Chapter 641: Chapter 487 Magic Land People’s First Visit to Xinhua Bookstore
The energy surging from the black staff tore open a slit in the ground, with runes spilling out like spring water, enveloping the surrounding area.
Countless characters burst out with a dazzling glow, and then two figures appeared.
The shorter figure was about the height of a normal person, slender, dressed in a long robe.
The taller one was more than twice the height of an average person, draped in a layer of cumbersome armor.
The sound of heavy breathing permeated the air.
Each step the tall figure took left deep footprints on the ground.
The shorter figure paused, then lifted the tip of the staff lightly, and the gushing runes automatically retraced back into the "spring’s eye," eventually closing up the slit in the ground into a sphere.
This sphere drifted and settled on the top of the staff, becoming a part of it, radiating a faint divine light.
"This is it, the Material Plane."
The robust figure asked with a thick, gravelly voice, "Which Material Plane have we arrived in?"
"It’s not clearly recorded in the history of Magic Land; it’s been quite some time since anyone left Magic Land."
Although the Material Plane may not necessarily be a barren place, those nurtured in Magic Land, within reach of divine light, inherently possess a sense of pride—believing they were born superior to creatures from other Material Planes.
"There’s no need to come here if it’s not for those Undead."
The Undead had caused quite an uproar in Magic Land; their combat power wasn’t much to speak of, and their numbers were only around 3,000—by all accounts, not something that would typically draw attention.
It was not until some Undead claimed their numbers had reached tens of millions that the whirlwind to capture the Undead truly began.
Tens of millions of Undead, even if each had only the power of the first ring, constituted a terrifying force. Any Dominus or deity who encountered them could easily be overwhelmed and submerged.
Unlike normal people, the Undead were not afraid of death or sacrifice. If one could command them, they were sure to become an ace force.
With similar thoughts, various powers in Magic Land began to converge—from the north, south, to the west—each seeking ways to dispatch guides to attract the Undead to join their factions.
They advanced along the road and soon spotted a giant structure lying on the horizon, resembling a beetle.
Upon closer inspection, what seemed to be a "giant beetle" was underlain by a myriad of ants.
It was a town.
The pair came with good intentions, quickened their pace to the town’s entrance, and queued for entry.
"Seen any Undead?"
"It doesn’t seem like it."
Their appearances were different from the people on the continent; fortunately, the world was not lacking in Mutants. All sorts of appearances existed.
"What kind of shop is this?" asked the shorter one, glancing at the sign overhead.
It depicted a book and a quill pen.
"A bookshop!"
The voice came from inside.
"Bookshop?"
Books were the most precious repositories of knowledge, something ordinary people might never flip through in their lifetimes. Even in Magic Land, it was common to find those who didn’t read or write yet possessed the power of the second ring.
Yet books were also the cheapest. Knowledge could be transcribed; with one book, a bit of ink, and some time, one could obtain a second, a third, and countless copies.
Even in the far reaches of Stone Beast Fort, there were no bookshops, just the private libraries of Beast Kings, Lords, and Bishops containing such items.
They might occasionally exchange books, but most of the time, they wouldn’t read them even once.
It was beyond their expectations that books, which Magic Land people looked down upon in lowly Material Planes, would exist—let alone bookshops selling them.
"Hava?" the tall one called out to his companion as he entered the shop, instinctively.
His voice was as heavy as a Beast Roar, but no one on the street paid any heed, as if they had become completely accustomed to all manners of sudden events and possibilities.
"Wait here for me. I think books are the fastest way to understand this Material Plane."
There are countless Material Planes, but only three can give birth to the Undead; there must be important information hidden within one.
Hava walked into the bookstore.
Inside, he found only a young girl hugging a book, sound asleep.
Her strength, not even at the first ring, just a Transcendent with a bit of power.
He gently tapped on the table.
"Ah, hello, welcome to Xinhua Bookstore."
The girl abruptly stood up, bowing and greeting in the wrong direction.
"Cough, cough, I’m over here," Hava had to call out to direct her attention.
"My apologies!"
The girl turned and bowed again to Hava, "Welcome to Xinhua Bookstore, the free reading area is upstairs, please take good care of the books."
"Free reading?"
Hava was somewhat surprised, glanced at the stairs, "What if I want to buy?"
"Then bring it over here to pay."
Hava was actually seeing this kind of customer selection and proactive checkout method for the first time; in Magic Land, when shopping, merchants would hide their wares inside horse carriages or behind them—places out of customers’ reach.
Only after one mentioned what they wanted would the merchants fetch the goods.
Watching the girl settle back down in her chair, picking up a book and beginning to nod off, Hava paid extra attention to the book in her hands.
A book titled "Giant War," with a cover illustration of a woman wielding blood confronting a towering, powerful man.
It was a painting style he had never seen before.
