Chapter 108: Answers (2)
In truth, Nikolai didn’t expect much from that one question. But to his surprise, Rosela had been planning to kill Mineah right from the start. From that one incident back in that inn all the way to the siren attack in the middle of the sea, it just seemed that she was hellbent on making sure that his wife died just so that she could have him all to herself.
"And... And I don’t regret any of it..." Rosela trailed off, her voice sounding defeated.
"So it would seem," Nikolai sighed, more out of disappointment than anger as he questioned her. "Your confession is more than enough to have you sentenced to life imprisoned in the deepest cell in the dungeon. However, there’s more to this. Zoran..."
"Zoran? What about him?" Rosela droned.
"Have you been colluding with him all this time?"
"Yes..."
He blinked at how quickly that answer came out. He didn’t even need to compel her to have his answer. It would seem that she had truly given up now.
"I’ve been working with him for some time now," Rosela let out a hollow chuckle as she began speaking of her own accord. "Do you really think I’d remain undetected for so long just doing things on my own? No... He’s the one covering my tracks for me..."
"We all know that Zoran joined forces with the Kingdom of Helion, Rosela," Nikolai pointed out. "Are you saying that you’re an accomplice to plotting against our kingdom?!"
Nikolai gritted his teeth. So that was why they had a hard time trying to track down those responsible for the previous incidents. They never suspected Rosela.
"Why is he helping you then?" he further asked.
"Because in return, I will help him out once the time for Helion to conquer Valcrez comes," she confessed against her will. "The Helion will have the whole of Valcrez, and he promised me that the Demon King will give you to me with all of your memories wiped away."
Everyone who heard her gasped in disbelief. No one saw it coming.
"Tell us everything right now," Nikolai demanded. "The plans that were already in action against Valcrez, anything incriminating. All of it."
Like clockwork, Rosela stated everything. Meanwhile, Nikolai had already stated a command to check all of the places and the people Rosela mentioned.
"Your Majesty, can we also present another piece of evidence against Lady Rosela?" Dani interrupted. "This is about the case of Dahlia’s death."
Nikolai didn’t expect that, but a while ago, he already promised Mineah that he would let Dani present a piece of evidence against Rosela. Still, he never thought it would be about Dahlia’s death.
Humming, he turned to Mineah who simply gave him a reassuring nod. He then turned to Dani before stating, "Proceed."
Rosela’s face paled as the shadow maiden stepped forward. From there, a vision of her conversation with Mineah played through the clouds that appeared above the relic that Dani was holding.
"That’s not real! They are mages! I’m sure they all fabricated it!" Rosela hysterically defended. "I... I... I will not hurt my twin!"
Nobody believed her. Nikolai stood silently as he stopped himself from moving if only to make for the person that was approaching to compel her.
"Rosela! Tell us the truth right now," the Queen Mother sternly asked. "What did you do to Nikolai and Dahlia!?"
Understandably, Rosela had no choice but to speak the truth.
"I put a dark and powerful spell on Nikolai with the help of a dark sorcerer from Helion that would prevent him from controlling himself while feeding on Dahlia," she droned out before she seemingly came to her senses. "I... I only did that because I love you so much, Nikolai! I wanted you to see me too! I even offered to share you with Dahlia, but she said you wouldn’t agree!!"
"Love? That’s not love, Rosela. Love is patient and kind. It does not envy or boast, and it is not arrogant or rude," the Queen Mother sighed. "It does not insist on its own way. It isn’t irritable or resentful, and It does not rejoice at wrongdoing. Instead, it revels in the truth."
Instead of replying immediately, Rosela let out a vindictive laugh. "You know what? I might as well. If I’m going down, I’m going to tell you everything right now. I’ll make sure Nikolai and your cursed Queen will not become happy!."
"Enjoy that queen while she lasts, Nikolai," Rosela bitterly chuckled. "The moment you feed on her, I’m sure you’ll kill her the same way you killed Dahlia...My love... Did you know that Zoran has all but desecrated the one person you loved?" Rosela continued. "That he... he..."
Nikolai waited with bated breath for her next words. But as seconds passed, Rosela struggled to even breathe as she almost motioned to claw at her own throat. She was gasping for breath, and he immediately knew that something was wrong.
"Rosela?"
"H-He... H-He..."
She was coughing out blood as she began to struggle against her restraints but to no avail. At this point, the audience was starting to feel disturbed as they watched Rosela slowly die in front of them.
Of course, Nikolai didn’t want that to happen. "Mine!"
Calling out the nearest mage in the vicinity which so happened to be his wife, Mineah quickly made her way to Rosela to try and see what the problem was. Unfortunately...
"She’s... That was so fast..." Mineah gasped out. "She’s dead before I can even check her body..."
Nikolai frowned. This wasn’t normal. Clearly, someone wanted Rosela silenced, and they had to find out who it was before they tried something else against their Kingdom.
It would seem that this case wasn’t as closed as he hoped it would be. Thankfully, Rosela’s last words left a few threads that they could follow for now. Zoran was their next lead, and hopefully, he had answers.
"Rosela!"
Rosela’s mother knelt down before her lifeless body, and Mineah quietly sighed as she watched the wailing before her. Somehow, she couldn’t help but feel bad for the older woman.
"This... What happened today is highly unexpected," the Queen Mother murmured.
Seeing the older woman stumble, Mineah was quick to catch her mother-in-law as she staggered to her knees. Quickly, she led her outside the courtroom while Nikolai took over inside.
"I still can’t believe that this happened," the Queen Mother sighed as she held her forehead. "And how Rosela..."
Humming soothingly, Mineah guided her to the nearest bench outside and let her sit to rest. Sitting next to her, she then felt the older woman’s hand squeezing hers in a gentle grip. Mineah turned to look at her, and she smiled as she saw the older woman’s expression.
"Thank you," the Queen Mother said to her with a gentle expression on her face.
