Chapter 517 - 418: My Undead is Too Innocent
Chapter 517: Chapter 418: My Undead is Too Innocent
Lavee left with a heavy heart, believing that Lind was a very upright Lord, and particularly strict with his own people.
Under the brilliance of the Beastmaster, everyone had become accustomed to the law of the jungle. Although they weren’t selfish, the powerful always enjoyed their privileges.
Lavee and Lind’s legion were surely the weaker party, yet Lind could execute a thief without the slightest hesitation. It was no wonder their profession was the so-called but unseen "Knight."
It was an admirable team, and they even treated one with fine wine. The loss of some money and food was nothing.
However, the Undead became restless.
Having overtly "eavesdropped" on the conversation between Lind and Lavee earlier, they learned that Lavee aimed to hunt the Soul Pecking Bird to earn the Title of Sword Saint.
Why does the slaying of a Soul Pecking Bird, not particularly high-level, earn one the Title of "Sword Saint"?
It seemed the new map introduced entirely new gameplay, which scratched at everyone’s curiosity. After all, "Sword Saint" sounded mighty impressive.
Had they not realized that only by following Lind could they steadily follow the main storyline, perhaps some would have already joined Lavee in the hunt.
The main thing holding them back was the hard-earned reputation and War Points from the Rand Kingdom they didn’t want to abandon. All present were Apprentice Knights, one step away from becoming true Noble Knights. To give up their hard-earned status for a side quest was foolhardy.
Playing up to now, the Undead had already discovered that Lind was a growth-type NPC, and his faction was also development-oriented.
In other Newbie Villages, once NPCs appeared, their levels remained fixed, with none ever heard of leveling up.
The most normal progression would have a Newbie Village Chief stay in the Newbie Village, a City Lord in the Main City, and when the Great Rift’s main storyline kicked off, a current server’s "protagonist" would emerge to lead the Undead to attack the Great Rift.
Whenever the storyline needed a change of maps, new NPCs would appear. Although some noticed these NPCs weren’t without backstory, one had to grind for favor again.
Lind was different. His equipment was always amongst the latest, and in the few best-developed Newbie Areas, those Undead who owned Abyss sets were few and far between, nowhere near mass production.
Lotteries, points stores, War Points, and such were unique to the Rand Kingdom and Lind, receiving outrageous favoritism from the developers.
"Sir, shall we not assist Lavee?" Some Undead could not resist asking proactively.
"We have more important missions."
Lind looked at the Undead, wondering when they would realize that against enemies flying in the sky, they could do nothing but take a beating.
Arriving in an unfamiliar place, one should be cautious.
Even Lind wasn’t sure if he could handle it all, though from what he heard from Lavee, someone capable of releasing a fifth circle’s destructive power was counted among the top within the so-called Stone Beast Fort. Still, he felt he should be more measured here.
In the closed beta and open beta versions, the Old Nobility were considered the version’s BOSS, but Lind couldn’t be certain what version the Magic Land would belong to.
What he was sure about was that the Undead were unlikely to visit Magic Land before level 41.
Currently, the Undead were only levels 21-30, which was mid-tier at best.
Lavee, unable to afford beer at the "lower tiers," was still of Heroic Rank and hunted the Soul Pecking Bird alone. His real combat power should be between the second and third circles, likely even higher.
The Undead were inherently weaker than the people of this world. To reach the standard of the third circle, they would undoubtedly need to be level 41 and possess a full set of endgame equipment.
"I’ve got it! We must establish the first real stronghold for our expedition, snatch land, and expand the territories of the Rand Kingdom!" An Undead let their imagination run wild.
Who dared to be bolder than me?!
Lind himself had never considered seizing territory in Magic Land, where Legendary Level individuals were a dime a dozen, including those known as "Dominus."
Their concept of conquering and looting needed some rethinking!
"Are we to save the Magic World, right, Sir?" Another asked.
Of course not, I never thought of saving the Magic World. Did you think I was one of the Three Gods, capable of conjuring a new Ring of Magic to hang in the sky?
"What you are all saying is incorrect. I believe the most important thing now is to interact with the surrounding NPCs. The main quest will surely be with them. Lind’s task as a Newbie Village NPC has already been completed!"
This time Lind saw who was speaking, taking a good long look.
Right, he must put that one in his place, next time when he’s making an example of someone in front of the Magic Land NPCs, he’d kill him first!
The great general doesn’t hold grudges, and what could NPCs possibly have against him?
Lind cleared his throat and said, "It’s difficult for humans to move around in this land, but I learned from Lavee that there’s a place we can go to communicate. Let’s head to the vicinity of Stone Beast Fort and look for a suitable location to establish a new base."
Moving 3,000 people isn’t easy, and to ensure the Undead stay on his side, Lind must make sure the "main storyline" stays with him.
The deeper the interest is bound, the less likely the Undead will betray him for someone else.
If you don’t want to be cuckolded, you have to invest more feelings and benefits.
"Finally, a mission!"
"Move out! Move out!"
"Any teams forming? Any tough mages want in? Warriors, forget it."
"Hey, what’s with the discrimination against warriors?!"
The Undead were buzzing with excitement; a new stronghold meant that a marketplace would open, and possibly new skills and equipment would be updated.
The 3,000 chosen ones all shared common traits: willing to grind, love new equipment, fight new monsters, explore new maps.
Aside from a few casual Undead Lind had specially attended to, like having them live stream to promote him and help him keep up appearances, so they wouldn’t forget him from not being seen for too long, the rest were tireless grinders.
Sleeping for only 16 hours a day wasn’t a struggle; aside from eating and relieving themselves, they barely got out of bed, just grinded straight from there.
They were indispensable for exploring new maps.
After the mission was released, Lind’s attention was no longer on the Undead; they were, after all, originally brought in as deminers.
One thing pleased Lind: many had chosen to live stream, and he was like he had opened up hundreds, maybe thousands of eyes watching through Clairvoyance.
The Undead’s exploration process was quick; they spread out and soon found several local Gathering Places.
Except they were all Red-Name Monsters.
"Now it’s certain, as soon as the Undead come to Magic Land, they’re surrounded by enemies."
This fits the "game setting" well; low-level maps still have Newbie Villages, but high-level maps are filled with enemies. However, Lind preferred another interpretation: the "official" reach hadn’t extended here.
Watching the Undead approach those beast-headed people and Beastmen, Lind thought he must have protected them too well, letting them falsely believe that Red-Name Monsters were negotiable.
My Undead are just too naive.
Indeed, it’s possible to turn Red-Names friendly, but only if Lind defeated them first and then forced them to stay friendly toward the Undead.
The fist is the prerequisite for good communication.
It’s not ruled out that there are NPCs friendly and communicable like Lavee, but Lavee had also mentioned that humans are precious ingredients.
"Hold on, what are they about to do?"
As the "naive" Undead attempted their cheeky maneuvers, Lind finally subdued a Subterranean Tunnel Worm.
The worm possessed the ability to travel through space, an instinct, but it normally couldn’t follow beside Lind, as he ordered it to burrow underground and hide.
But the good news was that this creature seemed to enjoy feasting on the Heart of Calamity too, but after eating, its body slowly became more ferocious, its scales thickened, and it grew in size.
As long as it doesn’t affect its traveling ability and doesn’t betray him, Lind didn’t care; he treated it as if the Subterranean Tunnel Worm had just put on a skin of a desert worm.
Beneath the desert, the giant worm moved, gathering strength and waiting for Lind’s next "ride."
