to control her emotions. "I love you, Lai," she said firmly. Nikolai kissed the back of her head tenderly and whispered, "I love you more, Mine."
