Chapter 491: Chapter 409 Ashen King_2
Otherwise, there was no explaining why Hatton had fled.
Nanali tried to speak several times. She was torn, uncertain whether her brother’s well-being was more important or if it was her naive love that mattered more. But since no one noticed her expression—all were occupied with thoughts about Hatton—she remained unheard.
The investigation proceeded quickly, the whole family was questioned back and forth. What worried Nanali was the presence of those mysterious and eerie Undead who kept an eye on her and even conspired loudly in her presence.
"I think there’s something wrong with her, she’s hedging her words."
"Should we just confront her directly?"
"I have nine methods to make her confess, nine!"
In the end, Nanali was released because she was a victim’s relative, not a suspect.
After nightfall, Nanali still felt uneasy.
To protect her, the cook had her niece come over to keep Nanali company, a 12-year-old girl named Qiu, who was tall for her age and who dreamt of wielding a great sword and making a name for herself on the battlefield.
But every time, she would get her ears tugged and scolded by the cook.
To reach Qiu’s ears, the cook had to stand on tiptoes.
However, nothing much happened for a time after that, save for a few visitations from the Undead and Soldiers for questioning.
"I wonder how he’s doing," Nanali worried about Hatton.
She hoped to see Hatton again, to hear his explanation. She was unwilling to label Hatton as her brother’s killer.
After nightfall, troubled and restless, Nanali abruptly woke up.
"Who’s there?"
Startled awake on the small bed outside the door, Qiu shot up: "What’s wrong, Nanali?"
"It’s nothing, I might have heard wrong," Nanali said, feeling a powerful intuition that something was downstairs. Hoisting up her skirts and taking up a lantern, she appeared at the top of the stairs.
"I’ll go take a look, you go back to sleep," Nanali said as she carefully descended the stairs.
The dark manor staircase was illuminated by the light, and as she carefully lessened her footsteps on her way down, the flickering light gradually revealed each stair below, casting her shadow into the darkness behind.
Descending the staircase, the first room she approached was a storage space, and hugging the corner along the wall was a furnace, by which she had often sat in front of during cold weather, lost in thought, sometimes even hugging a kitten.
In the room just in front of the first floor’s staircase, there was only a table with various items and a few chairs.
"Nanali?" Qiu peeked out again.
"Don’t worry," Nanali turned and said to her from the top of the stairs.
She carefully navigated around the table and continued forward to a certain room.
Pushing open the door, then, "Ah—!!"
News spread that a mysterious, terrifying monster had slaughtered the entire manor, including the maids and the cook.
Then the Undead and Soldiers came to investigate and discovered that the manor had been invaded by the Abyss, turning the situation grave suddenly.
A large number of the Undead gathered, and even the Flying Dragon was circling overhead the manor.
Clearing the Abyss went swiftly, only everyone was perplexed as to how it could’ve entered here. Miss Tao Lexi had to pay the price; after this incident, she had no choice but to agree to Lind’s construction of a defense tower.
Only the small manor slowly became a haunted house, and whenever people passed through the area, they subconsciously took a detour, no one wanting to get entangled with this tainted and endless chamber of death.
...
Lind stood at the foot of the King of Ashes Mountain.
Looking forward at the active volcano that spewed thick smoke constantly.
Flying Dragon Alex circled above, not expressing joy but voicing complaints to Lind.
It’s too hot!
Though capable of breathing fire and always secreting dripping lava from its boils, Alex was only a Flying Dragon and not a giant dragon. High temperatures and flames would kill it; it preferred slightly cooler climes.
Lind shooed the Flying Dragon away with a wave of his hand, telling it literally to go where it was cooler and stay there.
Rumbling underfoot, the active volcano did not bring any benefits to Lind due to the high temperature; it just made him feel hot. His strength came from Flames, not from the heat.
With a brisk pace, he climbed to the rim of the volcano.
Though called a volcano, it was more like a huge, spewing cauldron. The orange-yellow broth inside churned, and Lind felt a blast of hot air as he peered down, assaulting his face like a heavy slap.
He leaped down, "Snare Catcher’s Flame Wing" springing open behind him to help adjust his direction.
As he grew closer, Lind slipped off his coat, carelessly threw it, and with a chain latched his quiver onto the inner wall of the volcano, pulling it towards himself after finding a steady position.
Lind plunged into the magma.
Hot, painful, but not injurious.
The Furnace Crest allowed the power of Flames to constantly stream into his body.
The Merfolk Crest made him move faster in liquid.
He could swim in lava, even take a deep breath and dive, though he still needed to find the way deeper down.
The boiling broth surged.
The high temperatures kept all living creatures at bay.
Armors forged of fine steel would melt here; even Hundred Refined Steel would likely turn to molten iron in no time.
Bubble and churn of the bubbling magma, yet Lind swam easily within.
If later in battle he had such an active volcano for support, even against Legendary Level bosses, he could stand a trial by force.
Fortunately, there was a foothold at the bottom. Lind crawled out of the lava. His undergarments had long been burnt clean off, only the clinging lava on his skin was reluctant to leave.
