The Creatures That We Are -
Chapter 1249: Cry
Chapter 1249: Cry
Silence enveloped and stunned everyone. Wang Zikai was as shocked as all of them.
Rubbing his tilted face, he said in disbelief, “You...why would you...”
Gao Yang slapped him again.
Wang Zikai’s face twisted further to the side. A cut bled a corner of his mouth.
“Shit!” Liao Liao exclaimed, the scene finally registering in her brain. “Captain’s out of his mind! We’re done! We’re so done!”
The others shared the sentiment. They readied for a fight.
Wang Zikai slowly turned back with blood trickling down his mouth. Rage blazed in his eyes. “Gao Yang, you...dare to hit me? Twice? ...You really have a death wish...”
He grabbed a fistful of Gao Yang’s collar and raised his fist to punch him.
Gao Yang regarded him calmly. “Do you have the balls to kill me, Wang Zikai?”
Two bone stings shot out of Wang Zikai’s fist. “You think I can’t do it? I even killed myself! Who do you think you are?!”
“Then do it,” Gao Yang said.
Wang Zikai didn’t do anything.
Gao Yang scoffed. “Trash. What a loser.”
“You fucking—” Wang Zikai glared at him and aimed the bone stings at his forehead, but couldn’t move an inch further. He growled and shoved Gao Yang away. “Are you sick in the head?! I just woke up, and you’re already getting on my nerves. I was blind to see you as a brother! I’m loyal, Gao Yang, not stupid. If you keep on like this...”
He trailed off, noticing Gao Yang’s reddening eyes. Gao Yang’s gaze was fixed on the dark red scar tissues on Wang Zikai’s right hand. The scar crawled from the back of his hand to his arm like an overlong leech.
That was the result of Wang Zikai extracting one of his bone stings as a gift to Gao Yang.
“Are you sick in the head?” Gao Yang countered.
Wang Zikai blinked at him. “I-I’m not...”
“Did it hurt?”
Wang Zikai finally realized what Gao Yang was asking about. He swung his arm dismissively. “Eh, it didn’t hurt that much. I just lost a night of sleep, haha.”
Gao Yang silently stared at him.
“Haha.” Wang Zikai was embarrassed, but also quite satisfied by his ingenious gift. “That thing can cut metal like butter and inflict a silence debuff. Isn’t that better than the dagger Lithe Snake gave you? That’s the kind of gift befitting the best friend status! That’s a man’s gift. Gao Xinxin couldn’t win...”
His smile dropped like melted butter, and tears welled in his eyes as his face distorted with pain and guilt.
“I’m sorry, Gao Yang... I wasn’t able to protect her...”
“It wasn’t your fault,” Gao Yang said.
“It was! If only I had killed Pride earlier. Then maybe she would live... Hit me, Gao Yang. You can even kill me...”
“I wasn’t able to protect her,” Gao Yang corrected. “And I just hit you.”
Wang Zikai dropped to his knees and broke down in tears.
Gao Yang took off his trench coat to cover up his best friend’s bare torso. He looked up at those waiting outside the barrier, as if asking them if the bawling man was Wang Zikai or Pride.
Zhang Wei burst into tears of joy. “Oh! It’s Brother Kai! It must be Brother Kai!”
“It is that idiot,” Qing Ling agreed. She was still thinking about the birthday cake she hadn’t gotten to eat. “Let’s head back.”
Liao Liao exhaled an audible sigh of relief. “Thank heavens. I get to live for another year.”
Vermilion Bird watched from the side with complicated feelings written on her face. “It’s touching, but also a little gross.”
“That’s closed-minded of you, Sister Xia.” One Stone grinned, her shipper mind awakening. “What touching bromance! I should’ve kept writing.”
“That’s right! You don’t understand true friendship between men!” Zhang Wei’s eyes were reddened, too. He raised his voice and exclaimed at the barrier, “Cry, God Kai! It’s not a crime for men to cry! The strongest god has the right to feel tired!”
Wang Zikai cried even harder.
“Cool.” Heavenly Dog put his thumb up.
“Give them some space.” Adept Horse turned to Gao Yang’s double. “Let’s head back first.”
“Yeah. Come closer.”
The double brought them back with Spatial Migration.
...
“Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you...”
In Liao Liao’s place, Zhang Wei emerged with the cart carrying the cake once more, singing Happy Birthday. The others sang along while clapping.
After that, Liao Liao smirked and said, “The earlier one doesn’t count. This is my real wish!”
She put her hands together and made a wish earnestly, blowing out the candles in one try.
“Yay!”
“Congrats on getting a year older, Liao Liao!”
“You should shut up if you don’t have anything nice to say, Zhang Wei!”
“Do keep in mind that women are always eighteen.”
“Haha, it’s fine. It’s not a bad thing to get a year older. It means I’ve managed to survive for another year.”
“Out of the way.”
“Whoa! Sister Qing, let’s talk this over. Lower the Tang Dao...”
“I’m here to cut the cake.”
“You must be really hungry. Here’s the plastic knife...”
“Doesn’t work as well.”
“Wait, the weapon has cut a lot of things...and creatures. Have you disinfected it?”
“It’s enchanted with Cleansing. It’s clean.”
“No, I can’t accept that...”
A flash of her blade, and the cake was sliced neatly into several portions. The room fell silent.
Liao Liao quickly broke the awkwardness. “Haha, impressive skill, Sister Qing. Come on, get your piece!”
Zhang Wei was more of an enjoyer of a cake fight than the cake itself, but glancing at Qing Ling, his survival instinct talked him out of the idea.
Gao Yang’s double sat quietly away from the crowd, looking bemused.
Qing Ling came over with two pieces of cake and handed one to him.
“Thanks.” Gao Yang accepted the offer.
Qing Ling sat down next to him and started eating with full devotion. She ate some of the cream first. Then she took a bite of the cake. Halfway through, she gave in to her urge and ate the cherry on top of the slice.
Gao Yang chuckled.
Qing Ling glanced at him. “What’s that for?”
